She could not say for certain what exactly it was that cracked the foundation of her strength. Perhaps it was the accumulation of everything all at once, the exhaustion, she hadn’t slept properly in days; the unmeasurable guilt and helplessness that now rested on her shoulders as she was here safe, far from the danger and the lives of her people being lost. And the updates she was being given were not exactly full of good news. She should be with them, though every attempt to return had been unsuccessful.

She felt more helpless now than on the day she had become queen, had lost almost everyone she had ever loved. Then she had been able to take her grief and mold it into armor, had taken her pain and used it as tinder to light a fire within her. But now, now there was nothing.
As the room emptied she remained standing where she was. Though her body was rigid, hands curled into fists at her side so tight, her nails threatened to break skin. Such a tight note had formed in her chest while she fought desperately to remain collected that she felt like she was drowning, unable to take a breath.
Then suddenly he was there, a warm hand cupping her cheek, another at her elbow. His presence startled her, and she yanked back as if his touch had hurt her. He said something, but she didn’t hear the words. It was a moment longer before his touch returned. Don’t fight him. Her reason had not abandoned her entirely it seemed. Let him help. Showing such vulnerability to anyone was not a luxury she felt like she could afford, nor was it something she liked to show. At times the tender heart beneath her chest felt too much like a weakness. But she trusted him, and she trusted him enough it seemed for this.
He spoke again, but now she heard the words he spoke. His tone was soft as he coaxed her with gentle patience to take one breath after another, leading by example. The first one was the most difficult for her to take, but it became easier with each one that followed. Slowly the storm calmed, and the world under her stilled, and a strange sense of calm washed through her as she returned to herself.

At last her hands uncurled themselves from throbbing palms. Though it was a few more moments before her voice returned to her. “I’ll be alright,” she said softly. Amelia could not bring herself to look at him, she did not think she had the heart to see the expression he wore. There had to be more important places for him to be, she had held him up long enough certainly. “Thank you.”
