Understanding Page 3 Culture
We all have seen Page 3 of newspapers. For many, it contains the most exciting section of the newspaper. And many actually read the newspaper just to read the Page 3 section. It contains the latest happenings of the upper class of our society: actors, music artists, fashion artists, and most people related to the Bollywood industry. It delves into the gossips of what the influencers are doing and what makes them so cool. But this begs the question, why and how do we have the Page 3 Culture? And what is it?
The Origin of Page 3
There was a time when newspapers were mostly black and white. Only the front page was coloured, which had the newspaper name, the biggest news of the day (Headline), and short pieces of news to continue reading later on another page inside. This acted as a hook for people to buy a newspaper and to show what was on the inside. When printing colours became more affordable, newspapers shifted to posting the colourful photos of the next section that was popular among the readers: the gossip section. This had all the gossips of the latest happenings in Bollywood.
When this gained attraction, a marketing strategy was employed which became what we call the Page 3 culture today. In a newspaper, page number 3 is the first page you, a reader, sees when you turn over the page number 1. Because the gossip section was popular, the newspaper put the gossip section on Page 3 with big colourful photos.
This helped newspapers in 2 ways:
Firstly, they kept the first page intact with serious headlines.
Secondly, because all the Bollywood was practically on the second page itself (second in the sense that it’s the second page you see when you turn over the first page), those interested in this section did not have to search for it.
By this time everyone knew that many people bought the newspaper solely to read Page 3. This led to the rise of Bollywood television news. Several channels were started which covered Bollywood news day and night.
And that is how the Page 3 culture began.

13 thousand volunteers recruited for Covaxin Phase III clinical trials
Hyderabad based drugmaker Bharat Biotech on Tuesday announced successful recruitment of 13,000 volunteers and continued progress towards achieving the goal of 26,000 participants for Phase III clinical trial of its coronavirus vaccine Covaxin across multiple sites in India. Covaxin Phase III human clinical trials were initiated in mid-November, targeted to be done in 26,000 volunteers across India.
