it's a lot of incorrect quotes I think. also there's a (very very beautiful and incredible) portrait series that represents alastair as ares (the greek god of the physically violent, untamed aspects of war as opposed to athena who represents the strategic aspects of war) which was very upsetting to me. I understand that its just for fun and the (again very very talented) artist was probably just trying to make alastair and cordelia the two gods of war (cordelia is athena) but him as ares was just so frustrating. portraying any middle eastern man as inherently violent is never going to feel okay to me.
oh okay, I must have not seen the quotes, because I seriously can't recall people portraying him this way
i do know C's series of portraits, and tbh I don't think she meant it this way - but I understand how the association can still be harmful (gotta say I couldn't see him as Ares ); though once I did I kind of interpreted it as 1) what he's seen by others as, and, well, since Ares represents the ugly violent parts of war it doesn't have to apply to Alastair demonstrating them, but rather being their victim? and, most importantly 2) I think Ares is also associated with some positive traits, like bravery and resilience? and those definitely apply to Alastair, so
but it can definitely feed into a harmful narrative, especially if it's a trend like you say, so that sucks and I understand why it's upsetting
I really wish CC would actually realize how other characters' view of Alastair is tainted by racist undertones (or how it, even subconsciously, plays into such stereotypes) and address it in the book somehow, but alas, she'll probably just keep pretending that Shadowhunters are above racism; or better yet, she herself isn't even aware of the associations (which is unfortunately entirely plausible and it annoys me so much)
you're absolutely right tho; it's awful that's still the case so often, but hey, let's be honest, the "West" still controls the narrative and did that narrative change much from Said's description? don't think so
