#why the dga didnt strike

The Teamsters have come to a tentative agreement for a new UPS contract which if the union members vote in its favor will prevent a strike.

As labor journalist Kim Kelly says, it will be interesting to hear what the rank and file members of the union think about the contract, but the tentative contract does include some big wins on some of the issues the union has been most concerned about including air conditioning in vehicles.

Another labor journalist Alex Press notes that the minimum wage for part time workers is four dollars less than what they had been pushing for.

#labor rights #teamsters #the point was already made by someone else on twitter a couple weeks ago but while a strike Would be good for the labor movement writ large #it would be incredibly difficult for the workers #and one of the most powerful things about the strike is using the threat of it to get the contract improvements you want #amptp clearly didnt think wga/sag/etc would be willing to commit to a strike (esp after the avoided iatse one a few years ago) which i why #they werent willing to give anything in the contracts which is why those unions did strike #dga got (some) contract improvements they wanted (tho some directors were outspoken about voting no on the contract) which is #why the dga didnt strike #the ups workers have been doing demonstration 'just practicing for a just contract' strikes to force the hand of ups #and the fact that multiple strikes have been ongoing and the teamsters president is a tru labor guy definitely helped force the hand to #make ups actually make some of the concessions they want
