im diagnosing you with jon kinnie bc you can't see how she is literally just vibing. she's literally just sitting there. she wants to fuck around and find out and im gonna be honest, I don't think Jon is completely correct in his perception of her because time and time again she told him she WAS helen and he kept insisting she wasn't to the point where she had to tell him that knowing isn't the same thing as understanding
I think that jon has his motivations beyond what's stated in the text because he's demonstrated to be an unreliable narrator and I think that his assessment of her is not completely unbiased, I think he hates her because she represents what he has the capability to be and his paranoia did not completely go away, especially considering 'youve always backstabbed me' isn't actually correct. she neglected to help him once. that once ended the world. previously to that every interaction with her was honestly god awful and he declined to help her when she was scared and in the same position he was, this time without any friends, and honestly, if someone was rude as fuck to me everytime we interacted, openly hated me despite me helping him often, insisted he knew who I was better than I do despite clearly trying to approach a complex topic with logical thinking, idk, honestly I think I would have also said 'go fuck yourself too'
in the end jon is a morally complex character and i think at the same time the distortion, and as an extension, helen is too. there have been statements about justification and the entire series more or less has been about “what will you do and how far will you go and what lies will you tell yourself to let you sleep at night?” and i dont think that jon is above that. hes demonstrated his actions are not for entirely unselfish reasons and i think approaching helen with the idea that “she was evil and gaslighting him” as a 100% true statement neglects the complex moral questions the series has put forth and neglects jons current arc of “What am i willing to do for what I want?” even if what he wants is something good, even if something he does for that isn’t wholly ‘good’ or ‘bad’, especially bc jon and martin literally have entire conversations about whether killing avatars even constitutes as something good or bad anymore yes she is evil. she would have been a threat eventually, and even then was one whenever she wanted, really. but “you are not really my friend” is not the reason that jon did what he did, and if he needs to lie to himself about these things, then so be it. its a lot easier to tell yourself that you’re not losing your humanity when you logic yourself out of guilt ‘because it needed to be done’
want to be clear i am not like, “oh jon he’s evil and bad’ and i think he’s a fascinating character but people who are under the impression that jon isn’t losing the ability to determine really what is ‘right’ and what he’s telling himself is ‘right’ are going to be sorely disappointed when he sinks deeper into murkier waters regarding morality
tldr: helen is evil but she is also hot and jon is rude as fuck and I think ultimately helen is a tragic character that jon wasn't every fully equipped to really understand
