I would just like to point out that Merula almost killed Alexandros on their first day at Hogwarts.

But here is Alexandros in year 5:

Risking his own life to save Merula.

They would both be fucked up a bit after this,

For Alexandros it reminds him of the day he watched his dog, Peanut, get run over and didn't act to grab her.

For Merula it's the fact she almost died and would have died. As well as, the guilt of knowing that she almost killed someone who now loves them enough to risk their life for them. Because she knows, no one else would have.
