7. Did your muse have a favourite childhood story or fable?
Tumblr media
[ Photo by Leon Pauleikhoff on Unsplash ]
“A story told to me when I was a... child was that of a frog and a scorpion. The scorpion wished to cross a river, yet such creatures cannot swim, and so it prevailed upon a frog to... bear it across the water. The frog was concerned it might be stung by the scorpion’s venomous tail, but the scorpion assured the frog they would... both drown were that the case. Placated, the frog agreed and proceeded to carry the scorpion across the river.”
“Yet at the midpoint, the... scorpion stung the frog, dooming them both. With its dying breath, the frog pleaded, Why have you done this? It is the death of us both!”
“I could not help it, uttered the scorpion as they both sank into the water, it is my nature.”
Seraanna’s faint smile was thoughtful.
“When I was a child, I thought the frog charitable and was displeased... with the scorpion. I thought it stupid, foolish for causing the end of both its own life and that of the frog. But in later years, the frog has disappointed me more.”
“Some creatures, some... beings, are venomous. They will lash out as their nature, their... truth, though it risks their own loss and the harm of others. To not embrace this is to invite disaster. The frog bound himself with the... structures of reason and self-interest and willfully ignored the truth that venom must be used.”
“And paid the price for his blindness.”
(thank you for the ask, @nzoth-the-corruptor!)

WEIRD ASKS
12 | Name of your favourite playlist?
Ooo, okay - my favourite playlist is called { BANGERS } and it’s where I keep all the songs that really get me pumped. It’s a bit of a hodgepodge of genres, but it’s the one I go to if I’m not sure what I want to listen to.
My favourite curated playlist is called { CITY DIONYSIA } - it’s still in progress, but it is lavish. Now you all know how I name my playlists on Spotify.
(Also, a friend of mine has a playlist named “what about global warming?” which is a compilation of happy-go-lucky tunes, and that’s a goodie too.)
15 | Favourite book you read as a school assignment?
A toughie! I think I’m going to give this one to The Marrow Thieves by Cherie Dimaline. Crying in a rehearsal room for 20 minutes after finishing it really encapsulates the experience and, even though it was an assigned reading for a course I ended up hating with every fibre of my being, it really kicked off the term to an incredible start.
48 | If you were a fruit, what kind would you be?
I’m already a fruit!
I would be a pear, though. I’m not justifying my decision, I just would be. So there!
49 | What saying or quote do you live by?
This seems like a very obvious answer but:
This above all: to thine own self be true,And it must follow, as the night the day,Thou canst not then be false to any man.
When Christmastime rolls around it becomes:
This above all: to thine own elf be true.
55 | Favourite fairy tale?
I’m honestly not really a fairy tale person, so I’m going to say that my favourite is all of them. So, Shrek is my favourite fairy tale.
Also, it’s technically a fable, but s/o to The Scorpion and the Frog!

A Nice Drive around LA
Tumblr media
I know this film is pretty clear cut and easy to follow. But I guess I’m a pretty clear cut guy. Drive (2011) is another favourite of mine, and yes it’s an action film like the last film I discussed. But it also has a very sweet love story to balance out the intense driving sequences and gory violence. Sorry, jumping ahead a bit, will give you some background to the characters and what’s actually happening in this Action/Crime/Drama film. So, The Driver (Ryan Gosling) is a Hollywood stunt driver by day and a getaway driver by night. During the daytime, he also builds a loving relationship with his neighbour, Irene (Mulligan), and her son, Benicio (Kaden Leos). But when Irene’s husband, Standard (Oscar Isaac), is released from prison the Driver decides to help him do one last job to repay his debt to some ruthless mobsters and keep his family from harm.
So, like The Good the Bad and Ugly, it’s not a very complex plot. There are some setups and small twists that occur but it’s not that difficult to follow. I also really liked the love story between Irene and the Driver. It wasn’t a corny barf fest that happens in many action films, but presented with a gentle nature that wasn’t too in your face. The lack of words between the two lovebirds probably helped prevent any clichéd lines from making it to the movie. I think the music by Cliff Martinez complements the romance nicely with his use of the Baschet Cristal (which makes a sound similar to rubbing the top of wine glasses). The elevator scene is one of the most beautifully crafted romance scenes in cinema. The music, and the closeness of space, creates a world just for Irene and the driver. The slow motion and the added brightness during their kiss emphasises the climatic point of their love story arc, and its finality. This sequence is then followed by a sickening display of over the top violence towards the mobster, the intruder of their world. Juxtaposing the beauty of their doomed romance with the reveal of the driver’s true nature.
Drive is constantly touching on this theme of a person’s true nature and whether they can change. The visual representation of the driver’s hidden character is through the awesome satin scorpion jacket he wears throughout the film. This jacket relates to a fable about a scorpion and a frog, and how some forms of nature are unable to be altered. The fable goes something like this:
“The scorpion asks the frog to help him cross the river. The frog, worried about the possibility of being stung, hesitates. The scorpion reassures him that if he were to sting him they would both drown. But as they approach the halfway mark of the river, the scorpion stings the frog and drowns them both. The frog, in disbelief, asks why the scorpion doomed them both, and he states it was in his nature to sting him.”
So throughout the film the question is if the driver is the scorpion or the frog. Initially he can be viewed as the frog, carrying violent criminals in his car, and risking a possible “sting” from them as he uses his sweet driving abilities to get them out of danger. But as the film progresses, we see the driver’s violent personality seep to the surface and we understand he is a scorpion and the family he has become so close to are frogs. So to ultimately protect the family, he must not be present.
The overall visuals of Drive are very pleasing to the eye, and I’m not just talking about the driver’s jacket, which I desperately want. Orange and blue are subtly used in the film and are apparently a common palette in Hollywood films, which I have been oblivious to up until this point. Red is also evident in Irene’s clothing to highlight the love theme throughout the film. The streets of LA are eerily lit, and are almost always shot at night. I think this is to give a sense of isolation to the driver and maybe, more obviously, because crimes involving a getaway driver will most likely be conducted at night. But I think I’ll talk about lighting more in my next blog post.
Though Drive is only a short film with a run time of one hundred minutes, there is so much filling that space. The acting, though very understated, conveys so much emotion: The chemistry between Irene and the driver is so unique; the relationship between Shannon (the driver’s employer, and is played nicely by Brian Cranston) and the driver adds some lightness to the bleak violent world; the impulsive Nino (Rob Perlman) and the precise Bernie Rose (Albert Brooks) are both brilliant as the two villains. But Albert Brooks adds some coldness to his role making him one of the standouts of the film. I mean he doesn’t go over the top as a crazed killer, but at the same time you wouldn’t want to get on his bad side. I think this is a gem of a film, and if you didn’t like it, it’s only a short one so you won’t have wasted that much time.

Drive 5 minute review
Tumblr media
Drive is the perfect film. If you are a fan of Nicolas Winding Refn and his film making techniques then you will love this. Every aspect of Drive is phenomenal, the cinematography, performances, lighting, soundtrack and editing are wonderful! The plot follows The Driver (Ryan Gosling), a movie stuntman by day and a getaway driver by night. After meeting Irene (Carey Mulligan) and her young son, he falls in love but her husband is soon released from prison. In an attempt to help the family he offers to drive for Irene’s husband during a robbery but it goes south and The Driver is caught up in a game of cat and mouse.
Drive is incredibly clever. The fable of the scorpion and the frog gets mixed in and there is barely is any dialogue, the acting is so fantastic that it doesn’t need much conversation. The soundtrack to Drive is personally one of my favourites, something that I believe everyone would enjoy. There is a perfect amount of violence and romance and every single shot within the film is framed flawlessly. Plus The Driver’s jacket is fucking A! I highly recommend Drive to anyone who enjoys a good film, sit back, relax and let yourself be immersed.
10/10
