I was clicking a Purple Moorhen (or whatever it's called these days) from a boat in the middle of sorghum fields. The crop was planted on a patch of land that's submerged under water between the months of July and March. This is the reservoir of the Ujjani dam. Its water levels begin to recede at the advent of summer, in March, and islands begin to appear. Farmers cultivate different types of crops on this land - that's otherwise under water. The islands start disappearing once again when the monsoons arrive in June, and the dam water is released into the reservoir. By August very few islands have their surfaces above water. Farmers lose parts of their crops which are closer to the shore - they're always aware of this risk. But the grains don't go to waste - birds such as baya weavers, tricolour, scaly-breasted, and red munias feed on the grains, and birds such as common coots and moorhens nest in the midst of the dying crop. In a few days time, more water will be released and this wilting crop will be completely submerged under water. In fact the water levels will rise to about 15 feet above the level it is at presently. I clicked this picture in the month of November. It was a unique situation because we had some unseasonal rainfall. As a result we had some fresh monsoon foliage. And in all my time, I’ve spent many-many hours photographing birds here in Kumbhargaon, but I’ve never seen, or at least I don’t remember seeing foliage like this. I clicked these pictures with the Nikon D500 camera and the 200-500 lens. The 500mm lens was important. I needed that reach that the 500mm lens gave me in order to get closer… a more magnified picture of these birds as compared to say a 400mm lens, would have just not been enough to define the bird like this picture does. So that’s where, I think, Nikon has an edge over Canon.
