In 1909, Huskies made an American debut at the second year of the All Alaska Sweepstakes Race. There were rumors that these canines were considered superior sled dogs. It turned out the gossip was real as they dominated racing competitions in Alaska the following decade. In 1925, there was a wide spread of a deeply feared disease called diphtheria. The closest antitoxin was 1000 miles away in a hospital in Anchorage. Twenty mushers and their sled dogs braved the bitter cold in a relay to get the medicine there safely. Sounds familiar?
