Since the start of the pandemic, most indoor spaces demand that people wear mask. I chose to do a poster that reminds people to wear their mask.
This pandemic is similar to a war in the way that everybody is aware of what is going on and everybody has a responsibility. In that sense, my slogan is inspired from the famous poster used by the U.S. Army during the World War II where Uncle Sam ask people to join the army with the slogan: I want you for U.S. Army. I decided to reuse the same expression and turn it into “We want you to wear a mask”. Because the purpose of this poster is to draw the attention of people, I wanted it to have vibrant colors and a typography that is loud (bold lettering) and clear.
Knowing that the slogan is an essential part in this poster particularly (to lay the message effectively), I did not want my poster to be just a slogan, since it is not entertaining to watch. This is why I chose to not write the word “mask” and show a real mask instead. Also, to imitate the Uncle Sam recruitment poster, I added the hand pointing at “you”. My poster has a minimalistic style, so I made the pointing hand in the same style as the “wash your hands” signs. I wanted to draw the attention on the mask and the “you”. Therefore, I used orange as the background because it is the complementary colour of blue and it would make the mask, the pointing hand and “you” stand out. When you have people going by your poster for only 0.4 seconds, it is important to make people focus on the important part of your message. Even someone who does not read well could understand this poster.
To create this poster, I used the pen tool, the rectangle and line segment tool, and the type tool. I used the pen tool to make the strings of the mask, the rectangle tool to make most of the mask and the pointing hand, the line segment tool to make the dotted line and the folds of the mask, the type tool to write the slogan. I used the “Impact” font because I found it the most effective to display a loud and clear message.

Running Man Under the Rain
The running man in the sculpture is built with two “Y” that I have put upside down. Then, I used the direct selection tool to shrink the tail (head), spread the branches (arms), thicken the tail (upper body), and deform the branches, transforming them into running legs. The contour of the cloud is built with “Y” aligned. I used the “type on a path” tool to do it. The cloud itself is built with a mass of “Y”. To create the mass, I copied and pasted a lot of “Y” and then I changed their orientation, to make it look messy. The raindrops are “Y” which I changed orientation to create a “wind effect”. After all that, I put a purple rectangle over eveything, and I set it to the back to be the background.
I chose to set my running man font on red because I figured it would make a strong contrast with the blue of the storm. The background is purple because it is the mix of red and blue.

The Paths
To create this sculpture, I started by putting a big “Y” in the middle of the sheet. Then, I modified it with the direct selection tool to make it look like a sinuous path junction. After that, I created a mass of “Y” forming an arrow, as if all the little green “Y” were part of an organisation following each other. I copied the arrow and then oriented them as if they were following the flow of the path. I decided to put the little red “Y” (that I turned upside down) alone on the other path. The color choice is not made by chance. This sculpture is a metaphor of our society. It is free to interpretation.

Black & White Sculpture
Portrait
Firstly, I create the eyes. I orientate a “Y” horizontally, copy it, and use the vertical mirror tool on the copy, so they face each other. After that, I use the direct selection tool and expand the tail on the right “Y” and shrink it on the left “Y”. I copy and paste this construction and I use the vertical mirror effect on the copied construction. Finally, I position those two eyes at the same height.
Secondly, I create the nose. I use the horizontal mirror tool to put the “Y” upside down, the direct selection tool to make the two lower branches bigger and the corners round.
Thirdly, I create the mouth. Similarly, to what I did with the eyes, I orientate a “Y” horizontally, but then, I modify it to make the first half of the mouth: I shrink the tail, expand the two branches and make the extremity of the branches pointy. Then, I copy it and use the vertical mirror tool on the copy. Finally, I make adjustment on both “Y” to make the mouth (kind of) look like a human one.
Finally, I put Y on the 4 corner of my sheet and rotate them, so the branches are aiming towards the nose. I use the direct selection tool to modify them and make the shape of the face and the neck.

Pattern
This sculpture has 2 patterns in it: the 91pt “Y” chain and the 45pt “Y” chain. The way I assembled the chain is simple. First, I copied the second Y based on the first and I used the horizontal mirror tool to join the two by the tail. Then, I copy and paste these two and join the others with it until I have a full line. But before I copy this whole line of 91pt “Y”, I do the 45pt line and adjust it, so it is at the intersection of the 91pt “Y” branches. After I do these two main lines, I copy and paste it and place the others next to my main ones to create the whole pattern.
