Critical thinking application activity
Taryn, Malakai, Dailyn, Hannah
My team came up with the scenario that if we had $6 million to improvise the quality and long term plan for Manor park we would use the money to distribute it into different interventions. The mayor should consider investing the money by putting $2 million into youth development/education $1 million into crime, $1 million into affordable housing, $1 million into senior care, and $1 million into business investment. This money needs to be going towards long term investment as the mayor had concerns regarding long term investments. Long term investments could be building a park, a school, etc. The information in this scenario that was relevant was mentioning how constituents are looking to see immediate changes. Information that was irrelevant was mentioning the different chain companies in the neighborhood. My proposal would change if the money were 1million total investment by focusing more towards crime and youth development.

Chapter 13 Fieldwork
Summary: Interviewing an immigrant
For this fieldwork, I decided to interview my grandmother on my mother's side of the family. She emigrated to the United States from Trinidad and Tobago in the 70s. My grandma explained that her voyage to America was not easy and she did come here illegally. Originally, my grandma flew to Canada first and then drove over to America. My grandmother was in New York for a couple months until she moved to California and started her life there. Push and pull factors that were in the decision for my grandmother to emigrate to America was for new opportunities and a better lifestyle. She mentioned how she did not want to start her family in Trinidad. My grandmother did open up about sensitive topics that influenced her lifestyle here in America. She talked about how drugs in California during the the late 70's and 80's were taking over her life in negative ways. She portrayed how drugs were affecting black communities in her neighborhood in bad ways that caused lot's of violence. Drugs was a huge factor that influenced her experience as an immigrant that she shared. My grandmother explained that she was determined to get off drugs to take care of her kids and support for her family. She moved out of that area and raise her kids in a better city. My grandma is healthy and well and I appreciate her very much. She has carried over many Trinidadian traditions and culture with her like her cooking, music, and hospitality!

Group 14 Fall 22 Playlist
Shaniah
I chose Married Next Year by Rod Wave because because we had the chapter about marriage and it made me look at marriage differently and now it’s ultimately something I want in the near future & in the song he talks about settling down and getting married next year.
Tyona
The song the heart part 5 . This song defines culture because it rips off the truth about society. It brings things to life that people sweep under the rug. We spend too much time on what the world give us to engage our minds as far as the lastest news on social media or the entitlement feelings we have on irrelevant topics. Kendrick shows us the declining of our culture
Tayrn
i chose "dear mama" by Tupac because he dedicated this song to his mother basically saying how much he appreciates her for everything she has done for him and taught him, it relates to chapter 9 which is Kinship, family, marriage. He defines his relationship with his mom which is family and how they treat other.
Sam
sam chose “c7osure (you like)” by Lil Nas X because it relates to chapters 8 “Sexuality”. In the song Lil Nas X comes out to the world about his sexuality. I think this also relates to me because i’m also gay and the song hit home for me. He defines sexuality all throughout the song by letting the world know that it’s not about what you like, it’s about how you should be treated well whether what you identify as.
Our Group Choice
Our group song relates to chapter 10 social inequality & chapter 5 race and racism. “They don’t care about us” by micheal Jackson , where he was singing about inequality, racism (especially towards black people), police brutality and other human rights abuses all in one song.

Flu Season in College
Tumblr media
As college students, we are more likely to get the flu as we come in contact with hundreds of new faces everyday. We are also in a new environment with new germs and bacteria. The flu will spread easier on a college campus than at your house back in your hometown. College students are also involved in more social outings like parties, sports games, and more which means you are engaging with more people.
Tumblr media
The flu shot causes antibodies to develop in your body which provides protection against infection. You may find yourself getting sick more often while in college than usual, and this is because of new infection and bacteria. Getting the flu shot will help with that. Getting the flu shot is very accessible as your place of occupation may offer flu shots. You can also go to your healthcare provider and get a shot there.

Kinship Family Chart
Tumblr media
By simply looking at my family tree, you do not quite get the full story of what my family has to tell. For example, this chart does not show how my mom has 6 different half siblings. My grandma and grandpa only had one baby together which was my mom, but they had relations with other people which gave my mom many half siblings from both sides. I have many cousins that I have never met before, but simply looking at this family tree you would be able to see that. Although to sum everything up, my family is beautiful and I do love attending our annual family reunions.

Chapter 6 Field Work
How long has your family lived in America?
On my dad's side of the family they have been in America for generations. They are black American. On the other hand, my grandma on my mom's side is from Trinidad and she came to America in the 70s from Trinidad. My grandma did come to this county illegally with her sister (my aunt) and got her papers later on. My mom's side of the family been in America since the 70's.
Tumblr media
Has your family embraced American nationalism?
My family does embrace American nationalism as we love to attend baseball games for our favorite team. As a family we make it a tradition to tailgate before each baseball game we go too. We also embrace American natinalism by throwing a grand BBQ for the 4th of July where we eat and watch fireworks. On the other hand, my grandma migrated here from another country but she interate her American identity with her ethnic identity. For example, my grandma still cooks Trinidadian food and combines her ethnicity with American nationality.
The results of my research affect my own personal view of ethnicity and nationalism because I learned the real difference between the two. Nationalism is how you show identification with one's country as in citizenship, and support for the country's interest. Showing your importance, value, and respect to the country. Ethnicity is a group or categorization based on culture or religion.

Ch.5 Fieldwork
White Supremacy
Tumblr media
White supremacy is beliefs and ideas emphasizing that the white human races is superior over other racial groups. This is largely shown and viewed in American culture (our country). For example, our formal president Donald trump was a white supremacist who's slogan was to "make America great again" meaning to gain power and benefits for only white people. Additionally, a riot perpetrated against the capitol by Donald trump supporters that was enforced by Donald trump himself. Our country is viewed as white people can get away with things that black people or any other person of color can't. The system has been like this since the beginning and it all roots from white supremacy.
American culture
Tumblr media
in 2018, Childish Gambino an American rapper/singer released a song called "This is America" where the song focuses on a side how the world views America and then the other side what America is hiding (that is not shown). The side that is portrayed to the world is the American dream where every family is living behind a white picket fence, in a beautiful home with great jobs. The side that is not shown is the struggle minorities go through in this country on a daily basis. The music video targets black life in America and American culture by including secret messages and symbolism throughout the video like black people fighting the police etc. We can say that our culture the (American culture) is portrayed to other culture as fast food, sports, and privileged.
Genetics
Tumblr media
In the human we race we distribute ourselves into groups based off of race. According to chapter 5, based on variations of skin color and other visible features associated with race are shaped by less than 0.1% of genetic code. For example, a person from Western Africa who starts walking east will have more in common genetically with someone in Russia compared to their neighbor at home.
Stereotypes
Tumblr media
Stereotypes are widely held fixed ideas of a particular race or group. A popular stereotype among the black race is that we have large noses/ large lips. As the first humans evolved from Africa, your features came from where you are in the world and the climate of that location. According to the article sciencelet, an advantage with having a larger nose facilitates breathing in more air thereby supplying the body with more oxygen especially in warm climates. Physical activity in a hotter environment is more demanding because your body requires more oxygen rather than in cooler climates. So
Tumblr media
The show blackish also portrays black culture stereotypes. It shows how a typical black family lives in America and the struggles that come with it. In the show, it shows how black culture is viewed from an inside and outside perspective.
Microaggression in American society
Tumblr media
Microagression is common for POC in America and it is simply a term for everyday insults, snubs, or negative attitude to target someone solely on their race or culture. We have a common with microagression in many places such as the workplace, hospitals, and unfortunately schools. Many black children are judged right when they walk in the door that they are either disruptive or will slack off. This judgement roots from racism and has turned into a microagression in schools. For example, the award winning movie The great debaters portrays a group of kids from an HBCU that challenge white kids in debating during the 1935 era. In the movie, actor Denzel Washington starts a debate team at a hbcu which was highly unheard of during that time. In the movie, nobody expected anything great from this all black debate team. They were viewed inner American culture as dense and unintelligent. Surely, these kids made a good name for themselves and ended up winning the debate contest. Although they won, they were judged on their knowledge just because they are black which gave them the disadvantage.
Racial genocide
Tumblr media
Racial genocide is the systematic destruction of a group of people because of their race, ethnicity, or religion. In the us, too many black people have died for crimes they did not do. We call this a racial genocide as many of them from the same race was killed. For example, according to the article Black Agenda Report, the Martinsville seven were seven black men who died in the state of Virgnia's electric chair for a rape they never committed. Black genocide still occurs under color of law.

Chapter 2 Fieldwork:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is my room where everything on my list is stored. The items I need include my toothbrush/toothpaste, laundry hamper, bed/bedding, clothes, shoes, and bath essentials like towels, hair products, razor, and soap. The items that are a want is my designer tote bag, computer, designer perfumes, iPhone 12 max, and my vanity. What I learned about myself after completing this assignment is I am a materialistic girl and I like expensive things! I didn't realize most of my shoes are more than $200 which is a want and not a need because I could have bought way more affordable shoes. I also learned that many of my family members and friends gift me with expensive gifts with I am very grateful for.
