‪A bit late, but here’s my poster for Better Call Saul 510, Something Unforgivable. I think I just didn’t want the season to be over. Remember, it’s Kim Wexler’s world—we’re just living in it!

there’s something extremely uncomfortable with how everyone on this website is obsessed with splitting the rainbow community up. like last year it was that “a day for every orientation” bullshit and right now it’s this flag thing that’s claimed the rainbow flag for gay men and demands everyone have an independent flag like,,,there’s barely an overarching community AT ALL on this website at this point, everyone’s so adamant about breaking things down, making sure everyone knows their proper “place” within the community, trying to set up this most to least oppressed scale, showing outright hostility at the concept of trying on labels, and it is *exhausting.*
i know it goes hand in hand with the rise of exclusionary politics around here but yall, we’re all in this together. lesbians, aces, bi ppl, trans ppl, stargender ppl, gays, intersex ppl, there’s no hierarchy, and there’s no exhaustive list. It’s absolutely fantastic if you want to show pride in your specific identity, but be very very careful it doesnt turn into an “us vs them” faction situation. We’re ALL under the rainbow flag, and you don’t need to prove to anyone exactly which stripe is yours.

“I don’t know if Mike thought he could ever save Jesse, he could only tell him to go away from the business. I don’t think he ever wanted to take Jesse on as a son, but I think he instinctually loved him. Mike has a lot of love in him. He can’t put it in words. He knows he’s broken and it’s very easy for him to see how broken other people are.”  – Jonathan Banks

the choice to make chuck’s condition/delusion electromagnetism sensitivity is so interesting to me. i mean they could have chosen anything, but they chose that. and i keep thinking about all the symbolism of it (have the writers ever talked about it?).
something about how rejecting electricity means being stagnant. it means rejecting a thing that is often held up as a symbol of technological and civilizational progress, of modernity. chuck’s allergy to electricity keeps him physically and socially isolated, and living in the technological past (at least in the context of his particular society).
which fits for the role he plays in jimmy’s life. chuck is the person that tethers jimmy to his past. that forever sees him as slippin’ jimmy, as someone stuck in an old identity. it works that chuck gets sicker when he thinks jimmy is reverting, not just because of who he is on a character level, but because his illness is tied to that concept of stagnancy.
there’s also something interesting in the way that chuck holds up the law as a sacred ideal, an advanced social technology that elevates us. yet the fact that he is terrified of a different symbol of “progress” suggests that his idealization of the law is more complicated than he might want to think. what chuck’s love of the law and fear of electricity seem to have in common is that they’re a way of controlling chaotic realities. to obey the law means to obey the rules that have already been set down–not examining whether those rules are just, but accepting the decisions of the past. and to isolate oneself from the outside world means not having to change in response to that world.
so even though chuck is right about the law and jimmy in many ways, the fact that he also has a delusional commitment to a stagnant mindset suggests an underbelly to his ideals. which is that if you are forever committed to what was, then there’s no way to explore what can be. for better or for worse. (which is something that many other characters on the show struggle with too)
