Any tips on dark academia fashion?
DISCLAIMER: these aren’t requirements! Contrary to literature and film, fashion doesn’t have concrete limits when it comes to the dark academia genre. Know that quality, comfort, and price are always the most important things to consider when updating your wardrobe. A bespoke suit might look fantastic for walking around like Henry Winter, but if you’re going to feel uncomfortable wearing it (and if you’re going to spend half of your savings for it), it’s best to just leave it hanging on the rack.
Here are some of my favorite clothes/accessories that remind me of the dark academia aesthetic.
timeless jewelry
gold or silver toned bracelets, ornate vintage rings, fine necklace chains with small pendants, heart-shaped lockets, belts, silver cuff links, statement brooches, cummerbunds
simple, plain fabrics
tweed, cotton, wool, linen, crêpe, gossamer
coverings/outerwear
trench coats, blazers, pea coats, smoking jackets, waistcoats, duffel coats
neckwear
cravats, neckties, scarves, ascot ties, bow ties
tops/bottoms/other
blouses, dress shirts, sundresses, turtlenecks, shirtdresses, patternless t-shirts, cardigans, polo shirts, twinsets, high-rise pants, slipdresses, palazzo pants, cocktail dresses, dress pants, leggings, little black dresses, suits
shoes
leather boots, dress shoes, black pumps, beige sandals, flats
accessories
sunglasses, gloves, headbands, leather watches

i need a dark academia style guide my friend
Aha, my friend. I’ll try, but it’ll probably be a rant by the end!
Dark academia is elegant, nostalgic, decadent, morbid, and, most importantly, academic.
Try seeking out thrift stores, vintage shops, estate sales, and your dead relatives’ closets for elegant vintage finds. From there on, it’s preference.
In general for Dark Academia, it’s studious turtlenecks, waistcoats, and oxfords all around, but it can be so much broader than that. Self-expression and devotion to studies to an unhealthy extent is kind of the trademark, so if that means dark circles under one’s eyes, messy hair and wrinkled pants in favor of reading a goddamn encyclopedia, that’s Dark Academia fashion.
It could also be flowy white blouses, flowery perfume, perfectly straight hair, and a well-rested softness.
Do you want to be a 1980s astronomy student unsuccessfully poisoning your professor? a 1890s boarding school kid running away with a copy of Byron? Perhaps a feverish 15th century alchemist? Find your aesthetic, find your field.
Dark Academia is a genre that, for me, means engaging in the intriguing to an extent sometimes ignored by those who encourage routine and safety, go all out. Carpe diem.

oddly specific aesthetic playlists
for when you’re overcome with the spirit of a 19th century lesbian watching a girl take off her petticoat for the first time
girls with dark hair and even darker eyes, empty marbled halls echoing with memories of centuries past, ancient leather bound books written in dead languages, thick sweaters to overcome the persistent chill that unfailingly seeps through the stone walls
you’ve been wandering around the old woods behind your house for a few hours now and you’re not sure if you’ve stumbled into a fey realm or not, but either way you’re like 90% sure you saw a dryad
for when you’re really feeling that morally grey witch vibe. just make sure to wait at least 10 minutes and cool down before hexing/cursing anyone
a nostalgic set of songs from my 2000s french childhood
time to long for the touch of another human!! let’s get emo (mostly mitski and also very gay)

read classic poetry in the bath.  scratch shakespeare quotes into your desk.  keep black-and-white pictures in a golden locket.  learn the language you’ve always wanted to learn.  dance in the rain, even if you’re not sure how.  read wikipedia pages on unsolved mysteries at two in the morning.  live your life the way you want to, make your own rules, become who you’ve dreamed of being.  because really, who’s stopping you?

“But there was one in the village who neither laughed at David nor called him moon-calf. That was Hans Krout, the cobbler. For Hans Krout was also moon-struck. Some of the people of the village used to say the he knew less than nothing, and I dare say what they said was true enough- only sometimes it takes more wits to know less than nothing than to know more than a little.”
