Anyway today’s idea is:
Jimmy as a magical construct created to be a facsimile of someone else. A two dimensional copy. An almost-as-good knockoff. When he and Thomas run into the original man (who goes by James? Perhaps?) Jimmy is copied from he assumes that’s game over for Thomas’s interest in him. One day Thomas will smile at James and wonder why he was ever so enthralled by something with so much less depth. Proceed Thomas of course to prove him wrong and they get together and live happily ever after.
Also it’s entirely possible that James’s parents are still alive. Jimmy has memories of them being his parents but they aren’t. 😇.

Discord has reminded me, I had a plot bunny a while back, wherein Richard is, in fact, literally good at everything, because he made a deal with a demon as a kid (possibly accidentally). He and Thomas haven’t been together for terribly long when the demon comes to collect, and Thomas has to rescue him! And after he’s saved, for the first time since he was a little kid he’s bad at some things. And he has to learn to cope with being bad at things, and learn to learn things he doesn’t pick up naturally, with Thomas’s adoring help.

Some slightly rambly thoughts about contrasting (but both extremely cool in my opinion) things that Thomas's most popular movie love interests offer him:
Richard as someone who has a lot of trouble letting the mask slip, who offers hints at what's behind the curtain but has trouble pulling it back entirely, and how, while that will presumably present its challenges between him and Thomas, it’s also something where I think... Thomas being able to help with that, Thomas being the person who’s more able to let the mask slip and leading by example, can offer Thomas a way of seeing and appreciating parts of himself that he hasn’t before. Both in that I think in many situations he views his mask slipping as a Weakness that he wishes he could get rid of, and that on the other hand he’s always been told he’s too cold, not sincere enough, and I expect part of him believes it. So to both see and value his own ability to take the mask off (and see, when he’s looking at Richard, even more clearly that oh of course it’s hard to take the mask off sometimes, like he knew had good reasons but looking at them on someone else drives it home even more), I think can be something really special.
And then there's Guy, who also wears a mask but a looser fitting one, who comes along and after one conversation with Thomas just decides “This is a man I want to make myself vulnerable to” and then does it? The way he instantly sees Thomas as someone who it’s a good idea to open up to, after all these years of Thomas being mistrusted at every corner including when he is doing his best to be kind? ;asldkjdkls;fOH MY GOD.

Thomas out with Chris for a night on the town when he gets hit by a sudden onset migraine and Chris finds them a dark back room where Thomas rests against his shoulder as Chris holds a damp cloth that he somehow magicked up - that must have been the part of the conversation with the bartender that Thomas missed while trying to keep his stomach on the inside - and strokes his hair.
Richard working through that throbbing pain over his right eye, holding onto the knowledge that he sees Thomas in a few hours, but when Thomas finally comes to meet him he’s so exhausted he can barely converse. Thomas after a moment of insecurity figuring out the problem before Richard can even explain, and getting them a cup of tea to drink quietly on a park bench, not talking or moving just breathing and taking comforting sips (and quietly passing most of his to Richard after Richard finishes his first cup, so that he doesn’t have to leave his side to fetch him another).
Jimmy trying to get through one of those days where the slight ache in his skull is nothing compared to the way every little noise from footsteps to cutlery clinking to papers rustling and the feel of his clothes against his skin and motions in his peripheral vision make him want to scream, cry, cover his ears and eyes and curl into a ball away from anything touching him - it doesn’t even hurt, not in any way that he could explain, but it makes him want to scrape his brain out with a spoon - when Thomas is suddenly ?checking his forehead and scolding him for not taking a rest ? “Honestly, would you rather be sick for one day or five?” asks Thomas and he’s somehow managed to imply that they talked about it this morning and Jimmy chose to be diligent, which Jimmy can’t believe Carson buys, but now he’s upstairs, alone in his room, his nice quiet room without even any footsteps in the hall because it’s the middle of the afternoon and there’s no one else in the attic and he can close his eyes and undo his horrible horrible collar and breathe until dinner. He’s astonished to find that by the time Thomas comes back up to check on him he’s ready to return to work without screaming, in fact he’s bored enough to want to, because a couple hours of sanctuary have turned the dial on his senses down to normal.
Thomas trying to untangle a scheduling nightmare that has sprung up at Hancock Park and he knows the mounting tension in his head and neck are going to do him in but he just - he has to resolve this, has to get it right, this sort of problem is what he said he’d be here to solve - but Guy asks him so gently to step away from the office and take a break that he does so, and then Guy is stroking his temple and asking if it helps with the tension to have his shoulders rubbed and Thomas is a little embarrassed to admit that he doesn’t know because no one’s ever done it for him- but only a little, and he’s thrilled to discover, with the help of Guy’s gentle hands, that it helps very much to have his shoulders and neck rubbed.

Thomas and Guy don’t set out to get a cat: Thomas gets Guy a dog and this manky little stray cat falls in love with their dog and starts following it around.
Thomas is not reminded of the cat who used to hang out in the yard at Downton who he befriended - Smoke was a nice lass with a good job, not to mention dignity and poise. Soot is a completely unrelated name and any thematic similarity is a coincidence.

Short sweet barris edit! Fun fact, I joined a choir and sang this the night after I first saw the film and couldn't stop thinking about them so this has always been The Song About Them for me.

This is the post I was looking for when I found that other one. I still want this.
I would like to put in a room together:
Thomas Barrow, scheming ambitious and snide/mean/catty footman
Richard Ellis, scheming ambitious and sneakily snide/mean/catty royal footman
Quentin Sidebottom, depressed menswear salesman whose customer service persona bleeds into his whole life and sometimes feels like it is his whole life, who wishes he had goals and sparkle like the mean footmen (even if he finds them a little too mean).
Chris Webster, determined optimist who thinks People Should Be Nicer And More Honest and who perhaps gets very impatient with Richard and Thomas and they with him.
I think that would be fantastic chaos.

Most of this post is incomprehensible to me now but damn I cooked with that last addition. (I mean we’re going back in time a bit to before Tom gave up but apart from that.)
The way Thomas and Guy are both more open than they’re supposed to be and more concealed?? The way it’s different on each of them and the way it’s similar???
