Note
Great meta on the direwolves. There was also a note by George in one of the scripts he was writing: “ A note for future reference. A season or two down the line Ramsay’s pack of wolfhounds are going to be sent against the Stark direwolves, so we should build up the dogs as much as possible in this and subsequent episodes” So Ghost/Nymeria/Shaggy seem to be important in the battle for Winterfell.
Thank you! ^_^ Yes that is a very interesting to keep in mind.
Also notice some of the names of Ramsay’s hounds. He names them after girls he’s raped and killed who really fought back and impressed him. During one of Theon’s chapters, there is a serving girl who didn’t keep fArya’s waters warm enough and she complained. This winterfell serving girl then disappeared, most likely hunted by Ramsay’s hounds.
"All the while Abel's women waited, their faces shadowed by their cowls. They are doing it all wrong. Real serving girls were always teasing the potboys, flirting with the cooks, wheedling a taste of this, a bite of that. Rowan and her scheming sisters did not want to attract notice, but their sullen silence soon had the guards giving them queer looks.
"Where's Maisie and Jez and t'other girls?" one asked Theon. "The usual ones."Lady Arya was displeased with them," he lied. "Her water was cold before it reached the tub last time." - A Dance with Dragons - Theon I
So far, Arya was mistaken or impersonated by girls named Willow and Jeyne.
The Hound names: Grey Jeyne, Helicent, Jez, Alison, Kyra, Maude, Red Jeyne, Sara, and Willow.
Ramsay has had them trained to kill not just any wolves:
"He's trained 'em to kill wolves as well," Ben Bones had confided. Reek said nothing. He knew which wolves the girls were meant to kill - Reek III, ADwD
~*~
"Stark's little wolflings are dead," said Ramsay, sloshing some more ale into his cup, "and they'll stay dead. Let them show their ugly faces, and my girls will rip those wolves of theirs to pieces. The sooner they turn up, the sooner I kill them again." - Reek III, ADwD
We know Nymetia has already faced wolf-killing Hounds before:
“I heard the same thing from my cousin, and she’s not the sort to lie,” an old woman said. “She says there’s this great pack, hundreds of them, mankillers. The one that leads them is a she-wolf, a bitch from the seventh hell.” "When the tale reached Lord Mooton, him and his sons swore they’d put an end to her. They tracked her to her lair with a pack of wolfhounds, and barely escaped with their skins. Not one of those dogs came back, not one.”
George said build these Hounds/Direwolves rivalry up and D&D instead said PASS.
The books will save us. Any day now.
