In a showdown between two of the Atlantic Division’s best teams, the Toronto Maple Leafs prevailed over the Boston Bruins 4-3.
With 1:24 left in the game, Maple Leafs defensemen Ron Hainsey scored a controversial go-ahead goal to give the Leafs’ a 4-3 advantage over the Bruins. The goal was reviewed for goaltender interference but eventually was allowed.
After the game, NESN’s Jack Edwards and Andy Brickley discussed the wild game at Air Canada Centre.

Bruce Cassidy refuses to blame the referees for the Boston Bruins’ 4-3 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday.
Cassidy cited a lack of defensive effort as the main reason the Bruins fell short, but with a game Sunday against the Buffalo Sabres on deck, he and the rest of the team are ready to focus on getting back on a winning track.

The Boston Celtics limped into the NBA All-Star break, losing four of their five games heading into the league’s vacation.
But the C’s seem re-energized after their 10-day hiatus, as they followed up their 110-98 win over the Detroit Pistons on Friday with a 121-112 win over the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden on Saturday night thanks to Kyrie Irving’s near triple-double.
While the win wasn’t achieved the way the C’s would have liked, they were more than happy to get out of The Big Apple with a win after allowing the Knicks to shoot 46.9 percent from the field and tally 54 points in the paint.
Trey Burke and Tim Hardaway Jr. constantly beat Boston off the bounce, getting into the teeth of the C’s defense and wreaking havoc by either finishing at the rim or hitting a teammate for an easy bucket.
Despite Boston’s inability to play the way it wants to on the defensive end, head coach Brad Stevens was pleased with his team’s effort Saturday and during the first two games out of the break.
“The energy and the competitive spirit was back, all 96 minutes we’ve played this weekend,” Stevens said, as seen on NBC Sports Boston’s postgame coverage.
But while Stevens is happy with his team’s play this weekend, he noted they weren’t going to get caught up in wins over the Pistons and Knicks.
“We’re not in it for two games, we’re in it for the last 23, so we’ve just got to keep adding to it and building on it,” Stevens said
Boston looked like a shell of itself two weeks ago, but the much-needed rest appears to have brought one of the Eastern Conference’s best teams back to life.
Here are more notes from Celtics-Knicks:
— Stevens discussed Gordon Hayward’s rehab before the game, saying there is no plan for the star forward to return this season.
Brad Stevens repeated again that he doesn't expect Gordon Hayward to return this season.
— Jay King (@ByJayKing) February 24, 2018
— Terry Rozier now has scored in double figures in 10 consecutive games dating back to Jan. 31.
— This was the 17th game that Irving has scored 30 or more points.
— Al Horford joined Raef LaFrentz as the only two centers in Celtics history to record two seasons of 80 or more 3-point field goals. from NESN.com http://ift.tt/2ETVgVW http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

An absolute battle ended in sheer despair for the Boston Bruins on Saturday night.
In a back-and-forth affair with the Toronto Maple Leafs, B’s netminder Tuukka Rask turned away 32 shots, but he couldn’t stop the most important one, a Ron Hainsey one-timer from the point with 1:24 to play that gave Toronto the 4-3 victory.
That goal certainly wasn’t without incident.
As the Leafs worked the puck around the back of the net and up to the point, B’s defenseman Charlie McAvoy skated to the crease to protect the goal. There was a brief tussle while the puck was near the blue line that resulted in McAvoy getting shoved by Zach Hyman slightly onto Rask. By the time Rask skated across his crease after recovering, Hainsey’s puck was en route to the back of the net.

The Bruins challenged the call, but after a lengthy review, the original ruling stood.
Following the game, Rask was adamant that goaltender interference had taken place. And he made sure to express that with plenty of candor following the game.
“I don’t know what the argument was, if it was that (McAvoy) was interfering with me, yeah but, all I can say is that obviously, I would’ve stopped it (if not for perceived interference),” Rask said in the locker room following the game, as seen on NESN’s postgame coverage.
The 30-year-old was asked if it was frustrating that such a big grey area exists when it comes to goaltender interference, and while Rask didn’t necessarily answer that question directly, his stance was quite clear.
“I think it becomes frustrating if they start deciding games, you know? You battle 59 minutes, feel good about yourselves, and then it’s a (expletive) goal like that what decides the game. So that can be frustrating but luckily that hasn’t happened to us too often.”
Rask made sure to add one final time that he believed he was interfered with after being asked if he got a piece of his glove on the puck.
“No, I just couldn’t get there on time because, you know, somebody interfered with me.”
Rask bailed the Bruins out on multiple occasions, not to mention the fact that his teammates didn’t do him any favors on three of the four goals he allowed.
Nevertheless he has bounced back before, and with Anton Khudobin expected to start Sunday against the Buffalo Sabres, he will have a few days to get his mind right.
Here are some other notes from Bruins-Maple Leafs:
— Patrice Bergeron left the arena Saturday with a walking boot on, according to The Boston Herald’s Steve Conroy.
The B’s top-line center was hit with a puck during the second period, but he continued to play the remainder of the game. While his status for Sunday’s game in Buffalo is unclear, it is worth noting it will be the second game of a back-to-back and the second of four games over six days.
— As the B’s trip nears a close — with Sunday’s game marking the last of a five-game road swing — Jake DeBrusk finally tallied a much-deserved goal in Saturday’s loss that he had long been working for.
The rookie winger had four shots and was the best forward in last Saturday’s loss to the Vancouver Canucks, and he continued to grind it out despite not having many quality scoring opportunities in the ensuing pair of games.
However, the 21-year-old had three shots on net against the Maple Leafs, and with the goal he scored in the second period, he snapped a five-game point drought and 11-game goal drought. from NESN.com http://ift.tt/2Cif4oh http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

Saturday night served as a potential first-round preview of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, with the Atlantic Division’s second- and third-seeded teams — the Boston Bruins and Toronto Maple Leafs — squaring off at Air Canada Centre.
And if that does, in fact, turn out to be the matchup, boy are we in for a fun ride come mid-April.
The Maple Leafs ultimately secured the 4-3 win off a Ron Hainsey goal at 18:36 in the third period, the culmination of what was a wild night in Toronto.
Brad Marchand had a pair of goals for the Bruins, while Nazem Kadri tallied a pair of his own for the Toronto.
Tuukka Rask made 32 saves, while Maple Leafs netminder Frederik Andersen turned away 20 shots.
The B’s fall to 37-14-8 with the loss, while the Leafs climb to 39-20-5.
Here’s how it all went down:
BUSY OPENER Marchand had himself a quality first period, opening the scoring at 6:11 with a stellar wrister from the high slot off a feed from Patrice Bergeron.

The excitement was pretty short-lived, however.
Just over a minute later, William Nylander skated toward the sideboards in the offensive zone, then sent a beautiful cross-ice pass over to Mitch Marner, who finished easily with the net open.

After giving up the first goal, Toronto quickly continued its turnaround, claiming the lead just 3:15 after Marner’s goal.
Quality net-front presence from the Leafs paved the way for their second tally. Marner wristed a shot from the point, and James van Riemsdyk — who was right in front of Rask — got a piece of the puck, which went to the other post for Kadri, who finished without issue.

But just after entering the final five minutes of the first, Marchand scored his second tally of the night.
David Pastrnak — who, along with Patrice Bergeron, both had a pair of assists — showed some good fight on the end boards, fighting off Hainsey to gain control of the puck. The 21-year-old zipped it to Marchand, who was darting to the net with space and proceeded to sneak it past Andersen.

BOOKENDING GOALS Boston came out of the first intermission firing, taking a 3-2 lead just 1:55 into the middle period.
Ryan Spooner skated along the sideboards into the offensive zone, and after displaying some good composure with the puck, dashed it over to Jake DeBrusk, who was crashing toward the net. The 21-year-old finished with class, getting just enough stick onto the puck to flip it over Andersen.

But throughout the rest of the period, the Bruins were pushed to the limit. The Leafs finished the second period with a total of 27 shots for the game, making one of their final pucks on net count.
Marner and Kadri moved the puck back-and-forth well with one another, as the latter held firm in the high slot. Marner hit Kadri with one final pass, and the center one-timed it right past Rask.

LEAFS TALLY LATE WINNER The third period was everything the previous 40 minutes had been. It was physical, chaotic and filled with scoring opportunities. But as time wore down, neither team had broken through and scored a potential game-winner.
That all changed with 1:24 remaining, thanks to Hainsey.
The Leafs worked the puck around the goal and up to the point, and the blue-liner whacked a one-timer on net that got past Rask.

Boston challenged the play for goaltender interference, as Charlie McAvoy was pushed into Rask moments before the shot, but the officials didn’t think it was enough to impede Rask from being able to fairly get over to try and stop the shot.
UP NEXT The Bruins will play the second game of a road back-to-back Sunday against the Buffalo Sabres. Puck drop from KeyBank Center is set for 5:00 p.m. ET. from NESN.com http://ift.tt/2EU6A4r http://ift.tt/2blbUTE

Have no fear, Kyrie Irving is here.
The Boston Celtics didn’t have their best stuff Saturday night at Madison Square Garden, as the New York Knicks, without Kristaps Porzingis, gave the C’s all they could handle on the second night of a back-to-back.
While the C’s struggled on defense, especially containing penetration from Trey Burke and Tim Hardaway Jr., Irving notched a near-triple-double at the mecca of basketball, tallying 31 points, nine rebounds and eight assists in Boston’s 121-112 win.
Jaylen Brown (24 points), Terry Rozier (14 points), Al Horford (13 points), Jayson Tatum (11 points) and Marcus Smart (11 points) also scored in double figures for the C’s.
Burke led the Knicks with 24 points.
With the win, the Celtics improved to 42-19, while the Knicks fell to 24-37.
Here’s how it all went down:
STARTING FIVE PG: Kyrie Irving SG: Jaylen Brown SF: Jayson Tatum PF: Al Horford C: Daniel Theis
BURKE BLAST The Celtics and Knicks both struggled to take the lid off the hoop in the opening minutes, as Boston led 12-9 with under six minutes to play in the stanza. Brown would get it going, however, scoring seven of the Celtics’ next nine points to give Boston a 21-17 edge.
Burke gave his team a huge lift in the final minutes of the frame, though, scoring nine points in four minutes to give New York a 24-23 lead after one.
Brown led all scorers with 10 points in the quarter.
NIP AND TUCK New York jumped out to a seven-point lead early in the second quarter, as Burke and the Knicks’ bench continued to torment the Celtics.
But Boston responded with a 13-3 run to take a 43-40 lead with five minutes left in the half. The two sides traded leads for the next three minutes before a Horford 3-pointer gave Boston a four-point edge.
A late Emmanuel Mudiay bucket cut the C’s lead to two at the break. Both teams were more efficient on offense in the second quarter, as Boston outscored New York 36-32 in the period.
Burke led all players with 15 points in the half. Irving paced the C’s with 13 points, while Brown chipped in with 10 and Smart added eight.
UNCLE DREW TAKES OVER After the Knicks took a one-point lead early in the second half, the C’s and Irving responded by going on a 21-11 run. During the C’s flurry, Uncle Drew poured in 11 points, finishing the quarter with 15 points (28 overall). Boston got a little 3-point happy toward the end of the frame, however, helping the Knicks trim the lead to 88-81 after three.
FINISHING MOVE Burke continued to torch the Celtics’ bench in the fourth quarter, helping cut the Boston lead to 99-96 with a little over six minutes to play.
Boston stretched the lead to 10 on a Horford trey with five minutes left, but the Knicks came right back with a 6-2 run to cut the lead to 108-102, causing Boston to take a timeout.
Hardaway Jr. cut the lead to five with 2:41, but Boston went on a quick 6-0 run, highlighted by a massive Brown dunk to seal the win.
