David Tutorial Task - Tate Video (18/7/23)
Interviewer introduction to the artist’s practice (prep them with 150 words)
Can you tell us about your latest project? The Donut Sub-Collection explores a series of public artworks from London's largest free-to-visit public art collection located in Canary Wharf. The project aims to challenge the “public” quality of privately owned public art through a satirical guided art tour of The Donut Sub-Collection – a fictitious art collection re-imagining 6 public artworks in Canary Wharf as donut installations.
Where is it situated? The project is based in Canary Wharf, London's core financial capital located in its Docklands on the Eastern edge of the city. With a long history of redevelopment populated by high-rise offices and newly built residential suites, the site was privatised in the late 1980s and is now characterised by its added level of of security and strict photography regulations on site. This contested public and private nature of Canary Wharf made it an interesting site to explore its public art collection, and perhaps to unearth the authenticity behind the public-ness of these privately owned artworks.
How does it connect with themes you’ve addressed before? My practice has always revolved around developing systems grounded in play and humour to intervene into the powers that hold precedence over individual lives and autonomy. The individual as a vibrant and emotional being is often forgotten against the rhythm and politics of living in fast paced societies, and I find that The Donut Sub-collection connects to my practice by re-inserting the public into public art and public spaces through emotional methods of making and writing that encourage the expression of the individual.
Who is the work for? - People who live in
Why is it important today? -
What artists do you look to for inspiration?
How will you make it?

Ethics of Practice-based Research (ie. Site Writing) (30/5/23)
Submitting ethic forms and papers as a way to cover ur ass for the potential future use of your project/research material. https://www.practisingethics.org/
(1) Informed Consent - participants needing to be fully informed of what they are doing/getting involved in; in order to make a decision to participate HOW: - a printed out information sheet + detailing their scale of involvement + how their "data" will be used/re-used + who to address further questions (2) Benefit not harm: - research benefitting society - risks of individuals must be minimised - everything explained clearly to audiences (3) Confidentiality: - release form vibes/consent form + pictorial/oral consent (recordings etc.) - but participants have the right to withdraw their consent at any time under UCL ethics - removing identifiable features of individuals in your media
(4) Low Risk Ethics Form (to be completed for the course) - key thing is to demonstrate consideration (like writing RAMs) of certain risks/possibilities
EXEMPTIONS: - anonymised records - observations of public behaviour (still should go through some ethics): however what defines a "participant"? - anonymous survey - usage of public figures - info in the public domain

Major Project Tutorial #1 (9/5/23)
conventions of the tour - street art tour - food tour - the first street art food tour(?) - what is the "coveted" knowledge offered in ur ""paid"" tour?
considering the performance of the tour - what are you wearing? high vis vest? donut floaty rings showing the next artwork we are heading towards? are you holding a flag? - are people offered something at each checkpoint? food? donuts? making the donuts? - how do the crochet objects manifest into the tour? - seeing how far you can get away from the security of the site
considering the significance holding the tour and acting in the space adds to overall ideas of "consumption"

23/3/23: Site Writing w/ Jane
Donut Sub Collection - Keeping with the curatorial language - Looking into how the curatorial language works (public galleries vs private/corporate sculpture collections) - Is there a particular language of high end collections? - 6-7 works - Sub-tour to pair with the catalogue - Possible challenge with blending the curatorial tone with business models - These pieces aren't pieces that are being sold - closer to real estate language - Why the works are there, are there any statements in the existing catalogue that discusses their value contributing to the site's value - Sugar Coatedness, Donuts with the Jam in the middle - Louis Bourgouis Mikabal Book (x7 types of art criticism of the same art sculpture) - Making the writing criticism more consistent (Julian Stallebrass) + High Art Light by Stallebrass ****** - Perfect site in a donut shop - Marisha Lewandowska (Paddington "De Tour") - Possibly bringing in people down the line that has stake in Donut economics, donut making, bake off shows etc. - Promises of public art is meant to democratise public art (lol CW is private land though) - Kitschy pop art vibe - Is public art that is public actually accessible? Is there a language that allows for a more accessible interpretation. - Donuts as very unhealthy objects, is there art unhealthy? - Allegorising (commentary without being explicit) - DUNKIN' Donut typography - Krispy Kreme typography (riff off that) - Website (their own walk), tour, where do you find the leaflet?, maybe there's audio description online of the tour. - What time of day should the tours take place? Weekend? Rush hour? Maybe different tours have different issues? - Title: The Donut Sub-Collection + good use of the word "sub" + visual language development is very important (colouring, lettering)

VANISHING POINT - CW POEM
White round ring of stone
Some might say, you look alone
Your powdered perfection, your infinite roundness
Some might say, a donut shaped anus
Ain’t us, to judge what you should be
Your mystery however, inspires me to be free
I’m done with counting numbers, spreadsheets and lunches
I want to be you, in all your donut-like wonders

23/3/23 SITE WRITING PRESENTATION 2
We begin our journey through the highlights of the Canary Wharf public art collection with The Golden Jelly Donut. With its prime location right at the mouth of the newly built Elizabeth Line, you will be drooling at your mouth upon an encounter with this multi-dimensional sculpture. The Golden Jelly Donut plays on the materiality of public art sculptures, with its steel body subverting its recognisable form of a nostalgic childhood snack. The golden sculpture plays on our expectations of the ubiquitous donut. One expects the soft, fluffy lightness of risen flour filled with a rich, deep red jelly concoction. Yet, what we experience is far from that. We are presented with a cutting edge, heavily polished formidable golden jelly donut. The cold, bronzed polished surface creates a strong form of contrast with the soft, sugared surface of the jelly donut.
It’s out of the world size brings to mind the work of sculptor Claes Oldenburg and his colossal recreations of sinful sweet and salty treats mother would never let you have past bedtime. The adaptation of Oldenburg’s practice into Canary Wharf is an attempt to transform the cut throat financial centre into a playground of desserts. The juxtaposition of sweet, teeth-rotting motifs with the sterile landscape of the reflective rectangular office columns adds a new dimension of meaning to the world-renown hub of finance. The choice of gold not only uplifts the status of the everyday donut to one of dignity and grandeur, but symbolises the award winning history of Canary Wharf. Not only did it once hold the record for the tallest building in the UK in 1991 with One Canada Square, but it is also currently home to the UK’s largest free-to-visit public art collection. Gold is therefore not just a symbol of wealth and prosperity, but the reflection of Canary Wharf’s position as number one in the world by some accord. By reducing the multi-textural baked treat into its purest structural form, the Jelly Donut leads us to question whether the Greggs located in One Canada Square opens during tea time.
Another baked good not only available in Greggs but also in Canary Wharf, is the iconic “Powdered Sugar Donut, Front Facing” sculpture. Yet, another keen addition to the sweet treats sub-collection. Employing the identical upscaling approach seen in “Golden Jelly Donut”, “Powdered Sugar Donut, Front Facing” brings the donut series back to its roots with its recognisable and irrefutable craft mimicking that of a white powdered sugar donut. Strokes of varying lengths and thickness stretch across the donut from the centre hole outwards towards the curves of the donut. This creates a strong sense of visual movement, drawing the eye from the perfect round rims of the donut into the empty mid-point. The round void located in the centre of the donut also acts as a natural framing to the Canary Wharf landscape that lies beyond the massive donut. It could be argued that the pin-hole perspective created by the sculpture reflects that of the minds of Canary Wharf locals. This perspective altering effect brings one’s focus away from its scale and towards the void in the middle of the sculpture – prompting us to question where the missing centre might’ve gone to. This leads us to the next piece in the donut sub-collection – “Dusty Donut Hole”

7/3/23: Scanning the City - Keren Kuenberg
Scanning as a way to fold and collapse a space (digital origami)
Envelope of a place
Unreal Engine - insert audio recordings into 3D objects
Encapsulating a space - idea of a lost space existing in your hard drive (memory capsule)
Photogrammetry
Highlights the significance of exploring a site remotely - figuring out what that means for the site and the individuals exploring the space.
Scanner lazer rays have ability to lift unseen images from surface of site
Scanning movement
Doll house effect
Layering over and physically inserting archival images/footage (literal digital collage) - I guess its a cool process
Re-Installing the Work:
Scanning can kind of remove life and soul from a space
Thinking about how this can be fixed by the insertion of more layers to the scan
Reflection:
Maybe scanning the artworks as a tool to observe the pieces in this 3D curatorial manner? Not just still images but a blend of both?
Possibly using the still images as a way to support the scan of the sculpture
Elevating that format of "art in focus" videos
Embedding a sketchfab file of Lidar scans
