3914 Trumbull Avenue was built in 1890 for Abraham S. Kinney, a clothing patternmaker. It was designed by Almon C. Varney, one of Detroit's most prominent architects during the Victorian period. The iconic Second Empire mansion at 3966 Trumbull Avenue has a long, varied history. Built in 1875, it was part of the Hodges Brothers Woodbridge Farm development. During most of the 20th century, it was a hospital in one form or another, first as a maternity hospital (Marr), then as a general hospital (Trumbull General). In the 1950s, Trumbull General Hospital became a hospital for Detroit’s black community, at the height of segregation in this country. After being vacant and rundown for decades, the home was renovated and converted to apartment. In 2016, the property made news internationally when it was purchased by legendary pro skater, Tony Hawk. From afar, 4759 Trumbull looks like any other of Victorian home in the historic Woodbridge neighborhood. But a closer look reveals much more. This isn’t just any house, no my friends - this is the Lorax House, that’s right, the Lorax House, inspired by Dr. Seuss’ classic 1971 children’s book about an environmentally-conscious creature that speaks for the beautiful Truffula trees and tries to shield them from corporate greed, namely the Once-Ler. Just a few years ago, this house was a dilapidated mess. That all changed in 2012, when Alex Pereira, a Bolivian immigrant, purchased it at a Wayne County tax auction. Pereira, who came to the United States when he was nine, says that he learned to speak English by reading Dr. Seuss. Pereira’s aim was not only to preserve a home, but also offer a glimpse of hope, particularly in Detroit’s war against blight. Years of vacancy and extreme deterioration had done a number on the interior, which had to be gutted and completely rebuilt. The young real estate developer hired a chainsaw artist as well as a muralist to help make The Lorax House a reality. Arguably Woodbridge's signature home, the William Northwood House (also known as the Northwood-Hunter House) at 3985 Trumbull (corner of W. Alexandrine) was built in 1891. It is an eclectic hybrid of Queen Anne, Châteauesque and Second Empire styles. William Northwood was co-founder of the Howard-Northwood Malt Manufacturing Company. This once-grand home on Trumbull has seen better days. In recent years it served as a church (which, in my opinion, is usually rock bottom for a historic home or building). I've seen photos of what it looked like in its Victorian heyday and, well, let's just say its current appearance is a fall from grace. Hopefully, who ever buys it does their research and replicates what once was.
