Insert Coin: GameDock lets your iPhone interface with a TV and controllers, game it old school http://bit.ly/N87pDu
In Insert Coin, we look at an exciting new tech project that requires funding before it can hit production. If you'd like to pitch a project, please send us a tip with "Insert Coin" as the subject line.
With its GameDock, Cascadia Games has a new twist on iOS arcade play -- it lets you use your TV and two classic controllers. While retro games are popular on iPhones right now, an intense session can go haywire if your digits slip around on the tactile glass, and head-to-head play is literally that if you're sharing a small device with a foe. That aforementioned situation inspired the GameDock, which turns into a full-blown console when you plug in and pair your iPhone, iPad or iPod using Bluetooth, then connect your TV, along with a couple of USB game controllers. Just like that, you and a buddy are playing big-screen Asteroids, Centipede and 100 or so other iOS games that work with iCade. With 43 days remaining, just shy of 10 grand has been upped toward the $ 50K goal, so check the source if you want to revel in the gaming days of yore -- eye or thumb strain-free.

iPad mini rumors resurface like so many leftovers, have production start in September http://bit.ly/M6DHAY
There have been rumors of a shrunken iPad since time immemorial, so you'll have to forgive us if we look at most fresh claims with a jaded eye. Still, when both Bloomberg and the Wall Street Journal hear that Apple is close to producing a tablet with an 8-inch or smaller screen, there might be some fire to go with the smoke. What details that exist are unsurprisingly thin outside of the dimensions, although Bloomberg understands that there won't be a Retina display like in the current 9.7-inch slab. That's not a shock given the size and likely cost concerns -- we're more interested in the talk of nearing production plans with an uncanny level of synchronicity. The Wall Street Journal has caught murmurs that volume production ramps up in September, while its business paper rival Bloomberg thinks that an announcement could come "by October." We still won't be shocked if these are just wild misinterpretations of an upsized iPod touch or become nothing but vapor. Should they pan out, however, our good friend the Nexus 7 could feel some heat this fall.

Motive Stylus – Unique for the Sake of Uniqueness? http://bit.ly/Nx1tnr
Gadgeteer reader Tony N sent me an email asking me to take a look at a Kickstarter project that he thought I’d find interesting. It’s for a very unique stylus that actually rolls up when you want to use it and then unrolls into a flat sheet that sticks to the outside of the iPad’s smart cover when you’re not using it. It’s called the  Motive Stylus and when I first saw it, I thought holy cow, this is really cool. Made of multiple anodized aluminum segments that when rolled up form a 6 sided stylus, it should feel as familiar to hold as a regular wooden pencil. The stylus ships with 2 screw-on stylus tips. One is a softer tip and the other a harder tip. Strong neodymium magnets inside the Motive Stylus hold it securely to the outside of the smart cover. Their Kickstarter pitch pushes the fact that the Motive Stylus won’t get in the way of using your smart cover when you’re not using the stylus, because it will be stuck flat to the cover. You can still use your cover as a stand, etc. Of course, even if you didn’t unroll it, it wouldn’t get in the way of using the cover as a stand… So the roll up, roll flat feature is really only there for geek appeal. That doesn’t mean that I don’t want one. Heck yeah I do If you want one too, you can pledge $ 30. You’ll even get your choice of 4 different colors.

Apple may get the Italian boot, has 30 days to push a 2-year warranty for locals http://bit.ly/KSkvVe
Italian regulator AGCM is clearly on a short fuse with Apple. After issuing a €900,000 fine ($ 1.1 million) to Apple for not properly offering the free 2-year warranty required by national law, the agency is now warning the iPhone maker that it could face a temporary exile -- and we don't mean to Elba. On top of an additional €300,000 ($ 377,490) potential fine, Apple now faces as much as a 30-day shutdown of all its Italian business for allegedly doing too little to tell customers they don't always need AppleCare for extended coverage. Having lost its appeal on the original fine, Apple's main buffer is a 30-day window to address the complaints before the hammer drops. We have yet to see if Apple will tweak its policies in time, but it's hard to believe the American firm will risk even the momentary closure of an important European wing.

Kodak gets the green light to sell digital imaging patents http://bit.ly/M4lp3q
It's been a long road for Kodak to get to this point, but it seems the floundering company has finally won approval to sell off its digital imaging patents. Over the objections of Apple and Flashpoint (nothing like kicking a company when its down), the Bankruptcy Court awarded Kodak the right to auction off its Digital Capture and Kodak Imaging Systems and Services (KISS) patent portfolios. While the challenges haven't been completely dismissed, the ruling provides an opportunity for the struggling Rochester firm to move ahead with its auction plans in the face of what it calls "baseless claims." Soon enough the bids for the rather sizable and valuable portfolios will start rolling in, and should provide Kodak with enough cash to keep its head above water for a little bit longer. For more detail, check out the PR after the break.

Google Places for iOS becomes Google Local, adds voice search in the process http://bit.ly/MrSGJd
It was only a matter of time before Google+ Local started spreading to the mobile space, and iOS looks to be its first landing spot through a rebadge of the Google Places app. Apart from achieving harmony with Google's rapidly swelling social universe and letting us check Zagat ratings for nearby establishments, the update slips in the same voice search that Google has had in its primary Google Search app: we won't have to search for the best Vietnamese cuisine with that archaic keyboard. The refresh makes it similarly easy to find locations that aren't directly close by, and there's a tighter login process to keep that bar search history away from prying eyes. If you're a social adventurer with an iPhone or iPod touch, Google just gave your expeditions a shot in the arm. [Thanks, Bono]

AiAiAi Capital headphones bring the beats, take abuse on the streets (video) http://bit.ly/OefdrZ
Denmark's AiAiAi has developed a reputation for targeting its headphones at specific listeners. This time, it's aiming at someone we know all too well: the urban dweller who goes through replacement headphones like so much meat through a grinder. The Capital over-ears' bolstered fiberglass shell is designed to be rain- and snow-resistant, not to mention take the casual knocks that might beat up other headphone pairs. The foldable set likewise gives us every excuse to keep it on our heads, both through a light and reputedly comfortable brace as well as an in-line mic and remote to take that iPhone call through the Capital's 40mm drivers. At $ 125, the pair isn't the lowest-cost entry into the headphone world, but if it spares us from having to dive for cover when the weather turns foul, it could well be a bargain. You can get a sense of AiAiAi's impetus for yourself in a video after the break.

VLC 2.02 adds Retina display support, ditches font cache interruptions http://bit.ly/OWLrZZ
The latest version of everyone's favorite file-type-friendly media player has been updated on both Windows and OS X, although the Apple iteration gets the most major addition -- playback support on the new MacBook Pro's Retina display. Alongside sharper menus, VLC's latest update extends functionality to the video itself, maintaining crispness on smaller viewing windows and even fully-blow 4K video. Good news on all platforms though, as the developers have now nixed that grating "building font cache" pop-up window. Smaller changes include support for Growl and the return of the "keep aspect ratio" option. Hit up the changelog for a full run-down of the other changes.
