Embrace
Tumblr media
This piece was made by tying wool to some dried ivy I collected. I find the shapes of the ivy vine very beautiful and the curvatures of the branches coming together reminded me of an embrace between two people. In my mind was also nesting of birds and the processes the birds go of balancing twigs together to form a structure without any aids apart from the twigs. By binding the two pieces of ivy I mimicked this and created one piece from two. Using just the wool the pieces became so close that they were able to balance on their own. I added some bits of lavender to try and replicate the feeling and fragrances I had while creating the piece but I did not add enough for the scent to be obvious. An issue with the display of this piece as I did not create a stand for it so it toppled over.

Lost Connection Film
For the ‘Electronic Ecosystem’ exhibition I made a film in collaboration with Maisie Moon. Three films were shown next to each other, showing images of the environment and phones. The videos were timed up to match up at certain points which gave a power visual feel. The idea was to show the ignorance we show towards the environment and how the connection between modern life and nature has in many places been lost.
This video was the first time which I edited a video and although still very much a novice I found it enjoyable. It is definitely a skill I want to improve upon that I can utilise in my future practice. It was also a lesson in setting up and gathering necessary equipment for an exhibition. I am making it a goal to help with more exhibitions during the course.

Why ‘O Why a Fly?
The thoughts/feelings provoked by a fly:
repulsion
disgust
tension
annoyance
fear (in extreme cases)
Flies are dirty pests and when we see them we want to get rid of them as fast as possible and generally have little care if they live or die if the proceedings. Then is a certain tickle on the skin and chill down the spine when one sees a fly. A frustration when a fly lurks around your food on a summers day. A churn forms in your stomach when you go to a shop and the fruit hidden beneath a swarm of flies. They are repulsive to humans. This can be due to biological facts flies love decomposing food and shit so they carry the diseases from them all around and naturally we protect ourselves from these diseases.
But, I would like to look at things from the fly’s perspective it seems they have a rather hard deal. They’re just trying to get by buzzing around your home. Are they really causing such harm that you must set traps and attack them whenever the chance arises. What if they just want to be friends? Poor naive little fly doesn't understand why no body wants to play with them. Keeps running into trouble.

ant farm building pics
The ants require moisture so a waterproof environment was needed for them it also had to be escape proof, allow in air and have a lid in which their food could be put into. With the help from Justin in woodwork we planned out two cassettes one for the nest and one outerworld to feed the ants connected by a tube. We started by working out the dimensions and then cutting the wood using a programmed machine. Then it was time to waterproof using a recommended by ant forums spray on sealant. To stick the pieces together we used Aquasafe silicone and a nail gun.
