okay, so!

I know I’ve been talking about a @morvantmortuary ita bag for ages now, but I haven’t posted any photos! this is bc I kept having to migrate it between base bags due to my own indecisiveness/occasional misfortune - I’d find one that I really liked and wear it for a while, but then before long I’d spot another base come down into my price range, but then not long after the zipper would come undone and be nonfunctional, etc. it really felt like I was maybe cursed there for a hot minute :’D

but so today, I finally got a pretty solid-feeling nylon coffin base I ordered not long ago, and it was actually cheaper than the previous coffin-shaped base I’d ordered!!

so I decided I would just go ahead and take photos now, before anything happens to it when I wear it out tonight lmao

Ta-da! here it is, in all its glory. it’s a little lumpy bc I’ve already got all my stuff in there, but I think it works for a more ‘casual outing’ bag.

so of course as I’m tallying these up, I’m realizing just how many of them are pieces I’ve collected like a magpie over the years :’D but I did go back and find sources for the ones I could!!

I got the Cafe du Monde button and the embalming machine on two separate trips to NOLA, one before I started grad school and one after.

I’m pretty sure I got the hearse and the scythe at an Oddities show in Austin after COVID wound down a bit (but I know the artist for the scythe is BatsintheBelfry on etsy, and I love a lot of their stuff!).

the MCR pin is from a hipdot preorder years ago, the knife was from a kickstarter preorder around the same time, and the love letter (which has more to do with the manuscript version) was a birthday present before I started grad school. (I think it might have come from Maya Kern’s store??? I’m not sure.)

the Horror heart was also I think a lucky freebie in an order for a little outfit for chibi!Maxi.

the Final Survivor pin is from BearBonesArt on etsy, who does a lot of really cute slasher-related stuff. (it’s more mint-colored than it looks in the photo, my house lighting is just odd.)

and the reassuring reaper pin is from DanyelleOrwickArt on etsy. it’s probably one of my favorites, and she has a whole collection of them that I want to buy the rest of when I have the cash 🖤 maybe at my next job lmao

we did try putting all the tiny!Morvants in the display window! but, uh. :’D

it’s maybe. a little cramped in there. (they did used to call these kinds of coffins toe-pinchers, after all!)

so we might go with something like this for our Outing this evening:

my diss advisor agreed to write the letter of reference for the writing fellowship I’m submitting a sample of the mortuary to, and while he’s only read me summarizing the manuscript version to the search committee (his letter is more about how I can work with a team and take feedback on large projects), this just. makes me feel immensely happy-feet-kicking. 🥲🖤

so if you also follow my personal I’m sure you’ve noticed I’ve been geeking out hardcore

but yesterday the tiny!Morvants and I went to see Lisa Frankenstein

(photo before I took them out and stuffed them in the chest pocket of my jacket so they could “watch the movie too” due to my own ridiculous internal mythology don’t worry about it)

and it just. it was everything I wanted and more. I said in a group chat afterward that I don’t do YA/almost anything high school related, but if I did a YA/toned down version of the Mortuary, I would want it to feel like this movie. it’s not perfect, no, but it’s so obviously earnest and having fun with itself that I’m just smitten. the costumes, the set design, the lighting, THAT SILENT FILM SEQUENCE, I’m just in love 🖤🖤🖤

it’s also absolutely a Maxi first date movie, like. he would 100% suggest this early on when the two of you start dating just to make sure you don’t seem totally disgusted by the idea of someone beautiful (a stand in for you, clearly) being so intimate with someone dead or undead (a metaphor for himself). not to mention the ending which I won’t spoil but your reaction would definitely interest him. I wish the Discord blackout spoiler text function was here so I could explain further lol

…granted, he might get a bit thrown when you ask him how realistic it is that a man who died 200 years ago still has that much intact flesh, but he’d be more charmed by your inquisitiveness than anything else

also. like. look at this shit.

the goth babe swooning with her death-soaked lover in a ruined graveyard. come on. he would be so smitten with this movie it’s absurd. I’m obsessed for both of us rn.

on top of this, early on when we see the montage of Lisa in the woods, the place was so draped with thick and luscious greenery - specifically kudzu vines - that I was like “…I know where that is. they’re filming this scene in louisiana.”

AND LO AND BEHOLD

they didn’t shoot the whole movie there, of course, but the parts where she’s walking through dense woods (and some scenes in the graveyard that maybe aren’t a soundstage, I wasn’t really sure what the ratio of interior/exterior set was for those) definitely have that Look. I was proud of myself for being able to look at the Spooky Woods and go “Hey we live there!!!” on sight lmao.

all this to say, this movie was fantastic, it was exactly what I needed, the tiny!Morvants gave it five out of five skulls (a metric that they just came up with now) and dammit if I didn’t already have Maxi involved in a horror movie au already, I might just be tempted…

but anyway! if you like the Mortuary, maybe give this movie a go, because they’re definitely tonal cousins or so 🖤🖤🖤

you wanna see the thing I’ve been cracking myself up with the past couple days? (again, thanks to @pamelasensei)

so I realized now that thank to her immense talents, I have two versions of tiny!Maxi

and when I had them next to each other in the folder I have on my phone of everything everyone’s ever made of the Morvants ever (I spend a lot of time in this folder), I suddenly noticed a stunning resemblance

and it’s perfect. maxi is just a polite person most of the time, and used to keeping his emotions in check around wildly emotional people for work, so this pointed side eye is exactly how he’d handle most things 😂

found out today that the dissertation funding application I wrote and rewrote for my advisor got rejected in the first round of considerations

…that I’m pretty sure he was on the selection committee for.

like. okay, it’s not the total end of the world or even something I was particularly counting on, and at least I won’t be on tenterhooks waiting until April.

I’m mainly just frustrated that I spent so much time on it, with his feedback, specifically, only for the process to be like “hmmm nope actually ¯\_(ツ)_/¯”

granted, it was good advice, the short summary is something I can use for academic job applications, and if anything, I understand if he didn’t push harder for me bc he can’t look biased. plus, the two people who do go on to the next round from our department are friends of mine, so good for them

but I am. really skeptical I’m going to be able to finish in time for an August deadline like my parents want and they refuse to hear it no matter how much I tell them, and I’m not even teaching this semester. that scholarship would’ve meant I wouldn’t have had to work through a seventh year if I got it, I could just write, unlike the assistantship funding from my department, which only means I can stay an extra year

a. as long as I work for them, which will just be doubly exhausting, and

b. as long as they have funding for it, which can sometimes… not happen.

which means I’m back to either writing my ass off and defending by May, or the people offering me an interview next week for a Real Adult Job in another department like me enough to hire me so I can keep affording my rent.

uuuggghhhh okay. okay. back to the drawing board, it’s all going to be fine.

anyway! @pamelasensei was an utter darling and provided artwork of tiny!Hex and Rora not long ago, and I spent a not-small amount of time since I got back to my folks’ house fiddling around with them to make some images to tag onto posts that I hear in their voice:

well, I’m in full panic mode about my diss chapter and my job apps and maybe applying for seventh year funding and everything else under the sun, so I’ve been doing things to keep my hands busy when I don’t have enough brain to write, and I would once again like to thank the divine and talented @pamelasensei for sharing her tiny!Morvants art with me so I could play with them like little paper dolls on my phone to keep myself sane :’D

(I know skeleton cats don’t have ears, but I can only imagine that after a bit the Morvants all think she looks a little bald without them, plus she seems to miss them whenever she goes to scratch and finds nothing there, so Rora makes her some triangle shapes out of some bits of a leftover bone don’t ask and magically fuses them to her skull so she can move them as she pleases even if it makes a really unsettling scraping sound when she does)

today was the first day of my conference, but it didn’t start until later, so we did a little sight-seeing with my mom

and of course, the gang wanted to come out when we visited Charter Street cemetery 🪦☠️

(forgive my thumb, it was extremely windy out today and of course, they are Very Smol)

it was so cold and windy out that Rora and Hex were both like “fuck this actually” and just went right back into my bag after the group photo, but Maxi, stalwart taphophile that he is, insisted on accompanying me around 🖤

he mostly wanted to come out for picturesque groupings, and he was very excited whenever we saw a grave with a death’s head, as that’s his favorite (and it’s the design from the necklace he gives Final Them in the October Arc but that’s just me being a nerd 🖤)

finally, we went in the small museum next door to poke around, and he definitely had to pose next to the funerary-related plaques

okay, so, the cool thing I said I had to show you!!

as a very kind xmas gift, my mom paid for a very special commission back in december, who’s been waiting at her house for me for about a month or so.

I got to see her for the first time in person yesterday, and y’all, she’s beautiful 😍

Rora, in the style of @stitchybutton — and good goddamn, did she go above and beyond on this one, I’m in love 🖤🖤🖤

I’m definitely going to have to work on a specific place of honor for them as a group in my room.

Anyway! Thanks for humoring me and my plush problem yet again — this is the last one I’ve been really wanting, so I’m delighted to be able to hug her after I just turned in my latest diss chapter draft 🖤

oh man, this week will not stop

- got first notes back on my diss chapter that are essentially “cool but what are you saying” (motherfucker if it’s not there then I have no idea anymore)

- committee has been talking amongst themselves and apparently my longtime chair feels like I’m too far away from his subject now as my question has shifted, so my second member is volunteering to chair, bc apparently my newest guy didn’t want to co-chair, and guy #3 is on leave

- work computer is having problems even our IT person is like “¯\_(ツ)_/¯” about and every time I think I’ve fixed it something else happens and now even though school hasn’t started yet I’m somehow behind

- tomorrow I have to get up way before my circadian rhythm is comfortable *and* stay late to help out with this thing I stupidly volunteered for not realizing my boss was going to gently peer-pressure me into attending the early thing

- and apparently today is the anniversary of my grandfather’s passing and while we weren’t close at the end I still feel like an asshole for apparently completely fucking forgetting

I just. need someone to help me get the knots out of my shoulders, I think??

today the tiny!morvants and I went to see a haunting in venice (very pretty mystery movie with a few good startles, fwiw), and while I was waiting around outside the theater, a very sweet woman saw them in their coffin ita bag and was very complimentary about it. I don’t think she was familiar with ita bags in general, bc she was asking me a lot about the pins and the bag itself, which was a lot of fun to chat about for a minute

(though I definitely started stammering when she was like “who are these guys? what are they from? 😄” and I was like “ahskdlguhhhhhhh they’re from a thingI’mwriting, I commissioned someone to make them for me :’D” bc how. do I even begin to explain *gestures at this entire blog*)

and she even took a picture of my bag bc she liked it so much, which was very sweet of her (but a little confusing for me ngl, just bc the only real theme to it without any context is vaguely ‘new orleans funeral’ ig)

then we came home and I found something hysterical (to me) in my mailbox

for the record the one I got them was more appropriately sized, alongside some starbucks cups and a little frog for maggie to chase, but the shopkeep sent me this extra large (to them) bong as a bonus and it just made me giggle

I think the Morvants definitely smoked more when they were teenagers, but maybe don’t do it v often now bc a. weird things happen with Necromancy sometimes when you’re incapacitated, and b. stalking you keeping on top of their various pursuits, chain-related and otherwise, is a full time job that keeps them on their toes

(especially Maxi, bc he has a reputation to maintain in a small town that already thinks he’s a bit shifty and because he’s never embalming while stoned again after that one time when he was seventeen) (another long story)

the tiny!morvants and I got back an hour or so ago from a showing of talk to me at our local theater (the first one of the whole run!!) and oh my gooood

it’s not as intense as like, hereditary or midsommar, but it’s so subtle in the way that it fucks with you there’s parts where in the theater I was like “oh, that’s weird!” and now that I’m home I think about it again and am hit with a whole different wave of “oh NO” thanks to context setting in. it’s one that you have to watch the whole time to catch all the little details (and listen to - they really deserve an award for the sound design, it’s so cleverly used here). it really might become one of my favorites this year, bc the more I think about it, the more I’m left with chills 👻
