Martin Van Maele, La Sorciere
What I find most interesting is the prehistoric temple in the background. Despite the Church’s influence, worship at these prehistoric temples remained very popular with the rural community. As a result, the Church regarded these ancient places with suspicion and decalred they were place of evil. In fact, word villain (n.) actually developed from the Latin villa “country house -” Medieval Latin villanus “farmhand,” then to Old French villain, then to Anglo-French meaning ‘base or low-born rustic’ c.1300.
