Social Media in Times of Tragedy
From the Boston marathon bombing to the mass shooting in Las Vegas and everything before, after, and in between; what to say and how to handle emotions in that time of tragedy is already tricky. It can especially play a detrimental effect to businesses if it is not handled appropriately.
Seeing as how social media is a huge platform for businesses to advertise and engage with their consumers, it can just as quickly ruin the brand reputation they worked so hard to build. So, should brands/organizations engage?
the answer is YES! (if you throw a little common sense and empathy in there)
-All actions and posts a business makes should steer clear of any self-serving posts, it’s insensitive and offensive.
- Don’t make specific statements (details) about what happened. Your brand is an objective third party with no reason to report the news, only to support those who are affected directly and indirectly.
-Make a tailored statement if your brand or organization has ties to the tragic event.
-If you do release a brand statement, make the message as broad and positive as possible.
Brands and different organizations have the chance to empower, heal, and connect those in times of hurt. Be the brand your consumers are proud to use and will continue to use!

Exercise #4 - Influencers
Madison Mealy
This influencer is a young mom who lives around Tampa, FL who previously lived in Hawaii with her husband. She's an influencer because her posts are extremely relatable while her pictures are also perfect and what one would describe as “living the dream”. Her followers are younger females and also young moms. Before she became a mom (which was recently), she posted pics from her everyday life. Now, the brands she mostly promotes are baby related or workout related. Influencers like herself are so important because they help their followers realize they aren’t alone in everyday struggles. Influencers can relate to their followers/audience in a way that traditional social media ads cannot because you see a face and follow the life of this influencer, you are connected on a personal level and it makes it easier to the followers to make a connection.

Unwired Day
February 22, 2019 ———
“Unwiring” from technology as a whole for a day was eye opening and refreshing to say the least!
Over the 24 hour period, I only truly found myself wanting to plug into social media to see what was going on, or watch tv when my child was napping. Being a new mom, you realize quick how demanding a little human can be, consuming most of your time anyways, so abstaining from social media for a day wasn’t as big of a challenge as I thought it would be.
Unwiring from social media for a day allowed me to truly focus on the people around and appreciate the little things associated with that, especially when it comes to my son. It allowed me to have my 100% focus on my child, and I know he loved it too! I think it’s important for people to unplug every now and then and live in the moment, you don’t realize how much you’re missing until you really give it a try!
