Thanks for pointing that one out. He grimaced through his smirk, despising to be reminded of his near failure. No, he did fail. âThat wasnât your fault you silly girl. IâŠgot close to death because I underestimated my opponent,â he told her sternly. âNot because of your doing.â
Surely he didnât cut her this deep did he? He didnât want the kid to change her entire personality because of one stupid mistake. âYou werenât stupid, you were merely a bit reckless. Watching your surroundings when youâre excited is all you need to do,â he stressed, trying to catch her chin in his hand to get her to look at him. âNobody wants you to change who you are.â
Yes her naievety could be incredibly annoying and there were certainly things she could work on, but he didnât want her to change completely. âI donât want you to change based on a simple little blunder.â
*
The kid could certainly benefit from her fatherâs sensory cocoon things, couldnât she? Perhaps he should mention it to the prick, or see if he could procure one himself.
Alastor pinched the bridge of his nose, static grating the air around them. âAnd your friend Alastor has much to do, my dear. Far too much to have to worry about your recklessness in here.â

He really wasnât good at this sort of thing. It was tempting to just leave her to her own devices or get someone more comforting for her, but that would mean getting someone for the girl instead. He didnât want to deal with an angelâs spear orâŠwhatever Lucifer would cook up.
âCharlie my dearâŠif it werenât for you and this hotel, Angel would have no place to stay. He would still be suffering every hour of the day at the hands of that scantily clad maggot. Husk would have eventually perished at the bottom of a bottle.â âŠDidnât like thinking of that.
âAnd Pentious? Visibly, you gave him a purpose. You made him feel loved for the first time in his path-in his life. And your Father? That man would have eventually justâŠdrowned under mountains of ducks. This hotel has given Vaggie a purpose as well. Helped her seek redemption. NifftyâŠ.well, sheâd be happy anywhere, but.â He waved a hand dismissively. âYou get it, dear. You have helped everyone, by being you.â
Please let this be enough. All this sap was making him want to vomit

âItâs theâŠmechanics of it I thought as a joke, not you,â he sighed. He supposed even he needed to begrudgingly amend that statement. âButâŠit doesnât look it has been a joke, now has it? Even I must begrudgingly admit that.â
He tilted her chin up with his finger and looked at the fawn pointedly. âI didnât think it was possible, what youâve managed to do. Convince a bunch of wayward sinners to be out for more than themselves? How do you think you managed to survive Extermination night? You got everyone to want to fight for each other. They wouldnât have done that initially, now would they?â
âAs for crying over being yelled at , wellâŠyou and your father and Niffty have that in common!â Heâd made Lucifer cry more than once. Only difference was he hadnât felt bad.

Horns that kind ofâŠstabbed his chin. He grimaced but said nothing about it. Fine, whatever, he deserved that he supposed.
Alastor didnât allow the girl to pull away from him.He settled against the wall with the young girl in his arms, trying to figure out how to start this. He wasnât one that wasâŠgood when it came to the comforting words. Easier to just embrace or tickle the girl, but he had a feeling he couldnât get by with only that.
ââŠYou know, life would probably be easier if you did temper your penchant for your childish enthusiasm at times, but it certainly wouldnât be interesting,â he began. His fingers pulled out the ties of her braid absently, which had gotten quite messed up.
âAfter all, this hotel didnât fall in love with a girl who is calm and collected, but theâŠchildish bundle of energy always there to draw her little pictures for us, and burst into our rooms with song and dance. Jump on us while weâre walking through the halls. You bringâŠ.the sunshine, and if you werenât the way you were, a dismal cloud would hang over this hotel. I certainly wouldnât have any fun here if you werenât this little ball of sunshine, and we wouldnât beâŠâ
His lips pursed begrudgingly, embarrassed to say it. ââŠClose.â

She was really hysterical, wasnât she? Alastor felt his ears tilting back both at the shrill sounds of her anguish, and admittedly, concern. He didnât hurt her that bad, did he?
He must have. She was so softâŠthis world was going to eat her up alive.
For now he focused on remedying the relationship heâd strained, and looked softly down at the girl. âNowâŠâ he tutted, hands reaching down under her arms to pick her up. Not very becoming as a princess, now is it?â
His voice was almost affectionate, soft and soothing as he settled on the bed with her tucked in his arms and lap.

âShut up!â Alastor hissed, his arms crossing as he stalked faster to her room. âIt was Lucifer that made that tower.â ah yes any time Lucifer could be blamed he would.
Realizing his footsteps could be misconstrued as more anger, Alastor softened his footfall as he approached her door. She hadnât even shut it, and it was easy for the deer to slip in.
He missed when hearing her sob used to make him giggle. Missed when he didnât look down at her bawling form and feelâŠugh, guilty.

He could already hear the girlâs anguish as he started down the hall. Oh unholy hell, he wasnât even close to her room yet. Thank heavens no one was here to hear it.
Alastor looked over at his scowling shadow on the wall and growled. âOh donât look at me like that! You see Iâm going after her, right?â

The girl had found herself settled into the niche of his heart where Niffty resided. Once words intended only to piss of her father, had become quite genuine over these many months.
âI care for you just like a daughter I spawnedâŠâ It was never supposed to be genuine. He had a little bug that already took that role and she was more than enough, yet Charlie had wriggled in where she had no business being. And yetâŠshe was.
Alastor sighed as he picked up the charming drawing she!d made of the two of them and gently lay it back on the shelf. Then, hating himself, he started towards her bedroom.

Alastor shook his head and resumed cleaning up his tower. He grumbled as he knelt next to the ruins of his favorite valuables. Technically he supposed he could have found a way to fix it with magicâŠbut it was the principal of things!
That girl needs to learn to be much more careful around other peopleâs things! He told her to listen and she didnât. She deserved what she got.
And yet as he ruminate in his anger, Alastorâs vermillion eyes fell upon a piece of paper that had fallen off of the shelf. One of the many drawings she had made him. The first drawing in fact, and he reached down to pick it up. ââŠâ

Damnit⊠He hissed immediately to himself, which she probably misconstrued as even more anger to her. It was (begrudging) remorse for his choice of words.
Charlie was like her Father, to his knowledge, and reminded him of Niffty as well. Both their childish antics were oftenâŠincredibly endearing; truthfully it would be so boring if they did âact their ageâ. He regretted it the moment it came out of his mouth, and pinched the bridge of his nose.
Stupid brat and this stupid hotelâŠguilt never used to be a problem for him.

Alastorâs hand twitched in ill concealed fury, and with the urge to give the misbehaving little brat exactly what she deserved. If he wasnât sure heâd weather something awful from Lucifer, he might have done it.
In fact his hand was already raising when he realized it and just furiously spun to the wreckage instead. âI told you to calm down! I told you to be careful around them! Those are antiques! When are you EVER going to act your age?!â he shouted at her, static making her hair stick on end.
No, pull it back. If he scared her too much word would get to the King. Alastor slid a hand down his face. âGet out.â

âDonât-â Alastor snarled as his tendrils shot towards the kid with the speed of an arrow. One of the leathery appendages steadied the shelf before more catastrophe could befall his fucking stuff, and the other one yanked the brat away from his valuables.
âWhat the HELL did I tell you?!â he spat in fury. Feedback broke every word with a vicious crackle.

Was he frightening the girl? Good. Alastorâs canines bared in fury, contemplating giving in to the brief urge of releasing his rage on her. He looked closer to her, the static sweeping the air.
And then another fucking radio fell!?
âCHARLOTTE MORNINGSTAR!â

Alastor had been back to polishing his equipment when he heard the crash and he whirled around in horror, afraid to look at the damage. He blinked at his treasure, electronic components now scattered to the floor as it sparked and whirred.
The static that crackled from the broken speakers was almost as loud as what began to buzz around the young girl.
