Series 5 Episode 7: Amy's Choice
Hey everyone, today we’re gonna talk about Amy’s Choice as we cross the halfway mark of series 5. Let’s get into it.
So first of all we’ve gotta talk about just how strong of a concept this episode has. This was the one episode from Series 5 I vividly remember watching and loving as a kid. I mean, two worlds, one of them is a dream, one of them is reality and the gang have to decide which one is which whilst this foreboding villain guy taunts em about it? That’s a fantastic recipe for a Doctor Who episode right there, and the episode executes on it very well. Toby Jones was the perfect choice to play The Dream Lord and he really adds to the suspense/mystery of this episode with his performance I loveee it.
This episode also does all of the character development that I wanted from Vampires in Venice. Instead of the whole scuffle between Doc and Rory resulting in like, no sorta resolution of progress in that episode, in Amy’s Choice we get a clear indication of how much Amy loves Rory. She decided that if Rory’s dead in the world, she has to gamble and go for the other because she can’t cope in a world without him. I know it’s cheesy but my god it’s sweet, and it’s the first episode that makes Amy & Rory really believable as a pairing. I also just really enjoy how the settings reflect the dynamics between the characters, having one world representing what The Doctor wants with Amy, and the other representing Rory’s wants. It enables the characters to have fantastic moments, and pushes the narrative of the series as a whole forward.
I think the one thing that bothers me in this episode is Matt Smith’s performance. I find Matt’s performances to be very inconsistent, with some of the best performances ever in the role made by him in some episodes, and then some episodes where I just don’t buy it as much. In this episode there’s a few moments where the dialogue feels kinda clunky/stunted w/ him, and there’s a few scenes (particularly the scenes where The Doc is falling asleep whilst moving) where his performance becomes a *bit* too goofy for me. Gives me classic dw vibes whenever you’d have the extended scenes with those Doctors/actors stumbling around after being hit. I don’t know if it’s bad per se, like for the most part he’s still The Doctor and nailing it there were just a few moments where the rhythm felt off with his performance for me. If that makes any sense?
TL:DR/Overview: Great premise, great character work, it’s a fantastic episode. Whilst something feels off about Matt Smith’s performance in this episode, everything else is just done so well. I’m gonna put it in S tier, and I’m again giving a deserving shoutout to Toby Jones as the Dream Lord, I’m not gonna lie I would love to see what a hypothetical Toby Jones master would look like that sounds awesome 👀. Series 5 is looking very hit or miss so far, we’ll see if the Silurian two-parter can hit tomorrow.
