The Lifetime of a Star
A millennium of travel
An infinite universe of time
A second of your life
A star looks upon you
It winks with wicked glee
I have found you
And fades out of existence
Alone you stand,
Mourning what once was
A blink of hope
Across the universe
Nothing pierced by a ray of light
That once a star spent its life
On the path to your eyes
A relentless pursuit of one moment.
Forever.
To gave upon you.

Life is The Night’s Sky
Life is the night’s sky
Dotted with a million specks of light
Stars scattered across the universe
Hope found in the fragments of broken hearts
A canvas of darkness
An endless sea of existence
It is brimming with a million specks of light
Once a month, a full moon
Bringing a glow to the darkest night.

The Universe
This light has traveled for thousands and thousands of years
across the universe
To shine on you for one second.
You say you don’t matter.
Your very existence molds the time-space continuum.
You, my dear
physically shape the universe.

Monsters
Perhaps there never had been any monsters?
Perhaps we are the monsters?
There is no perhaps to that thought my dear.
We are the monsters.

The Sin of Virtue
The perfect embodiment of male entitlement,
of false virtue.
You deem yourself a saint,
You speak of honor and Truth
Carry God’s name on your tongue,
You lower your eyes in mock modesty
in truth,
Masking the flaws of selfishness.
You are the devil cloaked in white
a Sin upon my heart
The feathers char where they touch you,
but if I get close enough to see,
I have stepped into the ring of fire
And I will go up in flames.

Evil
Down a narrow road I go,
a path to hell I seek.
I close my eyes and hear
the wails of dead men
agonizing wounds that bleed,
red streams from veins beneath my feet.
I open my eyes.
The monsters are all gone,
the war has been won
they say.
But around every corner,
smoke I see
and trenches dug eye deep.
A looming black shadow
engulfs me at night,
together we weep.
I open my eyes,
sparkling young stars gaze back at me.
They do not see the ghosts I do,
they have not seen what true evil can do.

dark academia literary works: a masterlist
Hello! I replied to this post on Reddit today, trying to compile all the dark academia books I could think of, and then thought that maybe all of you here might find it useful too, so here you go. It is a very, very broad list, a mix of classic and contemporary literature, and there is no set criteria besides having a dark vibe (this includes murder and crime but could just be the way it’s written as well) and portraying an academic setting, most of the time from the student’s point of view. I haven’t read all of these myself and so I can’t judge on quality, but hopefully this will inspire people to add on to it in the comments.
Here you go!
The Lessons by Naomi Alderman Truly, Devious by Maureen Johnson The Secret History, Donna Tartt If We Were Villains by M. L. Rio Maurice by E. M. Forster The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde Possession by A.S. Byatt The Truants by Kate Weinberg The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie by Muriel Spark Vicious by V. E. Schwab The Raven Cycle by Maggie Stiefvater (tangentially related) A Little Life, Hanya Yanagihara Brideshead Revisited by Evelyn Waugh Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro The Likeness by Tana French The Rachel Papers by Martin Amis Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo (coming out tomorrow!) Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë The Lake of Dead Languages by Carol Goodman Oleanna by David Mamet Special Topics in Calamity Physics by Marisha Pessl The Marriage Plot by Jeffrey Eugenides
Other classics that are not Dark Academia in content, but which I would include in a list of the DA canon: The Iliad and The Odyssey by Homer Shakespeare’s plays (Macbeth, Hamlet are good ones to start with) A Separate Peace, John Knowles The Bacchae, Euripides Greek tragedies (a good one to start with is Antigone, very popular and staged many a time) Leaves of Grass by Walt Whitman Beat generation literature Jane Austen’s books (light academia, anyone?)

top reason my flatmates and i reached peak dark academia.
hallways covered in bookshelves. about two thousands books paving the way to our rooms.
falling asleep early enough to still hear someone typing their essay in the living room, but late enough into the night so that the birds’ singing will accompany you to your dreams.
tea being drunk by the pot. coming back from classes and knowing there will be a stimming cup waiting for you.
joking through latin quotes and obscure references to literature.
wild parties. opera blaring through the windows, growing into classical music, centuries old songs, and chanted poetry. dancing as if possessed by forgotten spirits. wild movements, skin covered in screaming, painted exclamations. leaving the alcohol behind and getting drunk on life instead.
one of my roommates’ door opening and closing through the night as he leaves the flat to walk through the sleeping city.
another one running into the living room, taking one unique leaf from a potted plant and leaving right away, only to send us pictures of its cells a few minutes later.
heated debates over books and historical events.
getting high on the toxic fumes inhaled during labs.
walks into the woods, howling poetry at the wind, hands cold and feet wet, getting lost further and further down a path of mushrooms.
breaking into the abandoned greenhouses to steal flowerpots, old biology notes and a mysterious painting.
discussing the best ways to murder someone, including through our study of mushrooms.
drinking games including the improvisation of poems and dancing the waltz.

pretty shitty how baseline human activities like singing, dancing and making art got turned into skills  instead of being seen as behaviors
so now it’s like ‘the point of doing them is to get good at them’ and not ‘this is a thing humans do, the way birds sing and bees make hives’.

i really really mean it please write muslim characters, it’s really not that daunting literally all you have to do is throw in a few casual qualities.
have them squint uncertainly at the meat options in a restaurant and ask if there’s pork in the sandwich. have them mention on the phone “oh, i’m gonna stop by the mosque first for prayer but i’ll be there soon.” have your hijabi girls squeal over cute scarves in mall store windows and swoon over sparkly pins. have them kindly reject a glass of water and say “oh, i’m fasting today.”
just don’t make their religion their only defining aspect. like??
for most women, wearing hijab is about as casual as wearing a shirt or pants. give me a badass woman on a mission to save the world just like you’d write literally any other badass woman on a mission to save the world— this one just happens to keep her hair in a headscarf and is careful not to eat certain foods?
and not all muslim women wear scarves, a lot of them just choose not to or they decide not right now but they’ll do it later? like, give me a girl who’s absolutely determined to break a world record and halfway through the story she shows up in a headscarf for the first time and it’s no big deal.
give me a kid who’s on the search for an ancient magical artifact and also they get anxious at some point cause they’re busy but prayer’s gonna start soon and they don’t wanna miss it. have them whip out their phone and search for the nearest mosque. have them find some quiet place to pray alone, like in the corner of a hotel room they just booked while their travel companion’s watching TV with the volume turned down low.
just?? do a bit of research (when are the prayer times, when is ramadan, what are halal foods, mosques in texas, etc.) and write!!! muslim!!! characters!!!
