#i have a new addition to the list of stories that have invaded my dreams #currently reading sarah mcguire's six swans retelling 'the flight of swans' #and had a dream about being in the situation the main character is in #you know: if you speak a word your brothers will die #(though there didn't necessarily seem to be the swan portion of it) #(it was a dream it was a sort of schrodinger situation of multiple realities being true at once) #and it was mixed up with a dream where i was just hanging out with my siblings and other dream-characters at my grandmother's old house #but the point is that that was a very hard situation! #surrounded by people who can talk to you and always having to be on edge so you don't accidentally make a sound #accidentally making a noise that could be a syllable and wondering if you've just doomed everything #until you catch your next sight of your still-living brothers #trying to communicate via improvised sign language that relies heavily on context clues #anyhow i now have a ton more respect for the heroine of that fairy tale #and my respect levels were pretty high already #incidentally the book itself is excellent #i could do without the great hunt aspect of things because it seems like it distracts from the real story #but it's a very solid retelling and the first one i've read in a while that feels like a quality book not just one that i like
