i think what rue said about love and duty really affected hob, and not necessarily in a positive way

everyone has taken his speech as hopelessly romantic and beautiful - and don’t get me wrong, it was

but it was also tremendously sad. it was brave, yes, full in equal measure of love and daring, but it was so... sad. he spent the entire speech talking about the fact that he was a coward. he spoke as though he had not one shred of honour - as though he was not the man who risked his standing and his life to spare andhera, as though he has not always strived to do the right thing, torn eternally between the rules of the goblin court and his own sense of morals

his entire confession was him speaking lowly of himself

and rue said nothing, and kissed him.

this is not a happy ending.
