How interesting of Joel to say to Ellie that she deserves a choice in episode 6 of the show, yet we know he then robs that agency from her at the end of the first game…

What a huge change. That honest conversation between Joel and Tommy was heartbreaking to watch. I think this is the first time we see Joel completely vulnerable in his emotions and fears. In the game, Joel never opens up to anyone about his developing fear of losing Ellie, just like how he lost Sarah. In the show, he completely breaks down and confesses that it has ruined EVERYTHING. He made a promise to Tess and feels so obligated to go through with it, yet he never considered this unknowing consequence, a happy accident, of him growing very attached to a young girl.

I really admire the changes they made to Henry and Sam for their arc to be fruitful in such a short amount of time. In particular, the reason why Kathleen is after Henry foreshadows exactly what happens with Joel and Ellie. Henry sacrificed Kathleen’s brother for leukemia medicine to save Sam, and Joel will eventually ‘sacrifice’ everyone in the hospital (Fireflies, the surgeon and doctors, Marlene) to save Ellie. One regarding the acquisition of medicine, and the other regarding the prevention of developing medicine. Complete mirrors.

We already knew the fate of Henry and Sam, but it is no less moving. Ellie knowing the fate of Sam before anyone else is crucial because it gave Sam some sense of hope, and Ellie becomes more in touch with her destiny of being the key to a vaccine. In the show it appears that Sam and Henry became, in some aspects, closer to each other than they did in the game. Camping out in the sewers where they read, played soccer, found cool toys, bonded them quicker in a shorter time frame. Also, having Sam characterized as younger and deaf makes him so much more reliant on Henry. And I specifically remember in the game where Henry gets angry at Sam for wanting the toy robot, and that they can only carry what is necessary. That dynamic is completely missing in the show. Sam had room to express himself as a KID who loved to draw, paint, write, and read. Sam was allowed to be a kid in the show, despite its horrors, which makes his and Henry’s death that more heartbreaking.

I LOVED how they gave so much characterization of Bill and Frank and how their relationship grew. It’s something we never got to see play out in the game, and the interpretation is so much more heartbreaking and meaningful. This episode was really for the fans, because it provides so much insight on why Bill had a shitty, grumpy demeanor in the game. Besides the suicide letter in the game, we never got to see what Frank was like and why Bill never mentioned him. They gave such a happy ending to Bill. A fully fleshed out storyline for Bill and Frank rather than having Bill serve as a pit stop on Joel and Ellie’s journey is brilliant. Both of their stories are strengthened with this show, and ultimately strengthens the characters in the game itself.

there were so many small details that foreshadow future conversations/reflect optional conversation ls in the game, such as Joel’s ‘okay’ after telling Ellie to not bring up Tess, Ellie relating the truck to spaceships, her seeing the plane and being jealous of Joel for being in the sky before.
