I just read that a few Ultras in France demand that football won’t return till supporters can go the stadium again. Like leagues and the FIFA/UEFA plan on playing the rest of the season behind closed doors and the Ultras don’t want that and they demand to stop it till supporters can go to the stadium again. I just don’t think that is possible. People will have free access to stadiums once there’s a vaccine. But It could take (worst case) up to two years till that happens (1/2)
Anonymous said: (2/2) because it takes a while to find a vaccine and then to produce it. And at first essential workers and vulnerable people will be vaccinated first and then the rest of the people and when we have a high rate of people vaccinated there’ll be mass gatherings (like going to stadiums) again. Experts say that’ll take probably till next Spring and it’s not possible to stop football that long. Most teams wouldn’t survive that financially. What’s your opinion,
Hmmm. Difficult discussion. Let me first talk as a supporter: football without fans inside the stadium is absolutely shitty to watch. I mean those PSG fans did their best standing outside the stadium and for the first 5 min the atmosphere was fun with the fireworks etc, but after that it was just as dull and boring as every other game without fans. It just doesn’t have it than. That extra factor which not only makes it fun to watch, but also helps the players you know. A stadium singing and yelling can lift a team up.
Now I’m gonna talk more factual:
1. Vaccines: It indeed takes a while to create a vaccine, but with this crisis there’s a huge urgency so it looks like it will be sooner. It has to be from what it looks like it, because this damn virus will probably here for a while... WHO says 70 vaccines are being developed and 3 of them already in human trials (source), but that will be here within the next year... Sarah Gilbert, professor of vaccinology at Oxford University, said she thinks a vaccine could be ready by September (XXX), and the European Commission said they hoped a vaccine is ready by autumn (but who doesnt right?). But most experts indeed say it won’t be here until the end of the year. .
2. People: Which brings me to the next point: what do the people want. I mean in all honesty. Who cares about football now? I miss it as a sport. Of course, but do I see people actually doing it for our entertainment? Now? With this all happening in the world? Naawh. My worry isn’t if Ajax becomes champion or if Barca will in Spain. A Dutch journalist wrote an interesting column about football today. Saying: Normally football is connecting people. Making them come together no matter what your background, age, gender, origin is. Or as he wrote: ”It’s the most important side issue”, but now people are getting a bit annoyed by all the talk if it should come back or not. Football is losing it’s sympathy and they can only thank themselves for that. Because of the corruption scandals (WC in Qatar), insanely high salaries/transfers and this whole football needs to come back talks aren’t doing the sport any good. While people have sympathy for those cafes and restaurants that hope they can open soon and losing income atm; the opposite goes for football.
.
3. What people seem to agree on - at least here in Holland - is that the social distancing society will be around for a long time. So I indeed do not see fans going to a stadium for a long time, but what about these players? I mean how do you want to play football with a social distancing world maybe? Or with these travel bans? I mean we have flights to get (Dutch in my case) people back from all over the world who are stranded, but those are necessary flights. It not necessary for Liverpool to fly to Madrid and Juve to fly to Lyon. These players also have a family, parents, kids who might live with them at home. What if a player passes it on to a family member? As we know now the Corona virus doesn’t care about age. It might be more elderly that pass, but the young(er) ones go as well. That’s why UEFA needs to be ashamed of themselves for THIS. I was happy with them when they postponed the CL/EL, but this is fcking embarrasing.
I never thought I would say it, but in this case I’m #TEAMFIFA. No match, no competition, no league is worth risking a single human life. “It’s better to wait a little bit longer than to take risks”, said Infantino (XXX). Like FIFA said today there might not be international football until 2021 (XXX) and here is UEFA talking about the CL/EL being restarted again in the summer...
Conclusion: I think international football isn’t even an option now. With or without a public and I don’t see how football in general is possible if we still have a 1.5 meter social distancing rule...
UEFA and FIFA have cashed for years and years and yeaaaaars! They need to take their wallet and start helping clubs that are on the verge or bankruptcy. I’m sure they have some Qatari money to launder...
