Kyrgios on Top Rivals and Question for Alcaraz
The 2022 Wimbledon finalist answered a wide range of questions on Instagram. By Richard Pagliaro | @Tennis_Now | Friday, July 28, 2023 Some of Nick Kyrgios' fiercest feuds are his favorite rivals. The 2022 Wimbledon finalist responded to a wide array of questions from his followers on Instagram. More: Twitter Reacts to Alcaraz's Amazing Wimbledon Win Asked to name his top rivals on tour, Kyrgios replied: "My big rivals on the circuit? Tsitsipas, Nadal and Wawrinka."
        View this post on Instagram
A post shared by Nick Kyrgios (@k1ngkyrg1os)
The mercurial Kyrgios rode his massive serve and major mind games to topple fourth-seeded Tsitsipas 6-7(2), 6-4, 6-3, 7-6(7) in a wild, crazy and contentious clash at the 2022 Wimbledon. Both men were hit with code violations as Court No. 1 felt like the octagon at times. Tsitsipas summed up this tennis tempest of sound and flurry as "a circus." The match saw Kyrgios deploy the underarm tweener serve, some superb drop shots and near constant chatter that unnerved Tsitsipas. The Greek, who belted a ball into the stands and splattered another shot off the back wall, spent a few games trying to tag Kyrgios and eventually accomplished his mission drilling the Aussie in the chest. Tsitsipas later blasted Kyrgios as "a bully" with Kyrgios countering the Greek is "not liked." Last summer, Kyrgios was on course for a Wimbledon semifinal showdown with Nadal when the Spanish superstar was forced out of The Championships after suffering a seven millimeter tear in his abdominal. Had their third Wimbledon clash come off, Kyrgios felt it would have been one of the most watched matches of all time given their prior, sometime contentious clashes, including Kyrgios conceding he tried to nail Nadal in the chest with a passing shot.
youtube
“We've had some absolute battles on that Centre Court. He's won one against me, and I've won one against him," Kyrgios said of Nadal. “Obviously, we know, two completely different personalities. "I feel like we respect the hell out of each other, though. I feel like that would be a mouth-watering kind of encounter for everyone around the world. That would probably be the most-watched match of all time. I would argue that.” Nadal is 6-3 lifetime vs. Kyrgios, who famously upset the king of clay in his 2014 Wimbledon debut before the Spaniard avenged that loss with a 2019 second-round win that spanned four sets. "The circuit will be better when Nadal and I are back," Kyrgios said in his Instagram Q&A. In his Montreal win over Wawrinka years back, Kyrgios made a crude comment about WTA star Donna Vekic, who was dating Wawrinka at the time, on court. Later, the pair reportedly nearly came to blows in the locker room before coaches and players separated them.
youtube
Asked about facing Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz in the future, Kyrgios praised the world No. 1 then posed a challenge question to the two-time Grand Slam champion. "He is a force for sure," Kyrgios said of Alcaraz."I would have loved to see how it would of gone down last year when I was healthy and playing lights out... "@CarlosAlcaraz what about next year in your town we do an exhibition?" Photo credit: Rob Newell/CameraSport  from Blog RSS https://ift.tt/YREfdVL

Bolivian Official Suspended 12 Years for Corruption
Percy Flores has been suspended for 12 years and issued a $15,000 fine for multiple violations of the anti-corruption program. By Alberto Amalfi | @Tennis_Now | Friday, July 28, 2023 A Bolivian chair umpire will take a seat on the sidelines for more than a decade after committing multiple acts of corruption. Percy Flores has been suspended from tennis for 12 years and fined $15,000 for multiple breaches of the Tennis Anti-Corruption Program (TACP), the International Tennis Integrity Agency announced today. More: Twitter Reacts to Alcaraz's Amazing Wimbledon Win Flores, a white badge umpire who did not contest the ITIA’s charges, committed 31 breaches of the TACP between November 2021 and October 2022. The violations included routine manipulation of scores for betting purposes—by purposely entering the wrong score into the umpire’s handheld device – at ITF World Tennis Tour events and soliciting another official to engage in corrupt conduct.
youtube
Anti-Corruption Hearing Officer Professor Richard McLaren ruled Flores’ breaches of the TACP merited a sanction of 15 years in accordance with sanctioning guidelines, but applied a reduction of three years’ suspension due to mitigating circumstances—including the umpire’s early admission of the charges and general good conduct during the investigative process. The suspension was backdated to the start of Flores’ provisional suspension on December 8, 2022 and will end on December 7, 2034. During this time Flores is banned from officiating at or attending any tennis event authorized or sanctioned by the governing bodies of tennis. After Receiving Blowback from WTA Veterans, Amarissa Toth Apologizes to Zhang Shuai
The 20-year-old got her first WTA win against Zhang, and that wasn't all By Chris Oddo | @TheFanChild | Friday July 20, 2023 After inspiring so much backlash for her actions during a controversial match against China’s Zhang Shuai, Hungary’s Amarissa Toth has apologized for her actions, and to the Chinese veteran. For those not familiar with the situation, Toth was called out on social media by many WTA players for her behavior, when she celebrated her victory against Shuai, who retired after a bizarre incident that left her in tears. During said bizarre incident, Shuai challenged what she felt was an incorrect judgment of a ball mark by the umpire, and vehemently asked for the call to be overruled. More: Zhang Controversy, and Teary Retirement, Draws Support from Peers Toth seemed to take pleasure in brushing away the mark a few points later. Even if the call was already set in stone, her gesture was done to rile up Zhang, and it worked. The Chinese would retire from the match at the conclusion of the game, at which time Toth raised her arms in triumph. Yesterday the tournament posted a message of apology from Toth.
Amarissa Toth has shared a video in which she apologizes for what happened with Shuai Zhang a couple of days ago, saying that she shouldn't have behaved in that way, and that she respects Shuai as a person and athlete.pic.twitter.com/TktSTPEko2

“I did not think that my first WTA success would cause such a big storm, and I’m extremely sorry for what happened,” Toth said in a video posted on the tournament’s official Instagram account. “I respect Zhang Shuai as a person just as much as an athlete. It was never my intention to disrespect, upset, or hurt anyone—least of all Zhang Shuai. “I do realize I should not have celebrated the way I celebrated after the match, and I’m sorry for that. I got caught up in my emotions and in the heat of the match, and I got caught up by the moment. I focused on tennis, and I didn’t want to win like that. I hope that, in the future, I will have the opportunity to sit down and talk with Zhang Shuai and tell how badly I feel that our match ended this way. “I hope that Shuai Zhang feels better and that we will soon see her back because she’s an unbelievable player, very respectful and a great person. There is a lot to learn from her, and we should all stay respectful to each other no matter what.” Zhang, a 34-year-old veteran has been struggling with personal issues and burnout of late. She is a well-loved player on tour amongst her peers, and Toth’s actions on that day did not sit well with them. They let her know on social media, and the 20-year-old let them know that she was listening. A hard lesson, but one learned. from Blog RSS https://ift.tt/DmqRycJ
