Bali, Indonesia 2018

Hey Everyone! Its been a hectic few weeks criss-crossing continents! In short Bali was... different to say the least. After traveling 7 hours after our final strategic exam Alexis and I were burnt out to say the least. We spent the following day meeting up with Mandy who flew in friday night as well. After spending the day rescuing her from her Air b n b in the ghetto, searching for her lost credit card and relocating her safely we eventually went out to dinner and had yet another incident. Two for one happy hour had us feeling amazing until Alexis death gripped my arm, the buzz in us had her refraining from a massive scream at the sight of an oversized rat crawling across her leg. The poor little bastard tried climbing his way to dinner.
Bali is a country that would have little economic standing if it were not for the abundance of english tourists who flock to the island in hopes of catching a tan and cheap souvenirs. There is a vibrancy in the streets as thoughts can hardly be heard over the continuous roaring pace of the endless sea of motorbikes that crowd the city streets.
Our second day was quite adventurous. Our morning began by sitting in the back  of a truck bed with over a dozen other indian tourists as we prepared to go white water rafting. So it was a typical sunny and muggy day as we trekked through rice paddies towards the river. Scaling the side of the embankment was a thrill in itself as I could probably assume those were the steepest & most  uneven stairs I’ve encountered before, ( Darley rd didn’t ave shit on these bad boys). There the three of us were in nothing but bathing suits and rotten life jackets ( I say rotten since they smelt like they hadn't had a good wash, ever.) watching some balinese men chain smoke cigs and blow up the rafts one handedly, So im thinking “Okay guys lets not panic this will be just fine,” as Mandy gives me a seedy stare and Alexis just shakes her head looking no where in particular.
The rafts were the sketchy kind you’d pick up late night at walmart with your friends and end up just leaving in the box on your garage floor all summer. The rafts  would tread water on impact which happened quite frequently as our guide loved making sure that Alexis and I at the front were entertained and awake. How could we not be awake when he would smash us into the rock walls and waterfalls that entrapped the river waters. It was all in good fun laughing and screaming at the rapids until we had the raft lodged on a rock face and it went to shit. In 30 seconds we were off that raft going as far away from oncoming rafts as possible until Alexis lost her shoe in the rapids and was ran over by another oncoming raft and it was a freaking disaster. That left me with the shakes on high alert hoping to hell we did not do that again or neither of us would fall off again. Miraculously she found that damn $! old navy flipflop.
After climbing the mile back up those stairs and making the trek back to our highbred driver  it was our top priority to relax our bodies and do more casual sightseeing, This was the point in the tip where we ventured to the Monkey sanctuary and had those cheeky mammals climb all over us. Don’t worry they were well taken care of and fed by the local people and they seemed to be living their best lives.
Our sightseeing was the best part about our visit to Bali. I greatly enjoyed day two of our adventures. The amount of things we did feels like several days smashed into one in my mind. To start our morning we regretfully went to turtle island which was an island with endangered sea turtles in captivity that they let tourists improperly handle them for photos. Unbeknowst to us we paid money to go see these protected wildlife and were shocked to see an abundance of chinese tourists flooding the place to take pictures with these beautiful creatures. I was genuinely pained to hold my favorite animal. I enjoyed grading their scales with my fingers in a way that would not disturb their peace in a respectful manor. There were many other animals in cousin snakes, birds, bats and lizards.Keep in mind we took  a shanty boat to and from the island in garage infested ocean waters. We fed exotic fish loaves of bread but a one side floating bits of garbage. It was truly sad to see.
We saw ornate temples, we saw incredible waterfalls and we tasted nearly  15 kinds of unique coffee and tea. the three of us even tried the worlds most expensive coffee- Kopi Luwak, which is coffee brewed from partly digested and defecated beans by a civet, most closely related to a raccoon. This coffee is usually drank black and from personal experience it tastes incredibly bitter as well as sweet. In the US a single cup could sell for 80-100$. If youre wondering if I bought any to take home well I think as a partner at Stewart’s that would be almost insulting.
Bali in short was definitely not my favorite of places i’ve visited. It is a beautiful country thriving and saturated by the tourism it inflicted on itself. With out it the country’s people would not be as stable as they are today but with it comes a great distraction to their heritage and their landscape. Its beautiful black sand beaches once untainted by the white man are now littered with the plastics and litters we brought to them. In the future I hope Balinese people find ways to care for their landscapes and in hopes find a way to turn the damage around.
