i dont really have much in the way of formal or even really informal training in watercolour (never got around to googling watercolour tips JKLDsjkslfds) but i do remember once i think in an art history documentary or something someone saying you don’t need a black watercolour paint because you can just mix a bunch of different colours together to get a really deep and rich black shade and THEY WERE correct that you can get some really gorgeous black paint this way BUT they failed to consider that i am. lazy and dont feel like mixing paint constantly

#this post brought to you by me mixing leftover pigment on my palette with ivory black and falling in love #with how dark and dimensional it can look when im painting in a characters black hair or black shirt fjkdlsd #maybe if i finally move to professional paints and i get some tubes i can mix up a half pan of a bunch of different paint together #to have that rich shade on hand hjkglfdskfjds #i think the documentary was about a landscape painter tho so i think this is less of a problem for them #like they wouldnt be mixing it up every 10 seconds like i would as a person who draws a lot of people with black hair #also having a pan of black paint can be super useful for desaturation #the black in my watercolour set is ivory black so its a slightly warm tinged black #which is good because i use a lot of warm colours so it helps desaturate them nicely #of course you can also desaturate a colour by adding its complement #like add green to some red to make a dustier red #but then again using black or maybe like paynes gray is faster jkdslfd or at least for me it is #this has been.
