Alright everyone, hey how are ya?

So…What to do with this blog? Scythe has been a special interest of mine for a while and it means a lot to me

But with Neal not giving two shits about Palestine you have to make a decision about these things.

And I’ve made a decision, I will not be active in the scythe fandom, and will be leaving this blog. Not forever of course, I would definitely like to come back but for right now what Neal is doing is very wrong and if his supporters leave we may be able to do something.

We’ve already bought the books but that doesn’t mean we can’t do anything, don’t support future releases and SPAM THAT FUCKERS INBOX, make sure he knows we’re not happy and maybe he’ll make a statement or maybe not it still will do SOMETHING and that’s better than nothing

If you do keen posting about scythe however, I understand, just make sure to equally post about Palestine, it’s the least you can do!

I will be posting my remaining drafts of the Scythe rereads and other posts though keep in mind they are unfinished so they might not be as good as the others.

FUCK Neal Shusterman and Free Palestine!

The more I think about Neal Shusterman, the angrier I get.

You based your whole career on writing novels about corruption, and how we should speak up and do what’s right, even if it’s not the popular thing to do - and then when you’re asked to help amplify the voices of those being murdered in Palestine, you turn around and say “both sides are bad, but Hamas started it”. And in the next section of your newsletter, you’re trying to sell a graphic novel about the Holocaust.

How he lives with himself, I don’t know.

Rereading some of Neal’s books with the intention of analyzing it from a more critical perspective because of what I know now. Starting with Dry because it’s the first book of his that I read originally, so it felt like the natural place to start. Anyways, on Page 4, I encountered this.

I knew I was going to encounter Neal being a hypocrite but I didn’t think it was going to be this soon and this blatantly obvious.

I’ll be putting together a more structured breakdown eventually but this felt like it couldn’t wait

So either Neal or whoever runs his tumblr account is really, really bad at crediting artists, or just straight up lazy

Neal is seeming to give less and less of a crap about ethics and integrity

Neal Shusterman disgusts me. This is nothing new, of course, but many people in the Arc of a Scythe fandom haven't read Nicht Schöner als Ich and I feel like it should be talked about.

Nicht Schöner als Ich, translating to "No More Beautiful than Me" in English, is a short story in Gleanings that was written exclusively for the German-language copy of the book. It's about the purge of all mortal-born people that was briefly mentioned in The Mortal Canvas. I haven't finished it yet, I genuinely don't know if I can considering everything it is about (and the fact that It takes about 20 minutes just for me to translate a page, but that doesn't matter), but the basic premise from what I can tell is that Rasmus has to flee where he is with his grandma, Elke, who was born mortal, so that the scythes of the purge don't glean them. These specific scythes kill mortal-born people so that they can "cleanse" the population as all a show of power, a show of torture and bias, and a want to rule their own world.

Of course most of Shusterman's works are about killing, death, sacrifice, running and corruption and stuff. Translating this story, though, really makes me uncomfortable in the way it mirrors current events, with the genocide in Palestine, and the way Neal Shusterman is ignoring and literally engaging the killing of tens of thousands of people all while writing sympathetically about people being attacked and targeted in such a similar way is just so hypocritical and gross.

This is your reminder: I know you've probably heard this all before, but it cannot be forgotten about or ignored. Do NOT support Neal. Don't buy his books, don't buy his merchandise; if you want to read his books, buy them second-hand or support your local library. Try to minimize the clout you give him. Personally, I feel comfortable mostly interacting with people who are already in/have been in the fandom, and I don't want to post much or share his books, but absolutely no hate to people who still want to post about his content. Over 26,000 people have been killed in Gaza now. This is not something that you can just ignore, and this is not something you can be neutral on.
