Travel/Proposal plans in jeopardy due to potential insolvency of my air carrier, what to do?
If anyone can help me out; I’m panicking a bit here.
I made plans to travel to Paris, France from Boston, Ma for 03/15/2019, returning 03/25/2019. My ultimate destination is Bastia, on the island of Corsica. My purpose of this trip was to propose to my boyfriend.
After I arrive in Paris I would catch a second flight to Bastia. The Boston – Paris and Paris – Boston operator is Norwegian Air, & the Paris – Bastia operator is Air France
I booked the earliest of the tickets on 12/18/18, and as finances permitted, I booked the return to Boston, as well as the 1st leg from Paris to Bastia, but not yet the return. I paid with my bank of America debit, and no, I did not purchase the refundable tickets.
I had looked at travel insurance but figured I would purchase it on the 28th, when I got my next paycheck, but I just literally saw in the news today that Norwegian may go belly up at the end of the year. I immediately went to look at insurance, but the policies that allow for financial default have rules about the airline not declaring insolvency within a certain waiting period. Most are 14 days from policy purchase, the next lowest is 10 days, and then…
The only provider I could find that had a waiting period that expired before the end of the year (Allianz) also had a rider that said the financial default coverage only applied to those carriers in their supplier list. Of course this list only listed huge airlines, like Lufthansa, KLM, Delta, Alaskan, Spirit, Jet Blue, and a select few other airlines.
Basically “yes, we offer financial default coverage, but only for the airlines *least* likely to go into default any time in the next decade!”
I have been planning this proposal and have saved up for this for a long time. I even borrowed some money from a friend to make it happen. As it is, I booked with one of the most affordable carriers, and I was going to be staying with my boyfriend’s family, avoiding the cost of a hotel. But all told, I’m facing a potential loss of nearly $800 if Norwegian declares bankruptcy.
Do I have any realistic avenues to protect myself or recover my money should the worst come to pass? I’ve heard of people being not only stranded when they were caught in the bankruptcy brouhaha, but also were completely out their travel costs.
I will call Bank of America in the morning to ask about possible charge back procedures. I suppose I could attempt to “upgrade” my tickets to refundable when I get paid on Friday and then immediately cancel them.
Do you guys have any suggestions or advice? I am going to comb through this sub for similar posts, but if anyone knows off the top of their heads anything else I might try, it really would be appreciated.
