I’m gonna be serious for as sec and say that I know I focus on the funny and the chaos and the genius and the billionaire of it all, but I want Taylor to know, in case of the minuscule chance she were ever to accidentally read my blog, that I see and feel the sadness and righteous anger, and I’m sorry you went through that and it continues to haunt you.

I was on a work call for a couple of hours and returned to find that we have moved on to the “TTPD is about Dylan O’Brien” stage of the album rollout.

Remember that for like 5 seconds last year you changed your username to saylorrepdetective because the Twitter Gaylor were being Twitter Gaylorries again so you changed your username presumably to mock them for being so Chloe or Sam or Sophia or Marcus about literally everything
Oh right I do remember that. But now I don’t remember what the S was for.

Does the hedge maze have any topiary sculptures in and/or around it?
It has Cat topiaries mostly but there is at least one dog.

Imagine you’re living in a communal house with a bunch of people who like to do puzzles of pictures of cats. Everyone likes to do them and you all get pretty good at it.
Then one day, a mysterious someone secretly switches all the box tops of the puzzles. No one knows. But people go on enjoying trying to put the puzzles together because that’s what what they do together. And it’s always been fun and they are good at it. But the puzzles are suddenly very hard to put together. Because they are trying to match the picture on the box. But the pieces don’t match the picture on the box. Regardless, they keep trying to force those pieces to fit the picture on the box. It’s confusing and frustrating to be in this group of people who all used to enjoy putting puzzles together. Then one day someone goes “hm, what if the box tops got switched and we’re going about this in the wrong way?” But everyone says “naw, we’re halfway done with all these puzzles and look, we have half a cat here and there, so it can’t be wrong!” But the person who made the wrong top suggestion points out that all of the pictures are similar and some of their pieces have been unnaturally jammed together, so maybe it’s time to stop and look at this switched box top possibility. Some will say “yeah, ok let’s start over and check into this,” while others will say “no, it’s got to be right as is, who would switch the box tops and why?” and others will lose interest in the cat puzzles all together because it’s not fun anymore. And eventually some of the new thinkers will successfully find the right box top and put together a puzzle and say “see?” And that will convince a few, but others will say “that may be true of that one puzzle, but I’m sure it couldn’t be true of ALL the puzzles” and they will continue on. Some petty fights will break out and more people will leave the community because it’s no longer fun. But over time those still left will finally see that with a little patience, the puzzles all are solvable.
And then we find out the mysterious someone was the landlord and what they really wanted was to get rid of a bunch of the randos living in their house.

I saw a revival showing of Hitchcock’s Rear Window last night at the Castro Theater. I’ve seen it before, but it’s been a while, and it’s always nice to watch an old movie in an old theater surrounded by an enthusiastic audience.
While watching it, I was reminded that Taylor mentioned watching this for the first time in early quarantine, and at the time we all talked about her Me! dress that was clearly inspired by Grace Kelly’s iconic dress. Somehow she had never seen the movie when she co-directed this video more than a year before watching it. Forgive me if I’m skeptical of her claims.

Let’s look at a few other similarities between this movie and the opening scene of Me!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We start out side on a (colorful) cobble stone sidewalk. The snake turns into a kaleidoscope of butterflies and we follow one up to the window of an apartment. Along the way, we see surrounding buildings. The way the pan happens is reminiscent of the opening scene of RW. https://youtu.be/I3uo8sd_xBc?si=NhUj3-hGP-oX3yLj
youtube
.
The opening title sequence also starts with 3 windows, with the shades going up on each one, which reminded me of the end game video where she pulls back the curtains and looks out on each city. https://m.youtube.com/watch?si=Y05_ipX2g4--g2nF&v=4No2ZhJwVGU&feature=youtu.be
youtube
There’s even a pigeon that flies across the screen that reminds me of the buttery.
But most interesting is the scene where Grace Kelly wears the iconic dress. She has come to visit her invalid boyfriend and treats him really nicely, and he responds by acting like a total jerk, they argue because he doesn’t want to marry her, and she leaves in huff. All in a 1954 Greenwich village apartment. Some of this sounds very familiar to Taylor’s themes in her art.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ok actually that’s not the most interesting to me, what’s most interesting to me is something I thought of when she first said she watched this movie, because one of the major themes of the movie, beyond it just being a murder thriller, is voyeurism. The inability of humans to NOT look. To not pry. If there’s an open window, we’re gonna look in. And our curiosity about the lives of others is insatiable. No matter what you do, people are gonna look and wonder and speculate. So the only answer is to close the blinds. But even a closed blind, like with the newlyweds in the movie, will create speculation from the watchers. A closed blind meant they were consummating their marriage. What a creepy thing to speculate about. But we do it regardless because it’s human nature.
What are you gonna do if you can’t stop the insatiably curious watchers while you do things you’re not “supposed” to do (whether it’s murder or something benign but forbidden) without being found out? You either get “caught,” or you find a way to distract or fool the watchers.

Sometimes I think about how in The Good Place season 4, the head demon had to choose two terrible, irredeemable people to be the experimental subjects that the main cast had to turn into better people in order to save the world, and one of those two bad people they chose was based on Perez Hilton.

Picture a hypothetical hedge maze.
There are multiple entry points to this maze. Each entry gives clues to its potential as being able to lead you on an easy path to the center. In the center, the prize is you get confirmation that you now understand the details of Taylor swift’s private life and inspiration behind her songs.
So you choose an entrance that seems the best to you, based on what you know. You enter the maze and it is infinite. There are multiple twists and turns and dead-ends. As you wander through, new paths are created and you follow some of those as well. You get nearer and nearer to the center but you never quite reach it. Along the way, you encountered others on the same quest. You find out they entered the maze at a different point than you, but here you are at the same point. You walk along together for a bit but eventually you choose different paths and part ways. You can see the center but you can’t get in. So you retrace some steps and try different paths, with the same result. You never quite make it to the middle.
So you make your way out of the maze and look at the entrances again. Maybe you try a different entrance with clues that don’t make quite as much sense as the first one but you figure you’ll give it a try. Similar results as the first but you don’t ever get as close to the center as you had the first time.
So again you make your way out and re-examine the entrances. There is one entrance you never try because it’s not even really an entrance. It’s guarded by a creepy abandoned ventriloquist dummy that haunts your dreams since childhood, and is partly overgrown with thorns, and immediately inside it appears to be a dead-end you can see without even going in.
So you go back to the first one. Since you left, many new paths have been generated and you try some of them, but again you can’t reach the center. You’re farther away than ever.
You repeat this endlessly. Trying different entrances wandering the twist and turns. But never make it to the center.
What you don’t know is that there is only one entrance that can get you to the middle. And that entrance is the stupid scary looking one you don’t ever try. That one, once you pass the harmless but scary dummy, and wiggle through a bit of the overgrowth, you find that the dead-end is false, and it leads into a labyrinth with one twisting turning path directly to the center. If only you’d get past the fear of going in…
