#where they think they’re all gods because they got their extremely biddable mal to contact heel at their side….
We can all agree that doodles are often poorly bred because a lot of people are breeding them for profit rather than passion for preserving a breed.
But wow am I tired of seeing the same “hot take but doodles suck and are ugly lol” post over and over. It’s big on Tiktok too and it’s so petty and immature and people act like purebred dogs aren’t a mix of various breeds that was refined into a standard over years of selective breeding. Every “pure bred” dog was a mutt at some point.
People like doodles. Yes it’s trendy, yes doodle people can suck (especially about grooming) and yes they’re probably a poor fit for some people but they’re not going anywhere. They’re great little dogs and they seem to be fitting into families pretty well, regardless.
Considering that the average person with a dog is probably not using that dog for it’s breed’s intended purpose, why can’t we move towards selectively breeding dogs for the purposes of living in homes? Doodles seem to be what that is. The dog that’s social, cuddly, energetic and doesn’t majorly shed (which makes them more appealing as an indoor dog for people who hate fur everywhere)
To clarify, I’m not saying the mass production of doodles via puppy farms and the irresponsible breeding of backyard breeder doodles is okay. But to me I just feel like there’s such an intense hatred of doodles from purebred fanatics that seems so unwarranted.
I used to be a dog groomer so I get that a lot of the doodles are neurotic - and same with the nuts people that demand you brush out their severely matted Cavoodle and lose their shit when you shave the mats off so the poor dog can move properly again!
But damn it’s not as if other breeds aren’t like that at all! I’ve met many poorly bred purebred dogs that had major anxiety issues, genetic disorders ect.
Doodles can be great little dogs. And there’s a standard being developed for the Cobberdog here in Australia which is a doodle mixed with a bunch of other breeds to create a low shed, fleecy fur dog (great for sensory issues), moderate energy, handler focused dog for assistance dog work. There are breeders that are producing really solid dogs with mixes like these.
And to the people that say - “just get a poodle” for assistance or therapy dog work - they are great but they do have high energy needs and that’s hard for bad mental health days or chronic illness flare ups. I love poodles but I have a sighthound because my mental health can’t deal with a high energy needs dog.
Tbh the main issue is the lax regulation around breeding dogs, especially when it comes to puppy farms and backyard breeding, and the lack of standard, health testing ect. Which is not the fault of the dogs that are just. Existing.
