list of things abled people think are so funny or creepy that it's societally normalized to either make fun of people with them, or to be disgusted by people with them, to the point that if you bring it up people will roll their eyes and tell you you're nitpicking
- strabismus (eyes are not in alignment. you call this cross eyed)
- lazy eye (reduced vision in one eye. you call strabismus lazy eye but it's not. a lot of people with lazy eye also have strabismus however, and a lot of people with strabismus have lazy eye, as both conditions can lead to each other. regardless, lazy eye is lazy eye and strabismus is strabismus. the medical term for lazy eye is amblyopia)
- ptosis (heavy eyelids, especially when one droops more than the other)
- facial paralysis (lopsidedness and inability or difficulty making facial expressions) and weakness (i have fucking concerned, morose bloodhound face and talk out of the corner of my mouth, does that explain it)
- twitching and jerking
- twisting movements of the body- especially when it's the head and neck are the ones i see ableism about the most
- stroke symptoms, particularly the speech issues but also everything else, like the teetering to one side/lack of balance/walking like you're drunk. and the weak face, different gait, and wrist drop.
- different ways of walking but the ones i see made fun of the most are waddling, teetering, and shuffling. the way zombies and monsters move is also relevant here.
- scoliosis (spine curves either in an s or a c), kyphosis (the term you might recognize is hunchback), and lordosis (back dips). bonus for getting made fun of AND for being in a multitude of horror movie monsters, villains, and monster designs
- intellectual disability, developmental disabilities, and brain damage in general
- drooling.
- going to go ahead and throw in incontinence here
- bent wrist when you can't call it elegant because it's being held to a chest, knocking against the thigh or knee, or can't be moved out of position
- hands clenched or held in strange positions (mine always does the fucking rock on gesture????)
- claw hand, most commonly seen in horror and villains. (this term refers to a hand that makes a claw shape. the fingers bend up. it hurts, so fucking badly, in case you were wondering)
- jittery, robotic incremental pauses in between movements. there is a medical term for this but i can't read right now. you see this in monsters a lot.
- wheezing, strangled laughter, as of someone who has problems fucking breathing.
- hypotonia (low muscle tone) and hypertonia (high muscle tone). muscle floppiness and rigidity are commonly seen in zombies
- nystagmus (eyes shaking or jerking)
- tics
- shaking and tremors
- floppy neck
- seizures
- different voices. flat affect, straining, nasal tone, speaking slowly, and breathiness, for example
hm
all of these are neurological (brain, spine, nerves, muscles) symptoms.
and i'm probably missing some, even.
be thankful your muscles fucking work.
edit: this post is solely about neurological issues please don't add anything that isn't neurological (spine, brain, nerves, muscles) thank you

good choice to leave out tissue 👍
*I left out my four least favourites because there's 16 on the anthology, but those four were: Tissue (Imtiaz Dharker), The Charge of the Light Brigade (Alfred Tennyson), Poppies (Jane Weir), and War Photographer (Carol Ann Duffy) P&C students, I'm sorry if one of those is your favourites, but I picked my favourites based on first impressions, whereas with L&R I have personal experience with all of them.

““Modernity” is in reality just another name for the European project of unlimited expansion undertaken in the final years of the eighteenth century.”

While I'm posting about my pathologic transcription, I'll make shorter posts about my takeaways. About the literal health of the environment around town, we get a couple people on day one to give context. The most obvious is Aspity, but to get an idea as to why things are as she says, you have to talk to a drunkard, called a Carouser, and a Tot.
The Tot mentions a "Rotten Field," and when asked what that is, he says:
"It’s where they bury the bulls’ bones. The place is covered with fur instead of grass, and it’s all bones bones bones underground. Bones and horns. Yeah."
Why are so many bones and horns and hides being thrown into a field instead of being used in some way? Either for jewelry, clothes, or for tradesmen's tools, these things have a variety of uses.
The Carouser, when asked about the Abattoir, says:
"Hundreds of bulls are being slaughtered there- what else is there to know? It is our humble town that provides the whole Northeastern region with beef! Or even the whole country mayhap."
It's because of the massive scale of the Bull Project that so much excess material is being produced and then thrown into the fields and rivers as waste products. Nothing is in higher demand than meat, nothing is needed as regularly, and perhaps the people in the Capital and in other towns are less interested in buying blood or bone. It's not profitable, the Olgimsky's don't view it as anything but by products of more lucrative things.
Aspity says:
"All that water comes from the Steppe and it isn’t exactly clean. Yesterday I inspected all the springs in the area; there seems to be no more clean water around. That salty taste is everywhere, it’s reddish in colour, and there are disgusting clots in it."
And when Bachelor asks for more information, she says:
"The towsnfolk store water in home-made reservoirs. This modest supply should be enough to help us last a little while, but afterwards we’ll have to drink that bloody mixture."
Bachelor reacts to this with disgust, and can even insist she is lying, perhaps because he had been benefitting from this disgusting reality in his life in the Capital.
Aspity's whole point in starting this conversation is to make blatantly clear some of the side affect of the Steppe's occupation, which is that the waste material of the Abattoir is dumped into the river and land. This problem would be lessened in severity if the community was manufacturing meat not for the sake of providing for the entire country, but just for the local population. Obviously, this would be less lucrative for the Olgimskys (who don't care as long as they don't suffer any loss) but it would mean that the people who live here would better be able to care for themselves and the land with no need to think of supporting an entire country off the backs of one small community. The occupation of the Steppe, the running of the Bull Project, will not only destroy the Kin and lower classes, but will also eventually kill the town, the higher classes and even the Olgimskys as well. When the water runs out, it will run out for the lower classes first, but it will eventually run out for everyone.
More on Fat Vlad trying to talk about this all as if it were an inescapable, natural reality (and the Bachelor's fighting against this notion) later. Sort of how some people think that the way the world works, capitalism and such, are natural laws instead of constructed ideas (horrible fallacy).

When a drug dealer sells drugs to a child who dies from an overdose, people call for the drug dealer's head on a stick.
So when a landlord evicts a family with a child and the child dies from being homeless, why isn't the landlord treated the same way?

I get what internet (often borderline or overt rad)feminists are trying to say with shit about how men never have to deal with x, but sooo many of the examples get shot to shit when you apply any other Man to the example than a cishet rich thin white guy.
“When have men ever had to worry about being killed for something they wore?” Black men. Gay men. Trans men.
“When have men ever been body shamed?” Fat men, balding men, disabled men.
“When have men ever had to worry about walking home at night?” Black men, gay men.
People reinvent “if men could get pregnant” over and over and when someone says “oh they do actually” it’s always viewed as hostile and not a potential intersection.
Like no, you do not have to coddle men, but men saying “hey I do know what it’s like actually” are not outright our enemy trying to center themselves, they are often extending a hand saying “hey I do get it too.”
