Tubbo breathed deeply through his clenched teeth, feeling the anger leave him in an exhausted heap as he slid down the libraries, only the faintest glow of moonlight illuminating the despair written onto his face.
“I just don’t understand- Tommy’s annoying, abrasive, loud, stubborn, but he’s my best friend. He’s just- he’s just Tommy… my best friend, someone who doesn’t know how to not get in trouble and never takes anything laying down.” Tubbo could hear how his voice started to crack, unshed tears causing his throat to ache more and more by the second as the words spilled out of his mouth. “But this? All of this mess? Tommy was never involved! He never did anything! Not Schlatt, not Quackity, none of these bullshit political games- we were just… we were just kids.” All of the air left Tubbo’s lungs as he heaved over his legs hugged tight against his chest, bitter gulps of air trailing off into silence.
Nothing moved as Techno stared down at Tubbo, melancholy creasing the lines around his eyes as Techno slowly walked forward, sliding down the wall beside Tubbo without a word. Words painfully scraped the insides of Tubbo’s throat as a steady warmth pushed itself by Tubbo’s side, his chest constricting further as Tubbo looked up with tear-stained eyes. Stilted silence reigned as neither spoke, twin gazes of sorrow meeting as Techno inched closer, throwing a careful arm over Tubbo’s shoulders as he pulled him close. Tear-stained cheeks hid themselves against Techno’s chest, the stuttering of his breathing calming as the steady, calm beat of Techno’s heart echoed beneath him. Exhaustion draped itself over Tubbo, agony digging itself deeper into Tubbo’s chest as he hugged Techno, muffling his low crying into the soft, loose fabric of Techno’s shirt.
The dim lights of the library surrounded them, moonlight trailing lightly at the tips of their feet as the countless rows of bookshelves closed them into the cover of darkness with a shush. Minutes passed by slowly, the gentle motion of circles rubbing themselves on Tubbo’s back causing him to hug Techno tighter as a calming hum enveloped the two of them. Tubbo lied silently on Techno, refusing to meet his eyes as his sniffles started to calm and tears dried underneath his shaking palms. The gentle, bright hue of pink met Tubbo’s stare as he opened his eyes, dragging his eyes up until he met Techno’s patient gaze.
“And you think that you deserve to be tied up in all of this instead?” Tubbo’s stare flickered down, a deep, overwhelming sadness filling them as he fought to keep his words steady.
“I was the one who got him in this mess, I’m the one who brought attention to him, I’m the one who got excited over working here of all places and told him. I’m the one who led him to this place, and led whoever it was directly to him.” Self-contempt colored Tubbo’s tone, hatred and anger bubbling to the surface as he harshly bit down on the inside of his cheek to stop the tears from trailing down his face once more.
“So, it was your fault that you cared and trusted your best friend?” Tubbo stopped, the throbbing ache loosening minutely from his throat as he glared back to Techno’s thoughtful expression, staring for a moment more before he broke, falling back onto the ancient tiles.
“I should’ve known, I should’ve asked where he was disappearing off to! What kind of best friend am I that I never even worried or thought to ask where he was, who he was with…” Tears dripped onto the ancient tile, the moonlight twisting and reflecting Tubbo’s own anguished expression back to him as he choked out his response. “I should’ve known that something was wrong.” The words seemed to echo throughout the empty library, as a painful, suffocating sensation began to beat at Tubbo’s temples- before he was pulled back to Techno’s side.
“I think you were a kid, a distracted and happy one, one that didn’t have to worry about their best friend disappearing in the middle of the night.” Tubbo gripped Techno’s shirt in his fists, the fabric balling tightly inbetween his white-knuckled hands as Techno forcibly met Tubbo’s tear-streaked face. “Because you trusted that he would come back, and he would’ve, if something wasn’t stopping him from doing so.” Sincerity dripped off Techno’s words, a foreign, but not unwelcomed, warm sensation filling Tubbo at the sight of Techno’s honest, unshakeable expression. The urge to fight, to bite back at Techno’s words, flared for a moment as Tubbo forced himself to breath, hands still clenched in his shirt while leaning away from Techno.
“And that’s why I believe you.”
Tubbo stopped, anger and self-loathing still crackling under his breath as the words settled heavily between the both of them, before the words registered through the agony lacing Tubbo’s thoughts. “You… believe me?” Disbelief colored Tubbo’s words, the traitorous, cruel taste of hope crawling up from the recesses of his chest and filling the aching, painful vulnerability lingering in Tubbo’s wide eyes. “Why?” Desperation whispered softly between the two of them, the urge to ask, to demand, burned the insides of his chest until the word broke out from inbetween his clenched teeth.
Techno smiled softly, a bittersweet, sorrowful thing barely illuminated by the moonlight that hung like a halo around Techno’s frame.
“Because I trust that you didn’t abandon your best friend, as certain as I am in believing that something else is to blame instead.”
