A little bit of fandom wank, comparing the hetalia’s ship wars and the Voltron Antis Madness™, because, I don’t know why, but a lot of people have compared the two of them before.

It is under a cut so you don’t need to read if you are not interested, but if you are interested and want to reblog, no problem, I’m ok with that.

I was thinking firstly about myself. More precisely, about my own bad behaviour from the past. (I’ll get to the whole fandom in a moment, so bear with me ok?)

The ones that had followed me from the beginning know that I don’t like Us.Uk. I never hid this fact about myself, but (as far as I remember) never spoke ill of this ship here on frukheaven (if I’m forgeting something that I have done, feel free to call me out of it. The receipts would be good, but I’m cool with only your testimony, as long as it is not annonimous). Frukheaven had always been (and will always be) about loving Fr.Uk, not hating any other ship, even if I have some troubles with my own temper and I have some heated arguments with some people.

However, my main blog is an entirely different story.

If one digs hard enough into my mainblog, I’m not proud to say that one will find some posts in a distant past that are shamelessly anti-us.uk. It was my nOTP and I was kinda vocal about it in my first years on tumblr. I’m not going to list the reasons why, because that is irrelevant right now, but the point is that I used to be open about it on my mainblog.

With me going to the Voltron fandom I started to wonder what makes me so different from the antis that I loathe? Am I just like them for being vocal about my hate against a ship?

Then I started to analyse my hate and their hate. Also I analysed how those hates would manifest.

Again, what I hate is the ship us.uk. I made posts, untagged posts probably or using the tag anti-us.uk or similars to try to avoid being seen by the shippers (because they didn’t need to be bothered my my tantruns). I censored the ship name so it wouldn’t show up on the tags. And I’m pretty sure I as civil and tolerant with whoever shipped it (I still follow a few hetalia blogs that post us.uk from time to time. The blacklist take care so I don’t have to see it). Just like me, many people on the hetalia fandom do just that: they don’t post their explicity hate on the tags, censor the ship name and they are civil most of the time. Of course, we have a few outliers that will still publish stuff on the tags (even now) and some moments that both sides were agressive with each other (my main blog and me included). As far as I know, that was it on the hetalia fandom. Childish people being childish (me included). We had other issues to adress that were not that.

Now, the antis on the Voltron fandom on the other hand... They don’t hate the ship. I’ve just seen a post about a “anti-shalladin” who rebloged some shallading (I must say that I hate this name) borderline-nsfw work. So they probably don’t actually hate the ships. They hate the shippers. EVERY. SINGLE. FUCKING. DAY, When I visity my favourite voltron tag (She!th, by the way) there are 3 or 4 new antis calling the shippers ped0ph1le5 and other shits like that. They TAG their hate and sometimes even tag some especific people on said hate posts. There is a blog with an archive of anon hate (suicide bait, death threats, rape threats, slurs and other shit), and most of it is from the voltron fandom. Even I received one anon hate (it was milder compared to what many other people suffered, but it is worth mention). People received REAL LIFE IMAGES OF Ped0ph1l1a because they shipped the “problematic” ships. They harassed the VOICE ACTORS, the PRODUCERS, the WRITERS of the show. I really don’t care if some of them are minor. All this is not just childish stuff. This is WRONG. This is HARASSMENT over FICTIONAL stuff.

Even on its worse, the hetalia fandom was all about discrediting ships and being petty, and that is ok, people (me included) are petty and on fandom that wasn’t supposed to have any real life consequences. The antis on the voltron fandom are cruel and vicious and pure evil, trying to dictate what people should and shouldn’t ship AND shaming a character for having a mental illness (poor Shiro had gone through too much just to be degraded by antis).

Between the hetalia and the Volron fandom, honeslty? The hetalia fandom, even if it is kinda dead, is A LOT more polite and better than all the nasty antis.

PHYSICAL.

HAIR: deep black and cut short, the sides and back of his head shaved into an undercut. one long patch is left at the front, a forelock that hangs down over his forehead, reaching down just shy of his eyes. while this forelock used to be the same black as the rest of his hair, it’s now white, the colour lost under the severe stress he faced in Galra captivity. EYES : a dark grey in colour, sometimes looking from a distance to be a deep brown or black. long eyelashes. FACE : strong, sharp jawline, high cheekbones, long and straight nose, thick eyebrows. LIPS : average, perhaps leaning on the thin side – often quite dry or cracked. COMPLEXION : pale, but in a sickly, unnaturally caused kind of way, caused by complete lack of sunlight and possibly other events from his time in captivity. eyes often have dark circles beneath them. BLEMISHES : none SCARS : most notably, the lateral scar running across his nose, gained in a gladiator battle. the rest of his body is littered with scars, of all different varieties. large, jagged gashes, thin but deep lines, claw marks, sword slices, burns – just about anything you can think of. the placings are all very random, all clearly gained from battle, some overlapping. none of it is a pretty nor attractive sight, one of the many reasons he always has so much of his body covered. as well, there is a great deal of scarring on the bicep of his right arm, where skin meets the metal of his prosthetic. Q1 : if you could write your character your way in their own movie , what would it be called , what style would it be filmed in , and what would it be about ? A1 : uhhh i mean, since he’s a very main character, i get quite a bit of what i want from canon ngl. buuuut i’d love some full backstory of his life prior to kerberos, plus everything that happened while the galra had him prisoner. Q2 : what would their soundtrack / score sound like ? A2 : oh god, idk. music with deep, heavy lyrics, but ultimately with optimistic messages? Q3 : why did you start writing this character ? A3 : okay so i’m a big red vs. blue fan, and i was seeing all kinds of people talking on tumblr about how shiro is so much like wash, who happens to be my favourite character and my biggest, oldest muse. finally caved and watch voltron, and… shiro ticks like, all of my boxes for a favourite character + character i can relate to on some levels. he’s complex, he’s broken, he struggles a lot internally but holds it together and helps others, he’s team dad, he’s self-sacrificing… i could go on, i really could. Q4 : what first attracted you to this character ? A4 : oh. uhm. see the answer above. i heard he was v much like wash except more chill and much less jaded, and also who could escape hearing him referred to as ‘space dad’. i’m weak for space/team dads. Q5 : describe the biggest thing you dislike about your muse. A5 : holy shit nothing. i love him and his strengths and his flaws. Q6 : what do you have in common with your muse ? A6 : mm… we both believe more in others than ourselves, both v supportive of those we care about… there may be more??? but those stick out to me the most. Q7 : how does your muse feel about you ? A8 : everyone??? i love getting to explore the older brother/dad dynamic he has with the rest of the paladins, and how it differs between the four. also love the dynamic between enemies, particularly those who put him on edge, or worse. A9 : honestly i tend to wake up with inspiration bc he’s become my strongest muse, right up there with wash, buuuuut rewatching canon, having intense discussions about canon or AUs, and doing character analysis all give me an extra boost of inspiration, for sure. Q10 : how long did this take you to complete ? A10 : like half the fucking day, holy shit. granted, my focus is shit and it’s not the only thing i’ve been doing. multitasking.
