At 30 Km/Hr, Coromandel Express Passes Through Odisha Train Crash Spot

As the train passed through, a sizeable number of onlookers witnessed the locomotive Bhubaneswar: Four days after the Shalimar-Chennai Coromandel Express was involved in a triple train accident near Bahanagar Bazar station in Odisha's Balasore district, the down train from Chennai crossed the accident site at 30kmph on Tuesday. As the train passed through, a sizeable number of onlookers witnessed the locomotive chug through the distance. More than 70 trains including Vande Bharat Express have so far crossed through Bahanaga Bazar Station since both the up and down lines were restored on Sunday night. The three trains involved in the major accident which claimed 278 lives and injured 1200, were the Howrah-Chennai Coromandel Express, Bengaluru-Howrah Express and a stationary goods train. The CBI has on Tuesday taken over the Balasore GRP case No. 64 registered by Odisha Police. Khurda Road Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Rinkesh Ray said on Monday of the 278 bodies, 177 have been identified while the unclaimed bodies have been kept in six different hospitals. Roy said the Railways has deployed people in states such as Odisha, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu to locate any missing person. More Alive than Dead...

The 2020 syndrome keeps creating new memes. It already has enough armoury on its resume to create a horror movie in its name. The events in Beirut and back home at Kerala keep fueling all those thoughts.

Amongst all the tragedies, there was one thing worth celebrating. The life, the family of the Sathes. Deepak Sathe was the captain of the ill fated Air India Express flight which was bringing back Keralites who were stuck in the middle east during the lockdown phase, as part of the Vande Bharat mission.

Mr. Sathe had a celebrated life. Coming from an elite, highly educated Brahmin family, they had a tradition of serving the country at the best possible level. His father served the Indian Army as a Brigadier. His brother had laid down his life battling militancy in Kashmir. Deepak Sathe himself was a topper at the elite NDA and then went on to serve the Indian Air Force as a fighter pilot for close to 20 years, flying the Mig 21 Bison fighter aircrafts and had played a crucial role during the Kargil operation in 1999.

He was stationed at the now famous Ambala Air Base and had switched to commercial airliners after retirement. He was even part of some UN missions in Africa and was a top notch performer all his life. Flying commercial airliners for close to 17 years, he for sure, did all that was possible to avoid a catastrophic crash and was instrumental in saving atleast 170 lives on board, but at the cost of his own. His is bereaved by his mother, wife and 2 sons, who themselves are carrying ahead the glorious family tradition of being top academic performers and would surely serve the country in all ways possible.

But the most poignant moment of all this episode was the 2 min video clip of his mother. All at 84, she has now lost both her sons to the service of the nation and yet there was not even an iota of grief, or atleast the overboard display of grief in her brief interaction with the media. We are used to over dramatic displays of grief and tragedies where people create reputations in bring over the top performers.

But here was this mother, who has now outlived her brilliant sons, and yet was calm, composed and prompt in her demeanor. She recollected her son’s performances, their glorious days, their services and proudly stated her confidence that her son would have done all that was possible to try and avert, or atleast reduce the extent of the mishap.

There is a lot to learn from this octogenarian. Maybe, a lot more than we could ever learn. The culture of this family can be an absolute idol for all families across the length and breadth of this nation.

But that leaves me with one complaint. We need good, capable, determined, performing people. They are in short supply and losing them to accidents or illnesses is a national loss. Dr. Jichkar, Arun Jaitley, Sushma Swaraj, Manohar Parrikar, Col. Santosh Mahadik, Capt. Saurabh Kalia, Major Kaustubh Rane amongst others. We have a long list of people who would have been of more value alive, than dead. Adding Deepak Sathe’s name to that elite list puts him high on a pedestal, but as said, his life, being alive would have been of more value to the nation, as against his memory.
