All Calved Out
Finally a break in the action of calving season. Calving season is one of the most time consuming and stressful times of the year and it is finally starting to wind down. When it finally starts to slow down you can take a deep breath and be able to relax for a little before the next part of your cattle ranch. The nice thing about being down with calving you are able to see how your breeding choices from last summer turned out. Its always fun to see the new babies and how they look, as they are your next set of calves that you will be selling this fall. When you are all calved out you are starting to pick your new breeding choices, and set you up for getting ready of a quick summer to sell in the fall.

Whats going on with my cow herd?
I have started to count down the days until calving starts for me. Its that time of year where I am getting all of my calving facilities set up, and starting to watch my cows more closely. My heifers should be calving first as they were bred before my mature cows. I will be having Angus cross calves this year, and will also have some clubby bred calves born this year. I am hoping for a healthy calf crop this year with more heifer calves than bull calves as I need to replace some older cows next year. I am extremely excited for this years calf crop as I am able to see if my breeding choices I made last spring/summer will pay off.

Calving Season
Every year in the cattle business you get to experience the joys of calving. Calving is one of the biggest events within the industry as it is when you are obviously getting a new calf crop and you are able to see how your breeding selections turned out.Calving is not an easy part and is a very grueling task as you are up for countless hours and have so many new bodies to take care of. When calving you are up for so many hours as you cows calve around the clock. Many operations do what is called spring calving which basically starts in January and goes through may. A lot of purebred operations that sell whats called seed stock like to calve in January and February as it helps set up and make the offspring born during that time be older come breeding season. However their are also operations that do fall calving. Selecting a calving season all depends on when you breed your cows, when you want to calve do to weather and season situations, it also depends on what you are trying to achieve as an operation. The commercial cow man may want to calve later spring as they might possibly have a higher survival rate do to weather conditions. The person that raises show calves also calve in different parts of the year as they are trying to raise calves for different clients and different shows. Calving season is a great time of year and has many opportunities as it sets up your future for your herd.

Welcome
My name is Clay Hiser. I’m from an agricultural based family here in Wyoming. My family has been heavily involved in the cattle business and we have raised cattle for many years. As I attend college and type this blog I have started to think about my future and what I want to do. I have started to realize that I want to keep doing the family tradition of raising cattle. My plan is to raise cattle on the commercial, purebred, and show spectrum of the industry.I have clearly realized what you have to do to be successful in the cattle business and the everyday life that comes with cattle. This blog is going to cover all parts of the cattle industry, as well as having personal updates on what I am doing with my cattle as well. The cattle life is the life for me.
