‘80s kids will quickly recognize the face of the F40PH, the inveterate poster child of North American passenger railroading’s first generation as a government endeavor. VIA’s fleet was newer than Amtrak’s, and owing to that and less demanding service most of VIA’s F40s are still on the road today, hauling slower non-corridor trains like the Canadian. The hump over the rear door is for a Caterpillar HEP generator set, which allows VIA’s F40s to idle without the characteristic scream, and also allows more power to go to the wheels.
