Nothing like checking out yu yu hakusho tag because your sister is rewatching the episodes on Netflix and tripping over the cliff you didn't see and falling for Yusuhi and Kuwama
Please. I want to cry about them now

I still want do train drawing a couple guys from time to time and Hiei felt like a good pick to me! I never drew anything for YYH while I was reading the manga, so it's really nice to finaly make something from it.

Little Yusuke and Hiei piece back from last March! And a little drabble under the cut too :3c 💕
Yusuke’s calloused thumb rubbed away the blood from his cheek, another precious token of their latest spar.
The gentleness of the gesture made Hiei dizzy and he couldn’t help but stare at the closeness of Yusuke’s face, stitching in his wide grin, hair disheveled and damp with sweat. Laughter cackled out of him like thunder, spilling into the short distance between them as Hiei felt Yusuke’s fingers start to tangle into his hair. It made his chest heave and his breath suddenly became impossible to find. The feeling was…odd. Disturbing was what he first called it. Frustrating following soon after. But now it was…?
Hiei felt Yusuke’s fingers gently hold onto his other arm. The subtle dig of his index made the demon feel like he was losing grip. Yusuke was talking to him? Still half-laughing. What was he saying?
Hiei couldn’t parse any of the words, his brain too full of memorizing the Detective’s face and the steady awareness that his ears felt like they were burning from the thumb against them. His grip on Yusuke’s shirt tightened and his head felt heavy, slowly stooping forward. Hiei tried to gather some modicum of thought as another inch shrank between their noses, but any chance was cast away the moment Yusuke’s face rose to meet his.

I’m struggling to articulate it but I’ve been rewatching Yu Yu Hakusho and that scene where Yusuke is on the brink of death in the cave and Pu starts trying to bring him water just hits so hard now after having battled feelings of worthlessness and self hatred since I last saw the show.
The idea that he’s about to give up and die before this goofy little animal representing his soul starts trying to take care of him. Despite the fact that it’s suffering just as much as he is, it can’t bear to see him in pain. And the fact that what finally forces Yusuke to power through the trial is his unwillingness to let Pu die because of him. In the end what gives Yusuke the resolve to live isn’t the usual trope of the power of friendship, but instead it’s his body and his soul both doing their best to be kind and take care of each other.
It’s a bit on the nose, sure, but it really did feel like a profound statement about the importance self-love, especially knowing now that Yoshihiro Togashi has had to battle his own feelings of inadequacy due to his health.

I know it's not actually this deep and is mostly just a case of a shonen battle manga being allergic to consequences, but I find it poignant that the heroic sacrifices in Yu Yu Hakusho never stick and rarely even work. That every character who tries to die for a noble cause end up living on and do far more good later in their life than if they had died there.
It's just nice for a show so deeply rooted in death to consistently assert that dying for something isn't the answer.

yu yu hakusho main 4 ensemble team is so funny
yusuke is some loner "no good punk" who doesnt get along with anyone other than his one (1) singular best friend, he beats the shit out of kuwabara and accidentally starts a (one sided) rivalry where kuwabara tries to beat him, he almost dies for kurama after knowing him for like 10 minutes and then gets saved by kurama taking a hit for him and he has literally no reason to trust hiei but does anyway, everyone at his school is scared of him, he literally befriends half the people that he fights
kuwabara is a self proclaimed thug but is actually really soft and loves his friends, he'd do anything for the people he cares about, he's rivals with yusuke, he literally does not know hiei or kurama he found out his rival is some spirit detective guy and just started showing up too, he has no clue wtf hiei is but he knows he's annoying, he's literally down to die at any moment for his friends and random ass strangers
kurama is The Main Man at his high school, he has zero friends unless u count hiei, he only cares about his mom, he's smart and popular and quiet, he's a fox demon thief, he trauma dumps on yusuke after knowing him for like 10 minutes, is ready to die for his mom, is told that death isnt the way to go, immediately takes a hit for yusuke by his own kinda friend hiei, moves the fuck on immediately, hiei and him are besties again, random men have homoerotic beef with him but he literally only cares about his mom and his friends
hiei is a literal criminal, he does not like humans, he has attempted to murder yusuke but is still unwaveringly trusted by him and is probably half always there out of sheer confusion, he's ready to kill anyone, he'd kill anyone for his friends, he regularly gets teased for his height and long lost sister, no one takes his emo comments seriously, he was literally yeeted off a cliff when he was a newborn
on the outside its the top student of his school, a no good punk, a terrifying loner, and an actual criminal
