right here’s the tea, james is a girl & she didn’t cheat on betty, let me explain

1. james n inez are named after blake lively n ryan reynolds’ daughters, both girls, they’re sisters, and inez is probably a bit of a gossip

2. james & betty weren’t dating

2a. if they were officially together, then james would’ve picked betty up for the dance instead of arranging to meet her there

2b. she also wouldn’t have thought anything of betty dancing with someone else, people dance with their friends all the time, and if they were dating in an official capacity then james wouldn’t have assumed that betty was romantically interested in whoever she was dancing with

2c. james’ pov of the situation doesn’t read like a “i’m sorry for cheating”, it’s more “i was afraid of what you meant to me, and couldn’t believe that someone like you could be interested in someone like me, so when i saw you with someone else i jumped to conclusions, because it was exactly what my insecurities were already telling me. i’m sorry for not talking to you about it, and i’m sorry for running away. i’m not afraid of us anymore, can i please have a second chance?”

3. the sheer amount of longing, tenderness, and regret present in ‘betty’ the song could not have been expressed by a cishet man

anyway these r just my humble onions, i’ve seen a bunch of other interpretations n to each their own!!!! but this is just how i see it

i read that “peter losing wendy” doesn’t just mean parting ways but the way they did so. peter chose to never grow up so wendy left, whereas james used immaturity at 17 to justify himself so betty grew up without him

august is like….. how about i construct a whole dream of our hypothetical relationship that never actually becomes reality for more than a moment but the sheer power of the images in my head of our potential is enough to keep you in my heart forever…… there’s absolutely no bitterness at all just the longing of a time when it was enough to live for the hope of it all
