Reflection - Finishing Digital Version of Outcome (LO4)
I am really happy with my final outcome. It took longer than expected but I still have enough time to print and bind to a high standard. The next steps for me are to do some draft prints of the pages and organise with Joseph when I can come in and bind my book.
I feel that my style developed really nicely with this outcome. At first I was a bit overwhelmed, but Emily's advice really helped guide me in a good direction.
I now need to begin working on my process book a bit more to catch up.

Final Chapter
For the final chapter, I want to summarise the information and also talk a bit more about what actions are being taken to help dai pai dong and their future.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I added some information about the government and tourism efforts in Hong Kong to try help dai pai dong. This is to further inform the reader about the current situation.
Tumblr media
I also added a page about Ball Kee, a dai pai dong that has recently closed. I felt this was a powerful ending to show that dai pai dong disappearance is real, and happening.
These pages were easier to design as my style is more cohesive throughout the book and I have more set layouts.

Contents Page
For the contents page, I want the layout to be simple. I separated the two languages for ease of reading. I think not complicating the contents is okay for my book because it fits in with the following pages in terms of colour and layout but is straightforward to read.

Improving organisation for outcome
One thing Emily mentioned to improve my outcome was to use colour to help differentiate information. I took this as a good way to organise the different types of Dai Pai Dong.
There are 3 different types - originals, cooked food markets and mushroom kiosks.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This can help readers to associate different concepts with the dai pai dong and help them to refer back to previous information that they can use to further their understanding more easily.

Current Reflection and organisation (LO3, LO4)
I have been doing really well this week and meeting a lot of the checkpoints I had planned. I am allowing myself a bit more time to finalise my final outcome to a higher standard. There is almost 120 pages in the whole outcome which is a lot, but I really want to maintain a cohesive and high quality output. This does mean that I've had to put my process book to the side a bit, however, I have made many process books before and I am familiar with how it works. I already have an idea of the layout and order of pages so I will leave it a few more days until I have completed my outcome design process.
Tumblr media
this is my to do list for this week. There is a lot on there but for my final outcome it is more double checking everything and ensuring it showcases my best work.

Working on chapter one - What is Dai Pai Dong?
Chapter pages
I want my chapter pages to all be the same so it is clear for users when it is the next section. Using my primary green colour with large white type I think looks quite good and not too overwhelming, but very clear. The green background will then indicate for readers when the next chapter is. I am liking the more minimal, and simple layouts as I think it works better.

Page breaks
Emily suggested that using pages with just images can help ease the process of reading the book as it gives time for absorbing the information and not being overwhelmed. I want to find a good balance of negative space that makes the images layout look sleek but not too organised.

Adjusting page layouts
I felt that my page layouts weren't as captivating at first glance. I wanted to try use some larger images rather than collage style for some pages. as my book will be bound in the lay-flat style, i can use both pages and the inside margin more freely.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I also added an organisation system to the top of some pages to help readers know where they are in the book. As the restaurants are organised by location, I used this as an indicator.

Title Page Progress
Tumblr media
The title page I orginally designed felt very plane and boring. I wanted to elevate this design a bit by changing the visual hierarchy and making the layout a bit more interesting.
Tumblr media
I chose an aerial image of central for viewers to fully visualise. I chose a modern day photo from 2022 as the following page will show the history of central and have photos of these time periods. As my target market is most likely people interested in cuisines and travelling, this can also help them to visualise Hong Kong as a city now and inspire them to visit etc.
I made the text bolder and descriptive of central and it's association to Dai Pai Dong so viewers have a clear link to why Central is relevant in their journey through the book.

Improving Book Organisation
In my feedback session with Emily, she suggested that I organise my book a bit better and consider the viewpoint of someone who has never heard of / knows anything about dai pai dong. I want my book to be easy to follow and act as a journey.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think this structure flows better with more information between each section to lead the reader through each chapter a bit better. I was scared to add any information that wasn't factual before but after talking to Emily I feel more confident to put little paragraphs here and there for context and further understanding for the viewer.

Counter Print Books (LO1)
Never Too Small
Tumblr media Tumblr media
uses yellow background to differentiate each section and then white background for pages within the section
varied shapes of images and also one large image on the chapter page looks good - lets the viewer get an idea of what is being explored
The Rules We Break
Tumblr media Tumblr media
use of text colour helps differ information
title of page in top left corner makes the text look less cramped together

Feedback session with Emily
Consider how you differentiate different sections - interviews have different page colour?
consider hierarchy and systems - do research into other editorials and the systems they use
final chapter - what does this mean for the future? what are we losing? use Ball Kee images
think of the viewpoint of someone who knows nothing about dai pai dong, make it very clear how to follow each section and the information
Reflection (LO4)
I'm feeling really positive about the feedback I have received from Emily. I now have a clearer direction as I was getting overwhelmed by the amount of information I have and how to make each section clear and easy to understand. I am going to look at other editorial books and see how they use systems to make everything clearer and then adjust my designs.

Current Point - Reflection (LO4)
After easter, I am feeling good about the primary research I have done and I think my outcome is going in a good direction visually and content wise. My initial plan was to interview each restaurant, however with the time I had and the busyness of the restaurants this didn't go to plan. I was able to photograph each dai pai dong however.
To adjust my initial plan, I will add in the interviews I did manage to get after a highlight page of the restaurant itself make it more photographic. This is still sticking to my main concept, but is more refined. I will also use YouTube interviews on other restaurants that I didn't manage to interview if I feel is necessary.
From now, I need to ensure I have a good plan as I only have 4 weeks left. I will make a daily and weekly checklist as I go to ensure I am staying on top of my work load.

Ball Kee
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I found these images of Ball Kee when it used to be open on google maps to show the comparison. This is a really powerful example of the declining culture in Hong Kong and lack of government support for these dying restaurants. I definitely want to show this in my final outcome
