Person: My goodness! This generation will have no social skills! They spend all their time on social media!
Me: ummm...
Me: ... it's just...
Me: ... do you know what the word 'social' means?

[Jessicametas:]
Person: People don't communicate anymore. They spend all their time looking at their phones.
Me: ... don't you realise people use their phones to communicate?

Yeah, that's because it's a converstaion post. They aren't designed for people to add stuff too. You used to be able to change them to text posts if you really wanted, but apparently that's not an option anymore.
(I feel like there's something either ironic or meta about us discussing how to social in this medium in this context.]

This is a pure expression of the conservative doctrine of federalism: States handle things better than the feds because they are closer to the people. But then came the debacle in Flint, when Michigan authorities embraced cost-saving changes in the city’s water supply and caused mass lead poisoning. Now members of Congress are blaming the EPA for failing to stop the problem — oblivious to the irony that they and their predecessors were the ones who denied the federal government the ability to enforce drinking-water standards in the first place.
The poisonous conservative thinking that caused the Flint crisis
See, this is what they do: they defund and obstruct and wreck the government we pay for, and then they complain that government doesn’t work, so they are the only ones who can be trusted to fix it … by cutting taxes and regulations and obstructing anyone who fights it.
And they never pay a political price, they never lose elections because of it, the Democrats don’t explicitly call them out on it nearly enough (or run elections based on conservative failure), and nothing ever changes.
And nothing ever changes because this sort of failure only hurts and kills the poor, and the vast majority of government doesn’t give a flying fuck about the poor.

By whitewashing the poorest district in Panem, the the filmmakers successfully depoliticized the story. They removed any possibility of Panem being a racist country, of poverty and race somehow being related. Sure, Rue was still black, but Katniss was white. White people are just as oppressed as people of color, therefore race isn’t an issue in Panem. Race is taken out of the equation. Why not just make the tagline #AllLivesMatter? And even though people of color suffer alongside white people, it’s white people whose narratives we follow, white people who are allowed complexity and sympathy, and white people who are allowed to survive in the end… The Hunger Games is successful as a franchise because it doesn’t force us to think. By removing racism from the equation, it gives us an easy, non-controversial image of oppression. Oppression is a bad thing done by bad people. It’s sad, it’s hard to watch, and innocent people die, but uncomfortable things like racism are never brought up. It doesn’t explore why social inequality and poverty exist, they just do. Never mind that in Mississippi, the infant mortality rate exceeds that of Botswana, and that black infants are almost twice as likely as white infants to die. Never mind that black and brown people are more likely to be housed in environmentally-hazardous areas, where they’re exposed to dangerous materials more than the average, middle-class white person. No, never mind these things, because they make us uncomfortable, and we don’t want to be uncomfortable when we go see a movie. We want to be entertained. And oppression is only entertaining when the oppressed are conventionally-attractive white people. In a strange way, The Hunger Games has become a parody of itself. It’s gone from the story of a young woman of color rising up against a racist, totalitarian society and struggling with PTSD, to a glamorized, monetized spectacle in which millions of dollars have been invested. The Capitol didn’t watch simply for the death, it watched for the drama, the star-crossed lovers of District 12, the suffering and betrayal. And we in our own way are the Capitol, consuming the deaths of innocent people for our own entertainment, declaring ourselves “Team Peeta” or “Team Gale,” buying makeup from Covergirl’s Capitol Collection, turning a story of resistance into an extravagant spectacle to be marketed and sold like anything else in a capitalist society. Just as the Capitol watches for the drama, so do we. And I think part of that is inevitable in storytelling. But part of it is also preventable. We are a country founded on genocide, slave labor, and police brutality. We’re not in danger of becoming Panem; we have always been Panem.

About the Deadpool Theater Incident
Okay, I’m re-posting this because it’s going to get buried in the actual massive thread of reblogs, which is up to 70k.
Here’s what happened. I mentioned that while I was in line to get tickets and popcorn at my local teeny town theater, the guy next to me started explaining who Deadpool was, because he just assumed I wouldn’t know.
I thought it was kind of funny, I didn’t think it was ‘mansplaining’ or the patriarchy or any of that stuff, it was a guy excited to see his favorite hero in a movie and he had no idea that I had written the character and actually have an on-camera shout-out.
I tweeted it because I thought it was kind of cute, I never thought the guy was an ass or a jerk or that he was being a douche, he was just excited. At the very WORST, he just made an assumption. I posted many times that I didn’t think it was sexist, and I didn’t think it was even REMOTELY a big deal, AND I posted a story where I had made a very similar mistake myself with an artist I really respected.
This was NOT a big deal. I thought it was cute and if I’d had some Deadpool comics with me, I would have happily given them to the dude.
Anyway, now it’s up here with this huge thread of tens of thousands of reblogs under a headline about sexism, and I have to say, I just never had that feeling for a moment, nor did this seem even remotely like a serious issue.
Here’s what I wrote on the thread.
“I just want to say, I think people are making a bigger deal of this than they should, to be honest. It’s not that he didn’t recognize me (why would he?) and it’s not that I thought he was ‘sexist.’  It was just a guy excited about Deadpool and he started telling the closest person in line.
I said a bunch of times after posting this tweet that I didn’t think he was being sexist, it just seemed kind of funny. I live in a tiny small town, there’s no reason for him to think someone who wrote Deadpool was in line with him. AND the few times I’ve told a guy who talked about the movie that I used to write the character, they were universally very positive and excited about it. Not one bad experience.
So, while it would be nice if people didn’t just ASSUME that a woman wouldn’t know who Deadpool was, I didn’t ever think it was this big deal, I just thought it was kind of funny that the ONE person he chose to explain Deadpool that day is actually given a shout-out in the movie. That struck me as kind of amusing.
He wasn’t being a dick, he just was excited about Deadpool, and assumed I wouldn’t know who Wade Wilson was. Not a big deal at all. “
Anyway, this was so inoffensive, I actually forgot it happened until something jogged my memory and I thought people might find it amusing. It was such an incredible non-issue! Deadpool fans have ALWAYS been incredibly nice to me, regardless of gender, I have always felt they were some of the kindest and most generous readers out there.
Also, dude, if you’re out there, I promise, I was NOT OFFENDED and I thought it was kind of adorable to see your excitement at your favorite hero getting a movie. Hope you enjoyed it as much as I did!

Medical droid: I mean the bad news is we did literally pull him from a volcano so his limbs are pretty fucked and he can't breathe right but the good news is we reckon we can sort that with a suit and a mask to get him extra oxygen
Palpatine: Okay cool. See while you're doing that, can you put a voice changer in it?
Medical droid: What
Palpatine: He sounds like a whiny little bitch I need you to make his voice deeper so people will take him seriously
Medical droid: I mean we could try but-
Palpatine: How are you gonna fix his limbs
Medical droid: We thought standard prosthetics would-
Palpatine: Make him 7 feet tall
Medical droid: ...right
Palpatine: Give him a cape
