Y’all know when Mulan is sitting in the rain and watches her parents silhouette disappear as the candle is blown out and then her eyes squint in determination and the music that starts to play and you see her go into the family temple and light a match and bow in respect and then sneak into her parents room and switch the scroll for her hair brooch and then the way her reflection is shown as she pulls the sword and cuts her hair?? It’s literally more iconic than any marvel movie

Alec: Excuse me, why am I considered the responsible one?
Jace: The other day, Clary stuck her hand in a toaster while it was still on because she wanted her toast right that second.
Simon: Jace has eaten ice cream with a knife because he didn’t want to acknowledge it was his turn to do the dishes.
Clary: Simon once crashed his van into the sidewalk because he saw a dog.
Alec: I’ll never question it again.

- “Reg, hey, look at me, hey, it’s okay, look at me, she can’t hurt you now,”
- Reg managing to look James in the eye and asking, between the gasping sobs that still shook him, how he knew
- “because I won’t let her. You understand? I won’t let her anywhere near you,” he smiles gently and reg nods, his lips trembling as the sobs slowly begin to fade away
- James cupping Regulus’s face, using his thumbs to wipe away the other boy’s tears.
- “It’s all going to be okay, I promise” James kisses Regulus on the forehead, and pulls him into his chest.
- James lying back on the grass, reg listening to his heart beating to slow his breaths.
- that’s how the other Marauders found them.
- cuddled on the ground, James’s hand on the back of Regulus’s head, playing with his hair, and Regulus mostly asleep on James’s chest.
((OOC: this started out as a Regulus loves science post and turned into Jegulus. How do we always end up here? B does all that stuff to help me come out of panic attacks and I needed a way to share that with you guys so… Yea…))

The Gods Today: Freyja
So I was inspired to further @tricksterinthehedges‘s post. I hope to slowly work my way through as I spend time working with the gods, researching, and meditating. There’s not really any order outside of who strikes inspiration when.
Sometimes she can be found in various male dominant jobs. A cop. A lawyer. A soldier. A social justice worker. A body guard. The latter is her favorite. Bars and strip clubs are her domain and she will fight to protect it and those inside.
To loyal, respectful patrons and the newcomers who are shy, unsure, and worried, she is considerate and makes sure they enjoy their time. To those who work for her, especially the girls, she demands respect for. There are rules to keep them safe, and all will follow them. She loves her girls. She validates their work. She fights to empower them and let them set their limits and define what their work is and means to them, and she makes sure everyone respects their boundaries. She’s known to give the best bonuses to struggling single-moms, and has put more than one kid’s through college.
Before opening, she can be found in the back helping workers with their make-up, wiping the bar down, doing inventory, and making sure the lighting and sound system are set up just right. The ambiance alone is magic; and she prides herself in the design.
Everyone knows the last dance is reserved for Freyja.
Sex workers know to keep around her. She gives them protection. She helps keep them safe from the scorn of those who spew vitriolic insults their way and those who’ve hired them who don’t understand boundaries and what’s acceptable.
She demands that expressions of female sexuality centers on empowering them first.
She’s also known to keep the creeps away from women in the gym.
Any free time she gets is devoted to Planned Parenthood and women’s health - whether that health requires a mammogram, a pap-smear, or HRT - she demands for it to be affordable and for it to be available and for it to be quality.
Freyja’s not always the best at handling nay-sayers and protesters, though. Her tactics tend to fall back on hollering and intimidating. Her passion and fury both inspire, make change, and create setbacks. Each time she finds herself staring at the ceiling of a holding cell because she got taken in for excessive force and disturbing the peace, she swears that next time she will keep a calm head. Next time she will destroy her opponents with words: well-crafted arguments and facts that leave no room for her opponent to take ground.
She gets a bit further next time, but the senator had it coming.
Occasionally you can find her and Freyr at Drag Shows, helping with make-up and keeping the crowd safe and respectable. She fiercely battles and dons on war paint every Pride as she walks alongside her brother.
The local animal shelter and hospital frequently receive donations: toys, money, and food. They never know who it’s from; it’s always anonymous. Some of the younger girls who volunteer are pretty sure it’s the badass warrior woman they secretly believe to be either a spy or superhero is the one behind it. She comes every Friday at 3 to stroll through the shelter before spending an hour with the cats, being sure to play with each one. Everyone is amazed when she manages to calm even the oldest and grouchiest of cats. The scarred and ragged 12 year old cat who has been determined feral and has been through more abuse than any animal deserves and refuses the touch or help of anyone. She manages to get him purring and walks away having adopted him. He is a fighter for respect; what’s not given is demanded. They see that quality in each other.
Perhaps most unfamiliar is battle wearied Freyja. Wrinkles crinkle her skin. Her hair has frosted streaks. On another they may give a weak appearance; on her they signal strength and endurance. She retreats to the coast to visit with her father. His warmth and guidance much needed and hard sought. She curls her toes in the sand and feels the salty air scrape her skin. Every now and then Freyr joins her. They lay together, hands clasped, watching the dawning of stars as they try to make sense and find reprieve in the never ending toss and tumble. This is their time for whispered secrets of doubt and insecurities. They find strength in each other’s pulse and their father’s rough hand gently combing through their hair.
She then retreats to her house: a modest place with a thriving garden compliments of her brother and her own nurturing hand. She curls up on her sofa; her fellow fighter worming his way onto her lap, purring words of comfort and assurance. The other, a young calico with enough energy to power the sun, recognizes it’s time to be quiet now and stands vigil during his Lady’s show of vulnerability.
Tomorrow she will begin again. Fighting for equality. Fighting for women. Fighting for all to see their self-worth. Fight for healthcare, comprehensive sex-ed, contraceptives, respect for sex workers and freedom of choice.
Fighting.
But, for now she rests.

The Gods Today: Loki
Next installment of reflections on the Norse Gods in the modern world inspired by @tricksterinthehedges
The easiest rule to remember when looking for Loki is that if there are children or those ostracized he’s not far behind. The hardest rule to remember when looking for Loki is that he refuses to be boxed into predictable patterns that aren’t his own making.
Loki can be found living on the streets with those abandoned, shunned, and forgotten. They’ve been lost to the world and are beginning to lose themselves. They’re all on the streets for an array of reasons, but it all comes down to being viewed as inhuman to others. They are LGBTQ+ kids kicked out of their home and disowned by family. They are the mentally and physically disabled - some born and others created from wars - that the world has determine do not offer a valuable place in society. They have been left to rot.
He scavenges alongside them, bracing the fierce uncaring of the world. He sits on street corners in the high heat of summer, fighting sunstroke and heat exhaustion. He curls up under bridges and in alleys during the low chill of winter, fighting frostbite and gnawing hunger. Sometimes he fills a truck full of food, water, clothes, and toiletries. He’s stuffed the necessities in hiking backpacks that he hands out to everyone he sees. He returns the spit and hatred sent their way. He protests for them. He fights in the government, demanding funding for shelters, demanding respect, demanding that they be seen as the victims of the society around them assigning a low value to their existence and NOT their intrinsic worth.
For young men of color, he walks the streets with them. Keeping their mind sharp and tongue quick. They shouldn’t need it, but they do. He’s seen one too many cops charge forward bull-headed, believing the man in front of him is a savage beast that poses a threat. Fire licks his skin as he once again has to help a child resort to smooth talking and keeping to the shadows to simply survive in his neighborhood from those meant to protect him.
Lawyers like to think he’s on their side. But in truth, he likes working against them. Tripping them up, throwing curveballs, testing their wit, humbling their god-complex. He knows manipulation of truth; it is his craft. But something rubs him the wrong way about humans using it to obstruct rather than elucidate. Though, he has seen Legally Blonde, and he thinks that if more were like Elle Woods and Emmett he would happily be their patron.
Loki’s a favored substitute teacher. The classroom rules that enforce organization are scrapped. Chaos reigns. More than a few teachers passing in the hall have expressed worry and skepticism about his efficiency and efficacy. He laughs and waves a hand. “Kids learn in chaos and experience.” It’s how they make sense of the world. It’s how they learn to survive, to create, to thrive. All required assignments are always done in record time, and then more is accomplished. Perhaps they spent the day dissecting the field mouse someone found a recess, but they made more connections to the inner workings of the world than they had before. Students walk away with wild tales of what they learned - in truth most of them are new ways to prank siblings, parents, and other such pesky figures of authority. Some seemingly throwaway comment he made in passing returns to them 15 years later in life and helps them make sense of the swirling storm of adulthood and the world. More than a couple of his young students have gone on to become teachers in their own right who respect the chaos and creation of the learning experience.
He’s the bane of college students’ existence, though. He exists as the one professor you want to strangle because he refuses to give you a straight answer. He pokes. He prods. He flips the question back on you. He argues any side with ease. He is fond of being deemed “The Devil’s Advocate” because it means he’s got you engaged and thinking. His students struggle to get his approval. They struggle to see his way. But that’s the thing. He doesn’t have one way to see something. He sees through, around, above, and under. He pushes you to do the same.
At the end of the day, he knows all destruction and upheavel he’s accomplished has to be done. It’s the natural order and makes way for creation. He is the raging forest and brush fires from both natural and man-made causes. Everyone happily gives him blame and credit for those, but they fail to still find him in the smoldering ashes rejuvenating the soil, letting the new generation take root in fertile soil. They fail to still find him in the raging social action that sweeps through local government to ensure protections and preventions against such devastation happening again. They see seem him in the natural disasters and fall-out, but fail to see him helping with the construction of the foundations for a new city with higher dreams as they work to overcome and build on this pain. They fail to see him in the innovation that follows.
He spends time with his daughter in children’s hospitals, watching them fight for life against their body’s self-destruction. He sees his children in them. He sees the pain and anguish and strength in the face death. He works to bring laughter and joy, however momentary it is. He doesn’t leave until he’s visited every child and brought a smile to each face.
He spends time in the prisons and jails. He volunteers to teach classes. He keeps addicts honest. Sometimes he becomes a probation officer and the odd counselor. More than once he’s gotten in trouble for questionable methods, but he gets results. He forces people to address the darkest parts of themselves. They embrace or run away. They give in or strive against. Whichever they chose, he doesn’t necessarily care either way. He just cares that they know and acknowledge it. Things still fall apart in the darkness. It’s best to shine a light on them and be aware of where the breaks and holes are. Frequently, it’s those on the outside of the bars who need this lesson more.
He wanders with those lost in the wilds, those who hiked too far or whose car broke down. He keeps them vigilant and aware of the threats surrounding them. He inspires their resourcefulness. This is new terrain. This is wild terrain. Civility won’t bring survival. He encourages the animalistic instincts to come out.
He helps people fight for what they want.
He helps acceptance of selfishness. Sometimes it’s what you need to survive. Sometimes you need it to live. Sometimes it’s just fun.
The only constant he has is with one-to-one relationships. He never presents or acts just the same to two people. But he’ll stay true to who he is to you. He’s fluid, but always who he is. The moon goes through phases but is still the moon. Elements change states of matter but still remain as their element, such as water to ice to vapor. No one has managed to catch his core self, but it settles in the center of his bones and thrums in his veins. Many have ideas. Many have found commonalities. Many believe they do, but they are too quick to judge and pick and choose and force the pieces. Sometimes you may catch a glimpse flicker in his eye; an ember of the doused fire inside.
Angrboda accepts his core, but has never quite understood it. She’s been known to turn a blind eye to the extent of his creative powers. Sigyn loves and understands his changing nature and his part of bringing rebirth through death, but every now and then a haze crosses his eyes, the corner of his lips crinkles, and a new dynamic she has never witness comes through. She has found that to understand she must know that he’ll never be stagnant.
But, when the world sleeps and monsters prowl, he takes time to be still. He watches the stars turn in the sky around him. He listens to the wind curl and embrace the world; it stops to say hi and play with his hair for a moment, offering a caress before it carries on. He feels the earth thrum underneath his soles and thinks on the future he is fated to live. He’s never cared for predictability, and if they think it will end the way they say, they clearly have never met him. He vows as the night fades to mingle with day that he will take charge of himself. That’s what he centers around.

Tenets of the Gods
Baldr: The brightness of life. Let your presence be inspiring and beautiful to all. Allow your joy to radiate from within and become your aura. Bragi: Believe in the power of your words. Speak carefully with thought and precision. Let your praise empower and strengthen, and your insults dishearten and wither. Eir: Seek the cure. Help those in need, and offer comfort in whatever form you can. Reject the corruption of disease, any affliction can be treated and healed with the right approach. Fenrir: Destroy your chains and those who forge them. Never be cowed or submit in fear, reason should be met with respect but dominion with insurrection. Forseti: Deliver the beneficial compromise. Let peace be brokered and unnecessary conflict be evaded, good faith be honoured and deception be castigated. Freyja: Bask in your glory and empowerment. Let pleasure be a virtue, and self-determination be the basis of your strength. Revel in your emotions for they are your power. Freyr: Advance the endeavour of growth. Nurture life in all its forms and display the beauty of progeneration. Anything can take root and grow given the right conditions. Frigga: Provide and protect. Let all you care for be comfortable and safe, and no need be denied. The fire can warm but also burn. Heimdall: Vigilance and caution. A misstep may bring misery and an unheard word, disaster. The way forward is clear and danger is transparent, when the time is taken to identify it. Hela: Death is but the other half of life. Let stillness be, and quiet guide your thoughts. Endings should be neither sought nor feared, an end is but the opportunity for further beginnings. Idunn: Wisdom in youth. Let the words of babes ring with your consciousness and seek the truth held in their innocence, ignorance is found in the dismissal of the young. Loki: Freedom in fun and change. Do not be bound by norms and civility, evil is often disguised as order, and the fabricated as natural. The good thing is not always the common thing, deviation can lead to delight. Modi: Evolve and progress. Find no contentment in maintaining a status quo. Each day be better than yesterday, see the good of your forebear and strive to excel further. Seek, always, the betterment of your theory and actions. Njord: Ebb and flow, give and take. Action begets reaction, matter demands a void, for happiness there must be sadness, for gain there must be loss. Balance is a virtue, no one approach can suit every obstacle. Odin: Wise and learned. Always search for the opportunity to learn, wisdom is found in the diversity of life. Give your knowledge freely and be gracious in reception, a mind in isolation is a mind that does not grow. Sif: Be proud and know your worth. Demand your place and your right to exist in the world. Pay mind to fair criticism but reject detractors wholly. Take pride in yourself, and seek betterment for your own sake. Sigyn: Steadfast and devoted. Stand firmly for what you believe, keep loyal to that you love. Nothing worth doing is easy, no worthwhile thing is effortless. Love takes work, and ideals require labour. Skadhi: Justice through vengeance. Vileness be met with viciousness, the unforgivable can not be forgiven, though reason may temper rage. Covert, can be calamity, and war kept for a better day. Thor: Powerful protection. Vie for strength in soul and arm, to protect is to persevere against evil, contest not only in arms but in wills. To bring joy against misery, hope against despair, and a hammer against tyranny. Tyr: Honour and sacrifice. Victory is not always decisive, a small win leads to the larger success, a minor loss can avert the grander. Achievement can come in portion just as well as in entirety. Ullr: Mirth in contest. Appreciate fair competition and find joy in the fight, to train you must have a partner, to win - a rival. In loss be grateful for the challenger and in victory, for the challenge. norsegodcalls These are some personal interpretations of the kinds of values and virtues that the gods each have, written up as specific tenets.
