Thinking about how Rope managed to put homosexuals on the screen in 1948 of all years and how much genuine care and affection went into the portrayal of Brandon and Phillip's relationship. Something about how they just did it quietly but sincerely and it was there for those at the time who couldn't express themselves openly and it's there for us to love now we can talk about it freely. They referred to it as 'it' on set. Farley Granger and John Dall discussed it in private. We've all heard about how everyone knew but James Stewart. And there's something about the way they didn't really need to do it at all but they still did. It's quiet and in the background and yes it does make the dynamic more compelling but ultimately it's not 'necessary' and the film isn't actually about it at all and they could have so easily stripped it from Brandon and Phillip entirely like you'd expect most filmmakers of that era to do. But they didn't and it's still there and it always will be. I need a moment

The novelization has some really good elements too it, some of the details I particularly enjoy. Like giving bit more backstory to everyone, though some of it is a little panic āitās not gayā š§āāļø correction
Noticeably
-> The amount of times ābrotherlyā is used is funny
-> Brandon says my bedroom instead of the bedroom (though noticeably Philip still had a key and thereās still one room in the map on the back)
-> Phillip seems to actually have guilt over the murder where as in the movie itās much more just the fear of being caught
-> it also works to absolve Philip of guilt and agency? See he feels really bad about it and the poor little baby was manipulatedā¢ļø - even noting a āIām gladā after ātheyāre comingā - it works hard to make a plausible divide so you donāt š

Here's an incredibly high-quality scan of the Warner Bros. Pressbook for Rope. This is honestly an insane find. 41 pages full of interesting production info, a bunch of new pictures, and the most fascinating part: WB's very elaborate suggestions for giant advertising campaigns to promote the movie. I really, really wanna know how many of these were actually used by theaters because there are so many, ranging from genius to goofy.
I highly recommend downloading the PDF and reading through the whole thing. Here are some of the highlights:
There are ads for every possible newspaper section, from sports to financials. Some of these are hilariously random and have nothing to do with the plot of the movie. Two of my personal favourites:
Then there's these absolute gems. Recreation-worthy tbh:
Just two of the many interesting featured articles. The first one explores the reasons behind using technicolor for the film, and the second gives some insight into how much rehearsal and perfection was required of the actors, in this case John Dall:
A beautiful behind-the-scenes photo:
For the Rope fans with long hair, here's a hairstyle you can recreate:
And last but not least, this giant design for an advertising billboard:

guys please stop feeding my growing john dall crush (i actually donāt mind)
Article about a 1949 television movie called "Miracle In The Rain", featuring John Dall in the lead role. Excerpt from the Radio and Television Mirror (Jan-June 1949 Edition).
From what I understand there's another version of this film made by Studio One in 1950. This version can be found on YouTube, but I sadly couldn't find the one with John.

Yāall I havenāt drawn anything in 10+ years but I really wanna draw these guys and well, hereās my first attempt. I literally used a Bic pen and printer paper cuz I have nothing else in the way of art supplies. But Iām so so happy with how Phillip came out! Still working on Brandon.
Glad that my ongoing obsession with Rope (1948) has rekindled my interest in drawing. And Iām gonna actually buy a sketchbook and pencils and what not. So more to come and hoping to eventually move into digital, which Iāve never done before š¬
