Trading The Option - The market either declined, which raised the premium or the market rose and you are just looking to get out before losing all of your premium. Conclusion BasicsTrading Options carries nice leverage because you do not have to buy or short the stock itself, which requires more capital. They carry 100% risk of premiums invested. There is an expiration time frame to take action after you buy options. Trading Options should be done slowly and with stocks you are familiar with. I hope you learned some of the basics of options buy side trading, investing and how to trade them. Look for more of our articles. American Investment Training. Why Size Matters - Especially In Options TradingIn my previous article I wrote about how style drifting could kill your trading account. It's a must read in my opinion. Today, I want to talk to you about another major blunder new (and even experienced) investors make. Like style drifting, it can do a lot of damage to one's account. What am I referring to?Investors can put themselves at a terrible disadvantage simply by sizing their positions incorrectly. This usually occurs when their position is too big relative to the risk and account size. The key to getting the relative sizing correctly is understanding the risks associated with the position. Let me walk you through a likely trade scenario an investor not familiar with relative sizing might make. For example, let's say on 7/31/14 an investor looking to take advantage of a short term move. sold call spreads in UVXY. UVXY is the PROSHARES Ultra VIX Short-Term Futures ETF. It attempts to replicate, net of expenses, twice the return of the S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures index for a single day. On 7/31/14, UVXY was trading at $31. 70. Let's assume on that day an option investor sold 20 $36/$39 call spreads (expiring 8/8/14).
advanced options trading course Tennessee if UVXY gapped up on the following Monday, it would probably get past the amount they were willing to lose.
In anticipation, traders start buying and selling options in the contract month the announcement will be made. Of course, option volatility rises due to the uncertainty of the outcome. Again, you almost have to treat these like binary trades as well. Even if you think you've got time on your options. anything could happen. For example, they could come out and say that will not have their results ready and change the announcement date to something else. Those who bought option premium will see the value of those options lose a lot of value because of the volatility crush.
trading earnings with options Tennessee One great takeaway from reading books is that you can also learn more about the hidden trading factors you don't see everyday like investor psychology or market psychology.
00. 73. The value of the spread closed at $0. 93. Although the investor was looking at a paper loss of $720, they decided to get out of the position. if UVXY gapped up on the following Monday, it would probably get past the amount they were willing to lose. (Note: UVXY is a product I wouldn't personally sell call spreads on. I'll explain my reason a little bit later. )Now, when I typically short premium via structured trades. I size the trade to represent my max risk and play the odds. For example, if I were to put on this trade and was risking $1,000 on the trade. I'd sell 4 call spreads which would have a max risk of $972. I'm not a proponent of stopping out of short premium trades. As you know, most options expire worthless. However, there are cases where outliers occur and short premium trades go ITM and end up being losers. By sizing my trades according to the amount I'm willing to lose. I'm not really stressed about any large overnight moves or morning gaps.
options trading course in maryland Tennessee If you're over-leveraged or sized incorrectly.
Since selling a stock short is extremely risky, since you have to cover that short and your buyback price of that stock is unknown. Bet THAT wrong and you are in a world of trouble. However, put options leave the risk to the cost of the option itself - the premium. Learning or getting information on how to trade Puts starts with the above and looking at an example of a put contract. Using the same contract as above, our anticipation of the market is completely different. 1 PKT Dec 40 Put with a premium of $500. If the stock declines, the trader has a right to sell the stock at 40, regardless of how low the market goes. You are bearish when you buy or are long put options. Learning to trade puts or understanding them starts with market direction and what you have paid for the option. Any basic strategy you take on this contract must be done by December. Options normally expire toward the end of the month.
the weekly options trading newsletter Tennessee as outlined in my previous article.
on 8/1/14 the 30-day option volatility was 158. 63%. on 8/4/14 the 30-day option volatility went down to 132. 1%. on 8/5/14 the 30-day option volatility was back to 152. 1%Pretty wild. right?(These kind of swings along with the wide bid/ask spreads and the upside risk are the reasons why I don't like selling call spreads in this ETF)The 52 week high in option volatility in UVXY is 185. 18%. Again, the investor in our example was probably thinking now is a good level to short some premium. However, they wasted all there bullets without any room for error. Going all in or full size was not the right play in this situation. You see, it's important to have some kind of perspective and understanding of the stock or ETF you're trading. The type of move we saw in UVXY is not uncommon relative to how it trades. The option investor should have been aware of this and sized smaller. Putting volatility levels into context is essential if you're going to be using options to express investment ideas. Examine the time frame? In my previous article , I share a story of one of my trades, where I had to close out a position because I was leaving to go to a dentist appointment. I bought back some short puts for $0. 10 expiring in an hour.

Are there any key technical levels? Some questions to ask yourself: Is a key moving average that is broken, support or resistance levels violated, a spike below or above the VWAP or whatever technical indicator you're looking at. Now, I know some option investors who don't use price charts or technical analysis; some are very successful. However, even if you don't. understand that there are other traders who do (with serious money behind them). just knowing what levels they might be getting in and out of could be some useful information. It’s Not You, Dummy, It’s Capitalism
We all need to work less.
That’s the conclusion I’ve drawn after 3 weeks on a 30 hour schedule. It’s too soon to say the change has been truly life-altering, but I can promise you it’s made a difference.
To clarify, my situation is a rather remarkable one-
I work in the government, so I’m union protected. That, in and of itself, is of great importance and a source of security unavailable to most people in 2020.
Due to a pending budget crisis, we were given the opportunity to request reduced hours on a voluntary basis. We could retain our vacation accrual and insurance benefits. We’d simply work less.
I live in a dual-income household where the second income is considerably higher than my own. As such, my cost-of-living needs are offset accordingly.
Basically, all of the above had to be true for this option to be viable for me. Stars-aligning kind of stuff. It is absolutely an economic privilege that I recognize many do not have access to.
My student loan payments are delayed until January, so that’s a huge expense temporarily delayed that played a major factor in my choice.
So, goes without saying that yes, I am remarkably lucky. I’m not out of touch with the fact that many, many folks could not make this work. Luckily, that’s the point of this post! In a better world, everyone SHOULD have the chance to make this work.
With that out of the way, I would like to repeat, we all need to work less. Even if it’s just ten hours less, it would make all the difference.
The first week of my 30 hour/3 day work schedule was marked mostly by sleep and inactivity, my body simply recovering from the absolute insanity of 2020, which for me had been marked by constant workplace turmoil, incredibly strict job requirements, relentless electronic monitoring and the looming threat of budget-induced layoffs. Couple this with the stress of a self-induced diet and a tight spending budget as I pursued paying off all my credit cards, and it’s little wonder that I came face to face with a true, no-holds-barred meltdown in early August.
I mean, sure, I had lost weight and considerably paid down my debts, but I was also drinking more than I had at any time since maybe college. My impulse spending had returned with a vengeance as I obsessively sought out new thrills. I was almost exclusively plugged into my video games and anime. I wasn’t creating, I was barely socializing, and my off time was just enough for me to catch up on sleep and occasionally work out before going straight back to the 40 hour, 4 day slog.
There was no epiphany moment in August where I realized I was having a meltdown and needed a change. I wouldn’t recognize my meltdown for what it was until weeks after the fact.
But when my department offered the reduced schedule option, something deep within me stirred- and I grabbed that opportunity as quick as I could. It was a visceral reaction. I knew that emotionally, spiritually, physically, I was in a world of hurt- and I knew why. It wouldn’t take a new therapist or hours of meditation to confirm- it was my job. I hated my job, just as surely as I had hated the job that came before it and the job before that- and it was killing me.
But economic necessity kept me from doing anything about it. I needed insurance. I needed the security of a paycheck. I needed to eat, to have a gym membership, to fill my car with gas, etc.
So when my workplace said “hey, we’ll let you keep all your benefits, just work less and take a smaller check”, I realized that hey...this was a pretty fair compromise. So I went for it.
The results? Well. See for yourself-
I sleep more, and with regularity, and without as many vicious all-nighters. I don’t spend time freaking out about how little control I have over my time, or how the sooner I go to sleep, the sooner I’ll just wake up and start the next terrible day of work all over again.
My workouts go longer and to greater effect, and I have more energy for them.
I’m actually writing on a daily basis again.
My homespace is the cleanest it has ever been, in spite of 3 pets and an ongoing pest infestation. I’m even doing laundry regularly. It’s wild.
I’m reading, meditating and watching media with intention, because my focus is slowly repairing itself now that I’m not in front of a screen 10-14 hours a day.
I have more time to invest in and socialize with the people around me.
I drink less. A lot less. And it’s become incrementally easier to continue making wise and kind consumption choices for my body- choices that will surely prolong my life, if I can keep them up.
I’ve been able to take up the side-projects and learning endeavors I had been putting off or had written off as pipe-dreams, ‘cuz I now have the emotional surplus to take them on.
And the list goes on- so many small things- cooking for myself regularly, not forgetting to brush my teeth, putting on new clothes every day- stuff that like, SHOULD be normal stuff, but just wasn’t, for me, is finally happening, ‘cuz I finally feel like I have the energy for it.
What I’ve learned so far is that when you aren’t killing yourself 40 hours a week, you might end up having more resources available to you than you did before.
I thought I’d be feeling a tight belt after my first check- but if anything, I’m shocked at how much more economic freedom I feel. Gone are the stress-induced impulses to spend on  items I don’t need. If anything, having less in the bank account has helped me look on the raw amount of STUFF I have accrued in my adult life and appreciate it more deeply- as well as part with a good deal of it.-
Not unlike my video game backlog, I’ve learned I have no small number of personal backlogs that have built up over the years. Books, movies, crafts, legos, electronics, workout gear- you name it, I probably have a collection built up for it- created in a moment of Capitalism-induced stress where the act of building that backlog was mistaken as accomplishment of following through on its end-objective.
These backlog collections were the product of excess- things purchased just ‘cuz. Things purchased to make the 40 hour death march feel Worth It. I mean, who wants to take a paycheck and see nothing for it beyond a few debt balances marginally reduce? When you have a pinball table sitting in your living room, that feels like a far more tangible reward for your work and stress.
But now that the work schedule stress is at least marginally reduced, the root cause of these growing backlogs having been addressed, I don’t feel like I need that pinball table. And as the days press on and my energy continues to return piece by piece, I realize that the several hundred bucks I traded in were more than worth what I’ve gained back in personal health. And as a result, I have more left over in the bank- turns out when I feel good, I don’t feel the need to constantly bleed cash or obsess over full online shipping carts.
I just straight up don’t miss the money.
I mean, yes, obviously, less income can and does suck. Telling people I willingly took a lighter schedule often meets with a mix of reactions ranging from confusion to concern to outright disdain and judgement. If a sudden expense comes up- say, a medical emergency, I’d have to revisit this arrangement. And there’s always a chance I could get laid off, ‘cuz Covid is ravaging our economy, so having little cushion for that possibility is a source of stress and concern.
But otherwise, my case is a remarkable one. I was able to look at my current check, guess how much I’d be losing by reducing my hours, and feel pretty good about what I was left with. Most people can’t make that math work, and I empathize with that.
But my point here isn’t to marvel over how lucky I am. My point here is that when you realize that it is POSSIBLE to retain essential benefits like health insurance without the proverbial gun of a 40 hour work week pointed at your head, you start to realize just how different American society could be- for the better.
Here are just a few things that could so easily be different if American society was even a little willing to bend just a tiny bit.
We don’t need to work 40 hours a week. It’s an imaginary and stagnant number that means literally nothing. We sure as hell don’t need to be on the job 5 days either.
Similarly, we don’t NEED most of the benefits employers dangle in front of us to keep ups for 40+ hours a week- benefits that could easily be transferred over to pure pay/financial compensation.
I’d go so far as to say we don’t even really NEED the extra money, either, but for everyone to require less money is to assume that A) our entire economic ecosystem could change overnight (unlikely) and B) Most businesses can’t afford to pay us more for less raw productivity (patently false in most cases).
We don’t need to use half of our earned income for a place to live. We don’t even need to use a third of it or a quarter.
Good food doesn’t have to be as expensive as it is, and a gym membership/fitness assistance doesn’t have to be a luxury available only to those who can pay for it.
Medical insurance doesn’t need to be conditional- and it sure as fuck shouldn’t be tied to employment. Oh, and “elective” medical care and therapy should absolutely be freely available.
Cars/transportation/clothing/utilities/essential personal items (clothes/furniture/internet/etc) do not have to be paywalled behind requisite job/personal security- the same requisite security that often requires these very same things before you can obtain said security.
It should go without saying that you should not need job experience to gain job experience. Generally speaking, the people making twice as much as you are no different from you save for a few essential personal contacts that got them where they are. You could do what they do if given the proper time and training. In a perfect world, we could freely apply for anything, and it would be illegal to list years of experience or a degree as a job requirement.
We do not need to let employers monopolize our lives- no matter what incentives they might dangle in front of us. Our jobs should be just that- jobs. A place we go to create something for someone else in exchange for compensation. They should not be our purpose. They should not take up the majority of our time. They should not cost us our physical or emotional well-being.
We need to stop pretending that our employers are interested in anything beyond productivity for the sake of productivity.
And then we need to prioritize ourselves accordingly.
The list can go on and on.
So many of these things really aren’t a reach. They truly aren’t. Other countries do them, and have met with success. But whether by stubbornness or greed or simple laziness, American society just can’t or won’t consider these asks.
I’ll just end with this-
I’m on the other side of the typical employer-employee agreement, where I’m retaining my most important benefits but simply working and earning less. It’s a realization of like, half a bullet-point from my “how society can get better” list, but even this mere half-realization is a life-changer.
It’s not the right choice for everyone. And certainly, there are people who would even prefer to work and earn more.
But our entire society shouldn’t be contingent on that being the ONLY option.
Everyone should have the choice to do what I’m doing right now, if they want.
But for that to happen, our society needs to fundamentally change.
I believe if our society changes and extends even the most meager of employment and benefit flexibility to its citizens, we would all, every last one of us, be happier and more fulfilled.
If you’re working 40+ hours a week grinding out a living and are beating yourself up ‘cuz you don’t have time or energy to keep your home clean, work out, eat healthy, do your laundry, invest in social opportunities, skill building, or even undertake personal investments like a car or an updated wardrobe-
It’s not a You issue.
It’s a Capitalism issue.
And the only way it’ll be fixed is everyone can be afforded the same opportunity as I have been.

HP's small Envy x360 13 is more premium than its price

HP's small Envy x360 13 is more premium than its price
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Josh Goldman/CNET
If I was still commuting regularly on a bus or train, the HP Envy x360 13 two-in-one laptop would be on my shortlist. It would also be a top consideration if I were shopping for an older high school or college student. It’s small, stylish and light at just less than 3 pounds (1.3 kg). Battery life is long despite the size. And the AMD Ryzen 5-4500U processor delivered performance beyond that of pricier Intel chips. Add in fast Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.0 and, essentially, you’re getting a speedy little two-in-one that’s ready for working from home or remote learning but is also ready for your backpack.
Like
Smaller and higher-quality than you’d normally get for its price
Solid performance, battery life for its size
Don’t Like
Memory soldered on
Glossy display makes outside use difficult
The Envy x360 normally starts at $700 and the configuration I tested is $800 (£800, AU$2,000). (For those looking to spend even less, check out our list of best laptops under $500.) The price is more than reasonable for what you get, but the biggest issue I have with the Envy x360 13 is its availability.
A $1,000 version comes in and out of stock and the same is true of my configuration, the Envy x360 13-ay0010nr. You can get a better configuration from Costco right now with twice the storage and a faster processor for $900, although it’s been as low as $750 from the warehouse club. The 15.6-inch version has more availability, so if you don’t mind a larger display, it starts at $700.
HP Envy x360 13 (2020, 13-inch)
Price as reviewed $800 Display size/resolution 13.3-inch, 1,920×1,080-pixel IPS touchscreen Processor 2.3GHz AMD Ryzen 5-4500U Memory 8GB DDR4 (soldered) Graphics 512MB Radeon Storage 256GB PCIe NVME SSD Ports 2x USB-A (3.1 Gen 1), 1x USB-C (3.1 Gen 2), MicroSD Networking Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax), Bluetooth 5.0 Operating system Microsoft Windows Home Weight 2.9 pounds (1.3 kg)
Streamlined and simple
HP was aiming for a minimalist design with the Envy x360 and I’d say it hit the mark. Made from aluminum, the outside is clean and subtle. The lid lifts easily and the display doesn’t have much of a bezel around it at all, including the bottom, which is significantly smaller than the 2019 model. That reduction shifts the keyboard and touchpad up with the keyboard going nearly edge to edge.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Envy x360’s keyboard is spacious, but it results in a smaller touchpad.
Josh Goldman/CNET
It’s a comfortable keyboard with a two-level backlight. The key legends are easy to read and the function keys include the usual hotkeys for volume and screen brightness along with options to instantly mute your mic and block the webcam for privacy. A responsive fingerprint reader is nearly hidden in the keyboard, sitting between the right Alt key and left arrow key.
The glossy display is definitely a highlight here. It has excellent color and contrast and, at 400 nits, it’s bright. Not quite bright enough to see past reflections outside on a sunny day, but otherwise it’s great. The reduced bezels do make it more comfortable to use on your arm as a tablet and the display supports simultaneous pen and touch input and works with MPP 2.0 pens.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
A headset jack and USB-A and USB-C ports are on the left side. On the right is the power input, another USB-A port and a MicroSD card slot. It can be charged through the USB-C port as well.
Josh Goldman/CNET
AMD’s got what it takes
No doubt about it, AMD’s newest mobile processors outperform pricier Intel CPUs. The Ryzen 5-4500U can keep pace with an Intel Core i7-1065G7 and it isn’t even the fastest AMD chip available for this two-in-one. There isn’t a huge gap in performance between the 4500U and higher-end 4700U, so if only one or the other is available you’ll be in good shape regardless. Aside from the processor, though, you might want to go with a configuration with 16GB of memory. The memory is soldered on and that means models with 8GB of memory can’t be upgraded.
The Envy x360’s battery lasted a fairly long time. On our streaming video test, it hit 10 hours. In general use — streaming music, browsing, writing and basic photo editing — it was closer to 7 hours. However, it does charge quickly, getting up to 50% in 30 minutes.
The HP Envy x360 13 is an excellent small two-in-one with a higher-end design than you’d typically get at this price — assuming you can find one in stock. Factor in the solid AMD performance and battery life and it’s an easy recommendation.

The trim 13.3-inch display gives you room to write and sketch in tablet mode without being too big.

As COVID-19 Reveals the Cracks in the Yoga Industry, Could a Universal Teachers’ Union Help Reshape Our Community?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This story is a component of a series covering the longer term of yoga during and after the coronavirus pandemic. Here, we take a glance at the progress the yoga unionization effort has made. Read more about the the precise challenges facing the industry in our second story: the longer term of Yoga: The Change we'd like . For yoga teachers round the world, their worst case career scenario arrived mid-March, when the coronavirus pandemic forced the closure of yoga studios and limited in-person contact for an indefinite period of your time . As quite 40 million Americans file for unemployment, many of whom lack insurance or paid leave , there has never been a more pressing time than this to think about the chances related to a yoga teachers’ union. It’s not a replacement thought. In fact, it’s an initiative that started with alittle group of YogaWorks teachers in ny back in February 2019. These teachers formed Unionize Yoga, the first-ever yoga teachers’ union to become certified by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB). What began a series of internal discussions among YogaWorks NY teachers about what job security, insurance , and equity could appear as if for his or her profession, quickly reverberated throughout the corporate . The more conversations that happened , the more teachers realized that a lot of of their individual frustrations were aligned round the same issues. Then, just before Memorial Day , Unionize Yoga negotiations with YogaWorks concluded. an indoor email from the Unionize Yoga Bargaining Committee to YogaWorks NY teachers obtained by Yoga Journal disclosed the small print of a severance package for members of the YogaWorks Bargaining Unit. That unit, consistent with the e-mail , includes any YogaWorks NY teacher who had worked two hours or more within the four months before the closure of the NY studios—which shuttered in mid-April thanks to financial challenges. The severance package offered paid health care benefits to employees who were enrolled within the company’s health care plan (any employee who worked a minimum of 10 hours per week, which excludes many teachers) for 3 months following the closure date. Employees would even be guaranteed preference in hiring over non-YogaWorks employees at other YogaWorks’ locations should a replacement York employee relocate to a different market. It is alittle step, but one with implications for a way yoga teachers can organize moving forward, especially during a new era of online teaching and potential studio closures.
Equity, Diversity, and Job Security
The issues at Unionize Yoga’s bargaining table weren't specific to problems at YogaWorks NY—they were industry-wide, the union says. These problems include a scarcity of equity (a teacher with over 15 years at an equivalent company making, say, $40 a category , while a fresh teacher with little or no experience could make twice that counting on who shows up); a scarcity of diversity (studios that still hire and favor white, young, thin, able-bodied teachers rather than prioritizing different body types, ethnicities, cultures, ages, and identities); a scarcity of sustainability (the majority of teachers have alternative sources of income that supplement their teaching, or may have financial assistance from a partner or their family, and in some cases, even inherited wealth); and a scarcity of job security (many teachers may go for very low wages without insurance and lack financial stability). The union has also recognized the various teachers who don’t produce other sources of income at their disposal live under the poverty level and receive public assistance like subsidized housing, food stamps, and more. A fair wage for yoga teachers, consistent with the union, is one that might increase over time with experience, and considers other factors like the rising costs of living. YogaWorks teachers have acknowledged that the pay structure is everywhere the map with different teachers at different pay rates. Unionize Yoga has argued for a group and transparent pay structure in order that all teachers are conscious of where they stand and know where they’re headed as they progress in their careers. One of the most important elephants within the room, however, is that the perpetuation of existing privilege, the union says. If the yoga industry is defined by those that get to participate in it, Unionize Yoga indicates that by continuing to exclude marginalized communities, we’re defining what the industry seems like supported pre-existing biases. “It’s hard to ascertain the large picture until you’ve worked within the industry for several years and see these patterns repeat,” wrote David DiMaria, a spokesperson for the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace (IAMAW), in an email. Of course, this perpetuation of privilege may be a byproduct of capitalism and systemic racism generally and isn't unique to yoga. But aren’t yogis alleged to be leaders and changemakers? More teachers of color are featured in magazines, emerging on social media platforms, teaching in studios, and giving their communities a voice. Rising star Lauren Ash of Black Girl in Om has been carving out a secure space in wellness for people of color since 2014, while yoga teacher, body positivity advocate, and Instagram megastar Jessamyn Stanley has been outspoken about how yoga is marketed toward “thin, white, affluent people.” Still, a 2017 National Health Interview survey found that more non-Hispanic White race practice yoga and meditation than non-Hispancic black people; 17.1% compared with 9.3%. While the industry could also be beginning to move the needle toward more diversity and inclusivity, we still have a ways to travel . Yoga Alliance, the most important nationwide professional organisation for teachers that exists within the yoga industry, provides guidelines for studios and parameters for teacher qualifications and aims to market integrity and variety within the industry. In late February, 2020, Yoga Alliance up-leveled its standards and launched a replacement ethical commitment code of conduct as an attempt to deal with inequities and lack of diversity within the industry. But, consistent with Unionize Yoga, only a teachers’ union and therefore the federally protected rights that accompany it could actually protect teachers, since unions have the proper to barter legally binding contracts with employers. Unionize Yoga says that a universal teachers’ union would prioritize the greater good of the group over the self-serving interests of the individual. The nature of the studio business model generally is to make a comparison culture among teaching staff, with pay structures often found out to encourage competition. In short, teachers are often rewarded financially supported the amount of scholars within the room. As an educator myself, I even have observed that the paid-per-head industry standard can force teachers to become salespeople, liable for recruiting and retaining students so as to raise—or sustain—their salaries. even as a freelancer or entrepreneur isn't purchased the time spent marketing their business, a yoga teacher isn't compensated for the “invisible hours” spent promoting their classes, including preparing for them. this might help explain why numerous teachers find themselves vying for the spotlight. This notion of hustling and jockeying is never , if ever, discussed in teacher trainings. If the yoga industry within the West has indeed perpetuated a culture of homogeneity that spawned separateness and competition among teachers, it’s possible that an industry-wide collective with the standards across the board could function a healing salve. “From the beginning , our vision was to reimagine the yoga industry and to return together to make sure the sustainability of our profession through fair and equitable pay, transparent and truthful communication, and a transparent path for growth, job security, and benefits,” says Tamar Samir, a yoga teacher and co-organizer for Unionize Yoga. While some are saying that the pandemic has forced an extended overdue shift within the yoga industry, without brick-and-mortar studios counting on teacher trainings to survive—many have already begun to shutter their doors permanently. And we’re still faced with an equivalent problem of too many teachers and not enough students. A teachers’ union could promote workers’ rights, seniority, equity, and variety for a brighter industry and a brighter future.
The Timeline of Unionization Efforts at YogaWorks
Within a couple of weeks of the first discussions at YogaWorks NY, what began as off-the-record talks among colleagues led to meetings with management, and eventually, the choice to officially organize and form a union. By the spring of 2019, the group was 80 members strong and dubbed themselves the ‘Teachers’ Initiative.’ that they had reached bent the Machinists' Union, or IAMAW, which focuses on the gig economy, under the advice of CorePower Yoga teacher Effie Morgenstern, who, at the time, was attempting to make a union herself (though CorePower employees filed a series of labor lawsuits against the corporate instead). By the summer, teachers in the least four remaining YogaWorks NY locations at the time began signing union cards in favor of the union, despite that Heather Eary, a regional vice chairman for YogaWorks, sent an email encouraging employees to not . Once teachers had reached their goal of obtaining 80 percent of employees’ signatures, they filed with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB). On September 9, 2019, with support from the IAMAW, the Teachers’ Initiative took their campaign public as Unionize Yoga and sent a proper request to YogaWorks asking the corporate to acknowledge their union. That request was initially denied. Then on October 17, and again on November 14, all YogaWorks NY teachers got the chance to vote either for or against the union, to which an awesome majority voted in favor. Following that victory, YogaWorks teachers were certified as a union by the NLRB in ny . Fast-forward to March 2020: A bargaining committee of YogaWorks NY teachers and reps from IAMAW were within the throes of their second round of negotiations with the corporate . Unionize Yoga had moved mountains; its efforts echoed across the industry and beyond—even Senator Bernie Sanders has Tweeted about it—and teachers round the country were inspired by their efforts and commenced to mobilize in pursuit of upper standards themselves. Many teachers have reached bent the union for advice on how they could start one among their own. What had once seemed inconceivable for the yoga industry had become a reality. But then COVID-19 changed everything. In mid-March, shelter-in-place restrictions put an interruption on bargaining efforts between Unionize Yoga and YogaWorks. In an indoor email that was sent by Heather Eary on March 16 and obtained by Yoga Journal, YogaWorks teachers and staff were notified of a short lived two-week closure that might enter effect the subsequent day. the e-mail stated that teachers could use any accrued pay from their leave bank, which any staffer who wished to try to to nate their accrued leave to a “Leave Bank” had the choice to do so for those that had run out of leave pay. it had been available on a primary come, first serve basis until the bank was empty, with a maximum of 5 hours per employee (a noble effort, sure, but hardly enough to pay the bills). YogaWorks teachers, unlike most teachers at independent studios, are regular employees of the corporate , not independent contractors, which is why they’re eligible for perks like wage and which is additionally why they were ready to legally form a union within the corporate . And though YogaWorks employees who work 10 classes per week (or equivalent) are considered full-time and eligible for benefits like health care, consistent with Unionize Yoga, no teacher at YogaWorks NY had worked that a lot of hours. the amount of hours worked, of course, doesn't include the countless ‘invisible hours’ (class prep, travel, training, etc.), involved in teaching a category As studios everywhere closed, including all 66 YogaWorks locations across the country, the whole industry changed within the span of every week and shifted to online platforms. With the exception of its studios in ny , the U.S. epicenter of the novel coronavirus, YogaWorks began live streaming its classes, offering quite 1,000 per week. during a statement provided exclusively to Yoga Journal, YogaWorks said that despite considerable obstacles resulting from the impact of COVID-19, including the nationwide shutdown of studios and in hard impact areas like ny , that it might still promote “nationwide teacher-first policies that put teachers within the best position to succeed and grow within the future .” But the pandemic continued to wreak havoc on the economy, and, consistent with the teachers who were interviewed for this text , YogaWorks began furloughing a number of its management in April. leave banks dried up. YogaWorks’ out-of-work teachers on staff (at least in ny where no live stream classes were offered), were compensated with a $25 fee for every scheduled class they might have otherwise taught. Under normal circumstances, teachers’ regular pay rates at YogaWorks ranged anywhere from $35 to $125 per class—depending on somewhat ambiguous calculations of seniority, celebrity, and in fact , what percentage students came to class. YogaWorks teachers have said that this broad home in pay is anything but logical or systematic. There’s also a bump system that gives a flat rate per additional head after a particular number of scholars , but it’s unclear whether that system is that the same across the board. Despite that YogaWorks’ payscale is in some respects more generous and consistent than the pay-per-head standard at smaller studios, the shortage of structure within the pay system and transparency around it becomes problematic, teachers say, creating competition rather than collaboration. Eary’s email ended by reassuring employees that YogaWorks would begin “stronger than before.” But by mid-April, YogaWorks CEO Brian Cooper delivered the news that each one four remaining ny locations would permanently close as of Sunday, April 19, citing years of monetary difficulties during a competitive market. Cooper wrote that the ny region had been suffering losses even before the pandemic, despite efforts to enhance studio performance. within the past two years, two YogaWorks’ ny locations had closed (Westside and SoHo). Now that the corporate had lost its lease on the Eastside, the region’s only profitable studio, consistent with Cooper, there was no viable path to scale back the company’s losses and “get the ny region to break-even.” As the news rippled throughout the corporate and devastated ny teachers, Unionize Yoga was faced with a replacement challenge: How can they reach a contract with a neighborhood that has dissolved? As a NLRB certified union, however, their rights to bargain weren't suffering from the closure, and therefore the union continued to barter compensation and other issues that stemmed from the shuttering of the ny studios. “While our negotiations with this specific company may soon come to an end, teachers’ efforts to reshape their world is merely just beginning,” a rep from Unionize Yoga had said. The negotiations at the top of May provided a glimmer of hope for changing the industry at large. The severance package for YogaWorks NY teachers varies by employee and is predicated on their years of service, starting from two to four weeks' pay. A YogaWorks teacher who preferred to not be identified said that the corporate would cap the severance pay at $2,500. (The company requires any employees who accept the severance package to sign a non-disclosure agreement to stop them from suing the corporate or speaking out publicly about the corporate during a negative manner.)
Has the Unionization Effort Been Successful?
Was the deal a win for the union? The short answer: probably. Without it, YogaWorks NY teachers might not have received anything in the least , says a former YogaWorks teacher who asked to stay anonymous. Unionize Yoga had spent quite a year spent organizing and tirelessly campaigning for his or her cause, thwarted by the sudden turn of events that led to the closures of YogaWorks’ remaining ny locations. As negotiations with the corporate concluded, the severance package marked marked a historic a victory for the union. Unionize Yoga representatives say they'll be the primary group of yoga teachers to receive a severance package following a layoff. “We are pleased with our collaboration and accomplishments together and are thankful for everybody who has supported and encouraged so far ,” the union wrote in an Instagram post. As Samir has said, the union’s larger efforts to reshape the yoga world are barely beginning. As news of Unionize Yoga’s formation spread across the U.S. and teachers elsewhere considered the facility of mobilizing and forming collectives, the industry-wide camaraderie will continue. Beyond the borders of YogaWorks’ ny studios, the union’s collaboration with IAMAW, which features a reputation for non-traditional organizing within the gig economy, also will continue. New ideas for a post-pandemic world have already begun to require shape, from the likelihood of a universal yoga teachers’ cooperative almost like an actors’ guild. “The solidarity, mutual support, and trust formed during this initiative can't be dissolved,” Samir said. “It will simply shape shift into another form.” Author: Andrea Rice Source: https://www.yogajournal.com/teach/unionize-yoga-and-covid-19 Discover more info about Yoga Poses for Two People here: Yoga Poses for Two Read the full article

I’m alive (on vacation, but still alive)
Tagged by: no one, though I saw @entj-werewolf do it so I thought I’d give it a shot
LAST:
1. Drink: Water 2. Phone call: my dad   3. Text message: my aunt 4. Song you listened to: Pumped up kicks by Foster the People 5. Time you cried: A couple of weeks ago. Reason is embarrassing so I won’t tell.
HAVE YOU:
6. Dated someone twice: No. I found out the hard way that my last (and first) ex is a manipulative asshole. Dating him is an experience that I do not want to repeat.   7. Kissed someone and regretted it: Yeah. ^ 8. Been cheated on: Nope 9. Lost someone special: No, although I do wish I’d gotten to know my grandfather from my dad’s side of the family before he died. I would have liked to have gotten his perspective on his and my (narcissistic, unfortunately) grandmother’s divorce. I also think that the divorce deeply impacted my dad (although he doesn’t really talk about it) and I would have liked to see the two have some closure. Unfortunately that’s not possible since he passed away 12 years ago… 10. Been depressed: Yeah, due to loneliness (not clinical depression though, I think that’s an important distinction I need to make).11. Gotten drunk and thrown up: No. I’m underage but have tried alcohol before, don’t like it, and don’t plan on getting drunk any time soon.
LIST 3 FAVORITE COLORS:
12-14: Blue, Purple, Black
IN THE LAST YEAR HAVE YOU:
15. Made new friends: No, but I’ve reconnected with some family members (discovered that I got on quite well with my aunt + cousin after a family gathering) 16. Fallen out of love: Yep, although I don’t consider my past relationship “love”, more like “infatuation/idealisation” 17. Laughed until you cried: Yeah. good times man :’) (wish it happened more often, though) 18. Found out someone was talking about you: hahaha… #5. Generally speaking though, my family is very straightforward so whatever they say behind me they say to my face. (Thankfully this has never happened with friends/classmates…) 20. Found out who your friends are: I think I’m in the process of doing that right now. If there’s one good thing that came out of my waste-of-time relationship it’s that it’s given me an opportunity to bond more with my INFJ friend (who went through an eerily similar experience) and my friends from my old school. 21.  Kissed someone on your Facebook list: my ex #regret
GENERAL:
22. How many of your Facebook friends do you know in real life: all of them. I don’t use Facebook that often though, only to message classmates/friends as I find the constant spamming/ads/people parading their "social lives" annoying 23. Do you have any pets: no, but I hope to have a cat some day :’) 24. Do you want to change your name: I thought about this when I was younger, but nahhh. Brooke fits and is a memorable name IMO  25. What did you do for your last Birthday: I attempted to bake cupcakes without parental supervision but the cupcakes ended up turning into fudge because I forgot to add flour (dang it inferior Se!!). I also ate dinner at Pizza express with my friends.  26. What time do you wake up: Depends. Now that it’s summer I get the luxury of waking up later so 8:30 (school days it’s 6:00 T_T)  27. What were you doing at midnight last night: sleeping.  28. Name something you can’t wait for: to finally settle on a college choice (and leave for college, getting tired of high school)  29. When was the last time you saw your mom? 15 minutes ago. Currently at home typing this and she’s outside on the porch  30. What is one thing you wish you could change in your life: My outlook on things, since I tend to be quite cynical and find it difficult to tamper it at times. I think that with a better attitude, extraneous factors become less daunting so that’s why I picked something personality related.  31. What are you listening to right now: my parents talking outside, lol  32. Have you ever talked to a person named Tom: my brother and a former classmate are both called Thomas, so yes.  33. Something that is getting on your nerves: my dang siblings (and to a lesser extent, my parents), also college/academic stuff. for the former, I’m getting tired of them (being stuck with them on vacation for nearly 3 weeks is taking its toll. my siblings are getting bored and keep teasing me while my parents keep nagging me to do more chores >_< I wish they would shut up for once and quit irritating me!) while for the latter I’m feeling the pressure to study so I’ll be prepared for SATs and when I go back to school in a month. 34. Most visited website: Youtube/Tumblr/Reddit  35. Mole/s: Yeaah I have quite a few. They don’t bother me too much though 36. Mark/s: A crescent shaped birthmark on my right arm. I find it kinda cool. Then a scar on my 4th finger from the time an elevator door closed on it. On my left arm I have a scar from the time I scraped it against a bookshelf corner (yikes!) 37. Zodiac: Gemini (don’t subscribe to horoscopes so…)  47. Pronouns: She/her  48. Favorite TV Show: Gravity Falls 50. Right or left hand: Right handed all the way! 51. Vacation: Always wanted to go to Scandinavia lol, preferably with friends/alone.  56. Pair of trainers: Stan smiths. the superstar ones. a couple of months ago I decided I’d hop aboard the trend train (these are quite popular atm). these sport a classy look and go well with (almost) any outfit.

Hugs or kisses: in an intimate relationship? hugs/cuddling.  66. Lips or eyes: eyes  67. Shorter or taller: taller.  68. Older or younger: older  70. Nice arms or nice stomach: I don’t really notice this kind of stuff since personality/intelligence is what matters the most to me, but I guess both would be better than without either so both?  71. Sensitive or loud: ehh… I tend to be attracted to ambiverted people so I guess someone in between.  72. Hook up or relationship: Relationship. Would never hook up… I imagine it’d feel cheap and pointless  73. Troublemaker or hesitant: in between
HAVE YOU EVER:
74. Kissed a Stranger: hell no 75. Drank hard liquor: Again, am underage and don’t like alcohol 76. Lost glasses/contact lenses: Don’t own either so no 77. Turned someone down: once. my ex actually (long story, but I turned him down a couple of times before we started going out. Should have stuck with my initial decision(s) ) 78. Sex on the first date: No. Never had it, would never do it that early. Plus, it isn't smart either as I’ve read that the hormones released during sex can muddle your perception/judgment of the other person (first date is vital for seeing if the other person is compatible for a relationship). 79. Broken someone’s heart: I hope not, but I also doubt it. Aside from my ex I’ve never had any guys express outright interest in me so I’ve never rejected anyone. 80. Had your heart broken: Nah. 81. Been arrested: No. 82. Cried when someone died: …don’t know anyone personally who died, so no. 83. Fallen for a friend: Don’t have any male friends and am not bi, so no.

Kiss on the first date: depends. if i’ve known the other person well enough + there’s been attraction/love prior to dating, then maybe. It’s not something I personally care about that much though, plus my one experience with kissing has been unpleasant (didn’t really enjoy it, the “spark” thing is either a myth or my ex was just the wrong person).
OTHER:
90. Current best friend name: … T_T 91. Eye color: Dark brown 92. Favorite movie: Zootopia, probably. That movie made an impression :P

7 Stunning Reasons You Should Eat Blueberries Every Day
Are blueberries good for you? Yes, blueberries are fantastic for you. When you discover all the amazing health benefits of blueberries, you’ll want to start eating more of them right away.
Originally published by GreenMedInfo
Eating blueberries regularly helps fend off heart disease, cancer, brain aging, and much more. Here are seven great reasons to eat more blueberries regularly.
Blueberries pack huge health benefits in a tiny package. Spring and summer are prime seasons for fresh blueberries. But there are good reasons to eat them all year, and a freezer can be a big help.
Are Blueberries Good for You? Seven Great Reasons to Eat More Blueberries Every Day
1. Berries Stop Heart Attacks
According to a study published in Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association eating at least three servings of blueberries and strawberries every week can save women from heart attacks.
Researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health and the University of East Anglia reviewed the berry-eating habits of 93,600 women between the ages of 25 and 42 over 18 years. The women were part of the Nurses’ Health Study II. Researchers concluded that women who ate three or more servings of blueberries and strawberries per week reduced their risk of heart attack by as much as one-third.
And it really had to be berries. Women who ate a diet rich in other fruits and vegetables did not enjoy the same reduced heart attack risk.
2. Lower Blood Pressure With Blueberries
Blueberries can lower your blood pressure. Researchers conducted a double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial on 48 post-menopausal women with pre-hypertension or stage one hypertension.
Every day, half the women were given 22 grams of freeze-dried blueberry powder equivalent to one cup of fresh blueberries. The other half received a placebo. The results were published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
After just 8 weeks, the women who took the blueberry powder had significantly lowered their systolic (5.1%) and diastolic (6.3%) blood pressure. Those on the placebo had no change.
In addition, the blueberry powder reduced arterial stiffness on average by 6.5%.  No change was seen in the placebo group. Arterial stiffness is a symptom of atherosclerosis and predicts cardiovascular risk. It indicates that the heart has to work harder to circulate blood to the peripheral blood vessels.
The researchers attributed the beneficial effects to an amazing 68.5% increase in blood levels of nitric oxide in the women who took the blueberry powder. Nitric oxide is known to widen blood vessels to increase blood flow and lower blood pressure.  Those on the placebo had no changes in nitric oxide levels.
3. Wild Blueberries Boost Vascular Health
A study from Florida State University found that a daily serving of blueberries could be key to fighting cardiovascular disease in women.
And in another study, researchers from England and Germany proved that less than a cup of wild blueberries can have an almost immediate and long-lasting effect on how well your vascular system is circulating blood. The more easily blood flows through your arteries and veins, the less your heart has to work.
They conducted two randomized, controlled, double-blind crossover studies in 21 healthy men between 18 and 40 years old. In the first study, some of the men drank varying amounts of blueberry polyphenols, ranging from the equivalent of 240 grams (3/4 cup) to 560 grams (1.25 cups) of wild blueberries. Others were given a drink with the same macro and micronutrients but no blueberry polyphenols.
The researchers then measured changes in the men’s “flow-mediated dilation.” FMD is the gold-standard to measure endothelial function. The endothelium is the lining of the blood vessels. FMD is considered a good predictor of cardiovascular disease risk.
They found that as blueberry polyphenols were broken down by enzymes into various metabolites, endothelial function in the men improved. The benefits lasted at least 6 hours.
A second study showed that FMD improved in a dose-dependent manner up to the equivalent of about 240 grams of wild blueberries. Then, the effects plateaued. In other words, the men didn’t get any additional benefit in endothelial function by eating any more than the equivalent of three-quarters of a cup of wild blueberries.
4. Prevent Cancer With Blueberries
A study in the journal Nutrition Research found that daily blueberries increase natural killer (NK) cells. NK cells are white blood cells that play a critical role in the immune system’s defense against foreign invaders like viruses and tumors. They scan the body for abnormal cells and destroy them before they can develop into actual cancers.
The researchers divided 25 sedentary men and post-menopausal women in two groups.  Every day, one group received a placebo while the other was given 38 grams of blueberry powder. The powder was equivalent to 250 grams of fresh fruit.
After six weeks, the blueberry group saw significant increases in NK cells. The results were consistent with earlier research by the same team finding that blueberries improve NK cell counts, oxidative stress, and inflammation in trained athletes.
Other research shows that blueberries are rich in antioxidants that help prevent cancer. Antioxidants work by neutralizing free radicals, atoms that contain an odd number of electrons and are highly unstable. Free radicals can cause the type of cellular damage that is a big factor in cancer development.
Blueberries are also rich in anthocyanins. These compounds give blueberries their beautiful color. They also help explain why blueberries may help prevent the free-radical damage associated with cancer.
5. Berries Protect Lungs
Anthocyanins in blueberries also protect your lungs as you get older.
A study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition followed 839 participants from the VA (Veterans Affairs) Normative Aging Study.
Over 16 years, it found that men who ate two or more servings of blueberries a week had up to 37.9 percent less decline in their lung function compared to those who ate no or very little blueberries.
6. Berries Improve Insulin Sensitivity
A double-blinded, randomized, and placebo-controlled clinical study in The Journal of Nutrition found that bioactive compounds found in blueberries improve insulin sensitivity.
Twice a week researchers had 32 obese, non-diabetic, insulin-resistant patients drink smoothies with or without 22.5 grams of blueberry bioactives. After six weeks, the blueberry group improved their insulin sensitivity by a factor of four over the placebo group.
In another randomized controlled study from Oklahoma State University, 48 people consumed either a freeze-dried blueberry beverage or a placebo drink once a day. The freeze-dried drink was equivalent to about 350 grams (3.5 cups) of fresh blueberries.
After eight weeks researchers found that the blueberries improved measures of metabolic syndrome.
7. Blueberries Keep Your Brain Young
A study in the Annals of Neurology found that anthocyanins in blueberries can slow brain aging by up to 2.5 years.
Harvard researchers measured cognitive function in 16,010 participants 70 years and older in the Nurses’ Health Study. Based on dietary questionnaires, they concluded that eating more blueberries slowed cognitive decline by up to 2.5 years.
It works for young people, too. In a crossover study in the journal Nutrition, 14 children aged 8 to 10 years old consumed a blueberry drink or placebo. Two hours later they completed a battery of five cognitive tests. The blueberry drink significantly improved delayed recall of a list of words.
Eat Blueberries More Often
Making one simple change to your diet by adding blueberries could have a significant impact on cardiovascular health, cancer prevention, and brain power.
In addition to polyphenols, blueberries are an excellent source of vitamins K and C, manganese, and fiber.
Wild blueberries are particularly potent. They are smaller than the cultivated versions most often found in your supermarket, with about twice the number of berries per pound. They also have less water and a higher skin-to-pulp ratio. That means the wild versions have more intense flavor and double the antioxidant content.
During the spring and summer months, enjoy blueberries fresh. Out of season, you can easily find them frozen or dried. Add them to salads, non-dairy yogurt, oatmeal, or smoothies. Or just eat them by the handful.
But many berries are heavily treated with pesticides. So try to choose organic blueberries if you can to be safe.

The Latest: Sweden holds off Japan in women's ice hockey
PYEONGCHANG, South Korea/February 10, 2018 (AP)(STL.News) —The Latest on the Pyeongchang Olympics (all times local):
7:05 p.m.
Sara Hjalmarsson scored 1:53 into the third period and Sweden held off Japan 2-1 in a thrilling game to open the preliminary round for women’s ice hockey at the Pyeongchang Games.
This was only Japan’s third appearance in the Olympics for women’s ice hockey, and they had to start off pool play against a country that took home silver in 2006 and bronze in 2002.
Sweden took a 1-0 lead 2:21 into the game when Fanny Rask scored from a tough angle, squeezing the puck between Nana Fujimoto‘s head and the post.
The Japanese tied it up with 3:08 left in the second period.
The Swedes took the lead back thanks to a great takeaway by Erika Grahm who then passed the puck backward to Hjalmarsson in the slot for the go-ahead goal.

U.S. Vice President Mike Pence is not directly addressing news that North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un has invited South Korean President Moon Jae-in for a visit, as the two Koreas use the Olympics as an opportunity for renewing ties amid concerns over North Korea’s nuclear capabilities.
Pence spokeswoman Alyssa Farah says, “The vice president is grateful that President Moon reaffirmed his strong commitment to the global maximum pressure campaign and for his support for continued sanctions.”
Kim’s sister, Kim Yo Jong, delivered the invitation to Moon on Saturday.
Pence has meant to use his trip to the Olympics to caution the South against “falling for” the North’s overtures, which in the past have been used as stall tactics to allow for continued development of its nuclear program.

An army of high-flying drones expected to light up the sky at the opening ceremony of the Olympics was grounded.
Viewers of NBC’s tape-delayed broadcast in the United States still saw it, but it was a pre-recorded version from a rehearsal.
Intel Corp. was expected to launch 300 drones as part of an extravagant light show, but those plans were scrapped. International Olympic Committee spokesman Mark Adams says the drones weren’t deployed because of an “impromptu logistical change.”
NBC aired a light show, but it was from Intel’s launching of 1,280 drones in December in Pyeongchang.
The incident was reminiscent of the Sochi Games in 2014, when one of the five Olympic rings failed to light — but Russian state television aired rehearsal footage of it happening.

Speedskater Shani Davis has declined to talk to reporters for a second day in a row about the controversy over how the U.S. Olympic Team chose its flag-bearer for the opening ceremony.
Davis, who skipped the ceremony, trained Saturday but walked by journalists afterward without stopping to answer questions.
After luger Erin Hamlin was picked to carry the flag, a tweet from Davis’s account said Team USA “dishonorably” used a coin toss to make the decision and added the #BlackHistoryMonth2018 hashtag. Davis is black and Hamlin is white. The coin toss happened after they tied 4-4 in a vote by fellow athletes.
Team spokesman Matt Whewell says Davis is intent on staying focused on his Olympic races for now. His first race is Tuesday’s 1,500 meters.
A tweet from his account a few hours after the opening ceremony read, “It has been such an honor to have represented the greatest, most diverse country in the world at the last five Winter Games during the same month as #blackhistorymonth #goTeamUSA Watch ‘Origins of Black History Month.'”

American cross-country skier Jessie Diggins says nerves may have gotten the best of her before the women’s 15-kilometer (9.3-mile) skiathlon, causing her to throw up shortly before the race.
Diggins was third in the World Cup rankings coming in but finished fifth on Saturday at the Pyeongchang Games.
The 26-year-old says, “I need to work on a few things to manage stress.”
She says she also struggled with cramping in her triceps during the race and will reconsider her hydration plan moving forward. Overall, though, she says she did the best she could and got the most out of her body.
Diggins says it wasn’t her best race, but she still feels like she’s in a “good place” to become the first American cross-country skier to win a medal since Bill Koch in 1976.

Sweden’s Charlotte Kalla won the first gold medal of the Pyeongchang Games and Norwegian cross-country skier Marit Bjoergen took silver in the women’s 15-kilometer skiathlon to become the most decorated female Winter Olympian ever.
Bjoergen captured her 11th career medal Saturday, breaking a three-way tie with Russian Raisa Smetanina and Italian Stefania Belmondo.
Kalla won the race by more than seven seconds, breaking away from the pack in the final 2 kilometers to avenge her loss to Bjoergen in the 2014 Sochi Olympics.
Jessica Diggins finished fifth, failing to become the first American woman to earn a medal in cross-country skiing.
Krista Parmakoski of Finland finished third.

Race organizers say they expect “challenging” conditions to stage the Olympic men’s downhill on Sunday.
Team leaders have been told the weather forecast is “partly cloudy but the wind will be strong.” Race-time temperatures will be below freezing on the Jeongseon hill.
Gusts and tailwinds affected a shortened practice run on Friday but eased for the final training session Saturday.
Race director says Markus Waldner “it was good enough to have a race today. Tomorrow we will see.”
Waldner says a decision whether to delay the 11 a.m. start, or postpone the race, is expected at 10 a.m.

Russian International Olympic Committee member Yelena Isinbayeva says Russian athletes at the Pyeongchang Games will be more successful because of anger that others were excluded.
Isinbayeva, the pole vault world record holder, says on Instagram that “everything will definitely work out for us.”
She says, “After all, when they’re angry and enraged, Russians are unbeatable.”
Isinbayeva adds she finds it “terrible” that many Russian athletes failed to pass an IOC vetting process examining whether they were linked to doping schemes.
She says she is “very disappointed for all the clean athletes who weren’t let in, who didn’t even get an explanation of why they were excluded.”
Isinbayeva didn’t attend this week’s IOC session in Pyeongchang because she is heavily pregnant.

U.S. hockey coach Robb Stauber knows whom he plans to start in net when the American women kick off their quest for Olympic gold, but he just hasn’t told his trio of goaltenders yet.
Not that waiting to hear who gets the honor of playing Sunday against Finland is bothering Maddie Rooney, Alex Rigsby or Nicole Hensley. They’re all preparing as if Stauber will be tapping them first as the Americans start their quest to end the country’s 20-year drought without Olympic gold.
The Pyeongchang Games are the first Olympics for all three goalies, so prior experience at the world’s biggest tournament for women’s hockey won’t be a deciding factor.
Stauber says he’s also leaving himself some room to change his mind as well in a short tournament.

Yuna Kim’s an Olympic gold medalist and a two-time world champion figure skater, but she still gets nervous, including at Friday’s opening ceremony.
The South Korean performed on a tiny ice rink propped high in the air with 35,000 fans looking on at the Pyeongchang Olympics.
Kim skated for about 30 seconds and then took the torch from two North and South Korean ice hockey players who climbed 120 steps to deliver it.
Kim says, “When I was on the ice rink, I couldn’t really see the spectators in the stadium. I was only thinking I could fall, so I shouldn’t make any mistakes.”
She didn’t.
The two hockey players had no chance to practice. She was concerned, but it went according to script, with Kim delivering the flame to the cauldron.

2:15 p.m.
Early start times for figure skating at the Pyeongchang Olympics are good for U.S. audiences who get to watch in primetime, but not always so great for the athletes.
Competition begins at 10 a.m. each day, and that means 5 a.m. wake-up calls. That’s because of the 14-hour time difference with the U.S. East Coast.
The early starts may have contributed to some tumbles by big names in the opening day of the team competition. Patrick Chan of Canada and Nathan Chen of the U.S. both fell during their short programs. Russian skater Mikhail Kolyada was next, falling twice during his short program as part of the team competition.
Waking up at 5 gives the skaters just an hour to get dressed and board the bus to the arena for 7 a.m. practice.
Then, they have to sit around a couple of hours until their moment in the spotlight. There isn’t enough time to head back to their rooms, so most pass the time trying to rest and relax, often listening to music and going through their programs in their minds.

Racing with a torn ACL, former Olympic champion Carlo Janka has lost his bid to be selected by Switzerland in the men’s downhill.
Janka’s coaches set a top five target in the final practice run to make the four-man Swiss team for Sunday’s race. He placed 18th, 1.19 seconds off the pace.
“I had to be on the very top today. I missed that,” Janka tells The Associated Press.
The 2010 Olympic gold medalist in giant slalom has not started a race all season after damaging his right knee in October.
Janka opted for physical therapy over surgery in hope of competing at Jeongseon, where he got the last of his 11 career World Cup wins — a super-G that tested the Olympic course in February 2016.
Still, he will start in Alpine combined scheduled Tuesday, and maybe super-G on Thursday.
Janka says his knee is “good enough to go on 100 percent” in the dry snow and good visibility at Jeongseon.

1:25 p.m.
Norway’s powerful duo Aksel Lund Svindal and Kjetil Jansrud pushed hard while world champion Beat Feuz took things easy in a final training run for Sunday’s Olympic downhill.
Still, it was Austrian Vincent Kriechmayr who raced fastest down the sun-splashed 2.9-kilometer (1 5/6-mile) course on Saturday.
Kriechmayr was 0.12 seconds faster than Jansrud, who is shaping up as the prerace favorite on the Jeongseon course, where he won the test race in 2016.
Svindal was third-fastest, 0.35 seconds behind the lead, as Feuz of Switzerland eased off in the lower sections to coast into the finish.
Feuz is the in-form racer after two wins and a second place in three World Cup downhills in January.
Saturday’s practice was run over the full course with little sign of strong winds forecast through the weekend.

Pyeongchang Olympic organizers are investigating a possible attack on their internet and Wi-Fi systems about 45 minutes before the opening ceremony.
Organizing committee spokeswoman Nancy Park says the defense ministry and a cybersecurity team are investigating the outage. She says the outage didn’t affect Friday’s opening ceremony or any competitions.
She says systems were almost back to normal about 15 hours after the problems were discovered.
South Korea’s Yonhap news agency reports servers were shut down to prevent damage to technical systems, causing problems with the Pyeongchang Olympic website.
Park declined to call it a cyberattack and says they don’t want to speculate since they’re still trying to identify where it came from.

Mikaela Shiffrin can’t help but laugh when a reporter asks what her reaction is to being compared to Michael Phelps, the U.S. swimmer who is the most decorated Olympian in history.
“You’re crazy,” the American ski racer replied. “OK, he has, what, 23 medals?”
Actually, Phelps’ haul is 23 golds — and 28 medals in all.
Shiffrin’s only medal so far is a gold in slalom at age 18 in 2014 at Sochi. She comes to the Pyeongchang Games with a chance to become the first skier to win that race twice in a row at the Olympics.
She will also be among the favorites in Monday’s giant slalom, could contend for a medal in the combined on Feb. 23, and might also enter the downhill and super-G.
For now, though, she’ll only commit to entering the slalom and giant slalom.
“I would like to compete in everything,” she said. “I’m not sure if I’m actually going to have the energy to do that.”

11:10 a.m.
The U.S. will send out siblings Maia and Alex Shibutani in the ice dance and Bradie Tennell in the women’s short program when the team competition resumes Sunday at Gangneung Ice Arena.
The Americans, who are second behind Canada after the pairs and men’s short programs, waited until the last possible moment to announce their lineup in a bit of gamesmanship with its rival nations.
The Shibutanis were chosen over U.S. champs Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue and the team of Madison Chock and Evan Bates. Tennell got the nod over Mirai Nagasu and Karen Chen.
The top five nations after their short programs advance to the free skate later Sunday.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in is hosting lunch for senior North Korean officials including leader Kim Jong Un’s sister in the most significant diplomatic encounter between the rivals in years.
The meeting at the Blue House in Seoul on Saturday comes after Kim Yo Jong and other North Korean delegates attended the opening ceremony of the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics where they took their place among dignitaries from around the world, including U.S. Vice President Mike Pence.
It’s unclear whether the occasion could be used to set up bigger meetings between the Koreas to ease tensions. The Koreas could potentially talk about a South Korean special envoy meeting Kim Jong Un in Pyongyang or even a summit between Moon and Kim.

The organizing committee for the Pyeongchang Olympics says another 11 people have been diagnosed with norovirus.
That brings the total to 139 since Feb. 1. Seven of the new cases are at a youth training center where security personnel for the games have been staying.
Most of the norovirus cases were in people staying at the center, and about 1,200 were sequestered there, forcing the military to step in to help with security. Those who have tested negative for norovirus have been released from quarantine and returned to work.
Norovirus is a common, infectious bug that causes unpleasant symptoms including diarrhea and vomiting but doesn’t require medical treatment.
The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety and Korea Center for Disease Control have distributed 15,000 bottles of hand sanitizer and taken other measures including stepped up inspection of restaurants and monitoring of water quality. There are signs all over the Olympics reminding people to clean their hands.

Tom Brady Is Drowning In His Own Pseudoscience
Our science staff is trying to lead a more scientific life in 2018. Throughout the week, we’ll be writing about our resolutions for the new year. Here’s the second entry, on Tom Brady’s fitness empire.
I am done with testimonials from professional athletes. I’ve spent the last year and a half reporting and writing a book about exercise recovery1, and what I’ve learned is that advice from elite athletes is often cluttered with pseudoscientific explanations for their stupendous results. The problem is that gifted athletes don’t necessarily know how they got that way. Or, in the words of David Epstein, author of “The Sports Gene,” “Just because you’re a bird doesn’t mean you’re an ornithologist.”
Take New England Patriots quarterback and five-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady, for instance. He’s still playing at 40, a geriatric age in the NFL. What keeps him performing at such a high level all these years? It could be that he’s blessed with a strong arm and a sturdy frame, or that the Patriots’s strong offensive line has (mostly) protected him from sacks and related injuries.
Tom Brady, best-selling author.
But Brady has his own theories. He attributes his athletic longevity to a list of 12 principles outlined in his best-selling 2017 book, “The TB12 Method.” (Twelve is an important number to Brady; it’s not only the number on his jersey, but also the brand on the many products he sells to his fans). The TB12 principles include generic advice like “feeling better — that’s the key” and “balance and moderation in all things.”
Moderation in all things, that is, except when it comes to water. “Sometimes I think I’m the most hydrated person in the world,” Brady writes after advising readers to drink at least one half of their body weight in ounces of water every day. “At 225 pounds, that means I should be drinking 112 ounces a day, minimum,” he says. If you don’t drink enough, he claims, you decrease the oxygen in your bloodstream, build up toxins in your cells and create an “unhealthy inner environment,” whatever that means. (Brady also contends that “the more hydrated I am, the less likely I am to get sunburned,” a claim disputed by scientists.)
Water alone isn’t enough though. Brady also relies on TB12 Electrolytes, “a natural mineral concentrate that enable athletes to turn any liquid into a hydrating sports drink enriched with 72 trace minerals extracted from sea water.” (Curiously, the product packaging lists only 17 ingredients.) Who doesn’t love guzzling sea-water extract?
Electrolytes, though, aren’t anything special. They’re simply salts and minerals. “They’re brilliant marketing,” exercise scientist Tamara Hew-Butler at Oakland University told me. Sodium and potassium are the major ones we need, and your body maintains stores of these vital molecules that it can tap into as needed to protect your body’s normal functioning. “You have a lot of redundancy in the feedback systems to protect their levels,” she said. Unless you’re exercising continuously in excess of 18 hours or more, you normally make up for any loss through the food you eat in your next meal. Despite all the hoopla about their presence in sports drinks and fancy bottled waters, there’s no need to take them in supplements or some special formula.2
Drinking excessive amounts of water when you’re not thirsty isn’t just dumb, it’s dangerous, because it can produce a potentially fatal condition called hyponatremia, or “water intoxication.” Despite the marketing campaigns of bottled water makers and sports drink manufacturers, there’s no good science to show that athletes or anyone else needs to drink beyond thirst, which is your body’s natural way of telling you to drink, just like hunger means you need to eat. But there’s plenty of good evidence that drinking too much can kill you. Hyponatremia happens when the blood becomes dangerously diluted, which can lead to symptoms that look a lot like dehydration — such as fatigue, headache, confusion and weakness. In the most serious cases, it can provoke brain swelling, coma and even death. I have been unable to find a single case of a football player collapsing and dying from dehydration on the field3, but at least two high school football players have died from hyponatremia. Yet Brady says that underhydration is a greater problem than overhydration.
But wait — there’s more! Brady also recommends a restricted diet that, among other things, avoids nightshades4 and favors “alkaline” foods, which he says, without presenting any evidence, reduce inflammation. (The diet is apparently outlined in greater detail in the TB12 Nutrition Manual, which sells for $200.)
For every bit of advice, there’s a product for sale. In addition to the electrolytes and rollers and stretchy bands, there’s a protein powder that he just happens to sell, and a brain training app that you can subscribe to for $14 a month (or $96 for a year).
Brady credits his athletic longevity to something called “muscle pliability,” a term invented by his “body coach,” Alex Guerrero, a man twice investigated by government regulators for misrepresenting himself as a doctor (he’s not) and falsely asserting that one supplement he was shilling had been clinically tested and proven to cure cancer, Parkinson’s, AIDS and other diseases and that another, which Brady once endorsed, could prevent concussions.
What’s muscle pliability? “Pliability is the name Alex and I give to the training regimen he and I do every day. Using his hands and elbows, Alex performs targeted, deep-force muscle work to lengthen and soften every muscle of my body, as I rhythmically contract and relax that muscle,” Brady writes in his book. It may sound like massage, but Brady insists it’s something different. (The best part of inventing your own word is that you can make it mean whatever you want it to.) “The goal of pliability is to reeducate your brain-body connection, which continually sends messages to your muscles to stay long, soft, and primed,” he writes, adding that you can think of it as the “new ‘warm-up’ and ‘cool-down.’”
The book illustrates a series of exercises and self-massages that Brady promises will make muscles less tight, dense, stiff and injury-prone. Do the muscle pliability exercises in his book do what they advertise? It’s hard to say, because the only evidence provided is Brady’s testimonials, and there’s no actual scientific research on this stuff. “I don’t know what they’re trying to say with that,” said Keith Baar, a physiologist who studies muscles and exercise at the University of California, Davis. University of Kentucky muscle physiologist Tim Butterfield told me that he’d never heard the term pliability used in muscle research. To test Brady’s claims yourself, you’ll have to buy some TB12 vibrating foam rollers or, better yet, hire a TB12-certified body coach. “I want to make it very clear that the best method of achieving optimal pliability is through a certified TB12 body coach,” Brady writes.
Maybe he really believes in this stuff, but after reading all 303 pages of Brady’s book, I can’t help noticing how much of his recommendations sound like advertising. For every bit of advice, there’s a product for sale. In addition to the electrolytes and rollers and stretchy bands, there’s a protein powder that he just happens to sell, and a brain training app that you can subscribe to for $14 a month (or $96 for a year).
Brady has faced criticism for his association with Guerrero, and Patriots coach Bill Belichick is reported to be distancing his team from the disgraced guru, but it’s easy to see what Brady sees in the guy. Brady might well be the greatest quarterback in NFL history, and Guerrero has taught him how to turn that on-field résumé into an off-field wellness empire.

On 7/31/14, UVXY was trading at $31. 70. Let's assume on that day an option investor sold 20 $36/$39 call spreads (expiring 8/8/14). collecting a premium of $0. 57 or a total $1140 (minus fees and commissions). Their goal is to get out of the position when the premium of the spread reaches $0.
After a few trades, you'll begin to recognize key characteristics to why some trades win and why some trades lose. From there, you'll be able to recognize what adjustments need to be made in order to mitigate a loss or increase profit gain. 9. Continue to Learn From Successful Traders that STILL TradeWhen you have a mentor, they will often look over your shoulder and ensure that you are setting yourself up for the best trade possible for the current market. You'll know that their advice is sound when you see them trading their own recommendations. I find that it's quite suspect to receive trading advice from someone that doesn't trade themselves. If you don't think you need on-going options trading education and assistance, ask yourself these questions: Why do professional athletes have coaches? Why do Fortune 500 companies hire consultants? Why does the President have advisers? The answer to all of these questions is simple:Mentors hold you accountable, help you define & reach goals, are on the outside looking in, and they can provide a wealth of knowledge when dealing with the subject matter at hand. Basically, mentors help you become BETTER traders. If you are serious about options trading, then it's worth your time to try a few of these steps out today. The more you hone in and apply a laser-like focus on your skills, the easier it will become to identify opportunities to make money in the market. You need to know everything about "puts" and "calls" -- from how they work and when it's best to use them. This also includes knowing everything related to them like expiration dates to where they are found on basic option tables. Skimming over the basics to get into more advanced trading is simply gambling. 2. The goal is to learn different approaches to trading the market. You'll learn about things you have not known about before and you'll even be able to refine your original trading strategy.
